Sweden is a country that can offer you an exhilarating experience depending on which part of the country you choose to visit. Visit Northern Sweden to take in the simply breathtaking Northern Lights and Midnight Sun while relaxing in some of the most unique accommodation you will find anywhere.

Or head to Southern Sweden to experience the windswept islands, rolling greenery, and yellow canola fields along with the most picturesque of landscapes and magnificent coastlines.

Maybe Middle Sweden is more your cup of tea? Middle Sweden has it all. From idyllic urban retreats where you can lose yourself in the beauty of nature. Or if you prefer a more lively trip, then the vibrant city life has everything you didn’t know you needed to experience a country that has it all for every traveler.

In the early COVID-19 pandemic, Sweden famously opted for the path that encouraged herd immunity and refused to impose lockdown measures. As such, the country saw high levels of infection and many deaths.

As cases soared in December 2020 and January 2021, lockdown measures were imposed. At this time, the country is still in the midst of a third wave, and to date, the country has the most deaths of any Scandinavian country. Despite a mandate for face masks to be worn on public transport, as much of the rest of the world, there is no requirement to wear face masks in public, nor are they worn in general.

Due to the current lockdown measures and the fact that the country is only just starting to experience slower growth in infection rates, all travel from outside the EU is banned. This is until May, 31st 2021, at the very earliest.

It seems unlikely that Sweden will see a great change in lockdown measures allowing international visitors; however, as of February 6th,2021, all visitors must provide a negative COVID-19 PCR or Antigen test result collected within 48 hours of entry for essential travel. According to the requirements, arriving travelers must also be tested as soon as possible after arrival and again five days later. Only those from EU countries will be permitted to enter should they meet these requirements.

The guidance for travelers from the US is not to visit until further notice. There is currently no timeline to indicate when this would be likely to change. With this in mind, the country is labeled as a Level Four, and US citizens are advised not to travel to Sweden.

As the situation evolves, it will become likely that Sweden will once more open its borders to those wishing to visit for tourism and leisure purposes.
