Traveling to Thailand – COVID-19 Updates

Thailand is located in the Indochinese Peninsula; it has a population of 66 million people and attracts millions more each year as tourists. The people of Thailand originated in southwest China and southeast Asia making Thailand their home interior in the 11th century. Early kingdoms developed in the region which modernised and centralised in the 18th and 19th century.

Tourism to Thailand began to grow from the 1960s onwards when the political situation started to stabilise. Bangkok is a central location for international travel helping the country’s tourist industry to boom in the late 20th and early 21 century. But that’s not the only reason, Thailand has some incredible natural beauty, culture and nightlife.

Covid 19 Summary

As with many countries in southeast Asia Thailand has effectively closed its borders to casual tourists entering and editing the country. The country is separated into two zones, the green zone and the yellow zone. The yellow zone covers a small area in the south where the advice is not to travel at all. Much of the rest of the country is green meaning advice is required to travel.

The authorities in Thailand advise against all but essential travel in much of the country, but especially around the Thailand-Malaysia border, the areas of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat. And the southern province of Songkhla. This includes both air travel and travel by train.

Travel Update

Thailand is also seeing an increase in Covid-19 cases and the emergence of the Indian strain of the virus. Like most of its neighboring countries Thailand has restrictions on international travel and rules governing new arrivals. If you want to travel to the country this summer you will need a visa and PCR test.

Certain classes of foreigners arriving in Thailand will be subject to a PCR test and might require quarantine for 14 days. This will largely depend on where they are traveling from. Quarantine is required in the country for a period of 14 days at a state quarantine facility. A PCR test should be carried out no more than 3 days before flying.

Arriving in Thailand

The Covid 19 situation is constantly changing so it’s important to find reliable up-to-date information before you travel. As it stands the authorities in Thailand advise not to travel to the country but if you do you will need a PCR test and 14 day period of quarantine.

If you decide to travel and enter the country you will also be subject to domestic rules and restrictions. These include wearing a face mask in public and following disease control measures when using public transport including planes, trains, buses, and taxis.
