Traveling to Egypt – COVID-19 Updates

Known for its influential pharaohs and magnificent ancient pyramids, Egypt links northeast Africa with the Middle East. In addition, the Egyptian capital Cairo hosts unforgettable Ottoman landmarks such as the Muhammad Ali Mosque and Egyptian museums.

COVID-19 Travel Restrictions And Test Requirements

To visit the culturally rich African country, travelers above seven need to produce proof of their health insurance and a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate from a reputable laboratory. These results should be written in English or Arabic and taken within 72 hours of the visitor’s departure.

However, travelers from farther places like Japan, China, North America, and South America need to provide their test certificates within a maximum of 96 hours before their departure due to the longer trips and transit periods at the airports. Kids below six years and transit passengers may be exempted from the negative COVID-19 test results requirements.

Egypt resumed international tourism activities in July last year. However, patronage of tourist sites like Luxor has been low. The Great Giza Pyramids reopened on July 1, after being shut down in March for deep cleaning.

Although Egypt is ready to welcome American travelers, the U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 notice warning Americans about the risks of COVID-19 infections. U.S. visitors to Egypt need to obtain a tourist visa on arrival or via online enrollment.

While there are no requirements for quarantine, visitors need to show a negative COVID-19 PCR test before they can tour Egypt. The American Embassy in Egypt says that most travelers above six years need to produce test results taken within 72 hours before their trip to Egypt.

Travelers who disobey mask requirements could be subject to fines or prosecution. In addition, restaurants are supposed to operate at 50% capacity, while festivals, mass gatherings, and large funerals have been canceled in Egypt.

Once a traveler leaves Egypt’s borders, their COVID-10 PCR test becomes invalid, and it can’t be re-used for a return trip to the country. Furthermore, passengers arriving from India, Brazil, and Latin America must take Coronavirus tests following their arrival.

Arriving travelers need to observe the Egypt COVID-19 travel restrictions before they can gain access to the country. Apart from the standard entry requirements, border security personnel may ask travelers to provide additional documents verifying that they are free from the virus. In addition, visitors will be subject to the necessary health security protocols at Egypt’s airports.
