Pool With a View: 24 Rooftop Pools, Ranked From Icon to Good

Some pools you swim in. Others you swim toward, chin on the edge, city or ocean falling away below the waterline. The second kind is rarer than brochures suggest, which is why an Instagram graphic from Highlife HQ (@highlife_hq), titled "The Highlife — Pool With A View — true outdoor rooftop pools," caught our attention. It sorts 24 hotels into four tiers, Icon, Excellent, Premium and Good, and it is strict about what qualifies.

The test is simple. A true outdoor rooftop pool is open-air, on the roof, with no retractable glass waiting to slide shut when the weather turns. An indoor pool with a picture window does not count. A pool on a high terrace partway up a tower is a closer call, and a few entries here are exactly that. We say so each time, because a guest booking for the summit deserves to know whether the building keeps climbing above the loungers.

The tiers are Highlife HQ's. The commentary and the access notes are ours, because a pool you cannot use is a photograph, not a perk. Where a hotel has published a number, we use it. Where it has not, we do not guess, and we leave day-pass prices to the hotels, since they change by the season.

Icon status signals the pools that define the category: the ones every other hotel measures itself against.

Marina Bay Sands — Singapore

The Sands SkyPark Infinity Pool is the picture most people have in mind when they hear "rooftop infinity pool." It runs 150 metres along Level 57, the platform capping the three hotel towers, with a 146-metre vanishing edge facing west over Marina Bay and the financial district. The hotel markets it as the world's largest rooftop infinity pool, and Singapore's climate keeps it open all year.

Entry is by room keycard at a turnstile: hotel guests only, no day passes, no bar workaround. Non-guests can buy a ticket to the Observation Deck on Level 56, but the pool is out of sight from most of it.

One&Only One Za'abeel — Dubai

The roof here belongs to The Link, the sky bridge joining the two towers above Sheikh Zayed Road. The infinity pool sits on top, reportedly around 100 metres up and 120 metres long, with Tapasake, the resort's Nikkei pool club, at its side and the Burj Khalifa in frame. The Link holds the Guinness World Records title for longest cantilevered building, a record for the structure, not the pool.

Nothing stands above the pool, but the towers keep rising beside it, so this is a bridge-top pool rather than a summit one. The resort's own page describes it as exclusive to staying guests, though pool-club day access has been reported, so ask before you count on either. Check rates with Biirdee

Address Beach Resort — Dubai

Level 77 is the top of this building, and the infinity pool sits on the roof of the sky bridge between the twin towers at 293.9 metres, a height Guinness World Records is widely reported to recognise as the highest outdoor infinity pool in a building. The building stops only a few metres above it, so this is a true summit. Ain Dubai stands on Bluewaters Island, Palm Jumeirah lies flat beyond, and JBR Beach fills the foreground. ZETA Seventy Seven, the pool club alongside, has sunken day beds and cabanas.

Pool access is tied to room category rather than granted with every rate, so have your advisor book the right one. ZETA sells a day pass to non-guests; the floating breakfast is for in-house guests only.

Atlantis The Royal — Dubai

Cloud 22 is a 90-metre infinity pool on the 22nd floor, which the hotel places 96 metres above the Palm, with a second swim-up-bar pool and a cocktail bar between the daybeds. The view runs across the Arabian Gulf, over Palm Jumeirah and out to the skyline. It is an open-air terrace rather than the building's summit: Cloud 22 sits on the sky bridge linking the two towers, which continue well above it.

Adults only, 21 and over. Non-guests have been able to buy day passes since late 2023; a pass covers a lounger and the pool, with food and drink extra.

Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro — Rio de Janeiro

Height is not the point in Ipanema. The rooftop pool tops an eight-storey beachfront building, with the sand eight floors below rather than fifty. Forbes Travel Guide describes a white-marble infinity edge; the view sweeps along Ipanema toward Arpoador, Morro Dois Irmãos and Corcovado. The hotel, widely described as Philippe Starck's first project in Brazil, pours caipirinhas at the rooftop bar and sets chairs and umbrellas on the public sands opposite.

Hotel guests only; none of the sources we have seen offers a day pass.

Excellent marks pools with a genuinely great view and a strong hotel behind them, even where the pool itself is small.

Park Hyatt Sydney — Sydney

The rooftop pool at the Park Hyatt is small enough that guests have long called it a plunge pool. Nobody minds, because the view is across Sydney Cove to the Opera House with the Harbour Bridge rising directly behind the hotel. The building is low-rise, so the water sits a few storeys above the harbour; that closeness is the charm. Guests have reported the pool as heated, and it adjoins The Spa.

Access rules are not published in a form we can quote, so ask your advisor to confirm. Biirdee's take: book for the address, then treat the pool as the best seat in the house.

SLS Dubai Hotel & Residences — Dubai

Privilege occupies the 75th and top floor with two infinity pools the hotel places 325 metres above ground. One faces the Burj Khalifa and Downtown across the canal and is adults-only; the other faces Meydan and, per the hotel's listing, admits younger teens with an adult. The hotel says Guinness World Records has recognised the world's highest overflow pool here; note that "overflow pool" is its own category, and Address Beach Resort's title reads differently.

The pool deck runs 9am to 6pm. From Friday to Sunday the rooftop becomes a nightclub, so a Tuesday swim is the calmer one. Non-guests can buy in through a day pass with a minimum spend; terms shift, so ask.

The Berkeley — London

When the Wilton Place building opened in 1972 it was the capital's only hotel with a rooftop pool, and for decades that pool was famous for a roof that slid open over a colonnaded deck. Press covering the recent relaunch reports the roof and colonnades are gone and the rooftop pool now sits open-air behind glass balustrades; the hotel's own copy says only "heated rooftop pool," so we would ask before packing for an open-air swim. Either way it is heated, open year-round, and looks over Knightsbridge and Belgravia toward Hyde Park.

The pool is for hotel guests by day. A seasonal evening rooftop bar has opened to the public since summer 2023.

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge — Brooklyn

On the tenth and top floor of a ten-storey building on Pier 1 of Brooklyn Bridge Park sits a small plunge pool beside Harriet's Rooftop & Lounge, a bar named for Harriet Tubman. The address does the work: Lower Manhattan fills the view, the Brooklyn Bridge is right there, and the Statue of Liberty stands across the harbor. The season is limited to the warm months.

The pool is understood to be for registered guests, while Harriet's welcomes the public.

The Joule — Dallas

The Joule's pool cantilevers eight feet past the edge of a 1927 Gothic bank building on the tenth floor, and the projecting end is closed with a clear acrylic window. It is not an infinity edge. Swimmers hang at the far end and look straight down onto Main Street, then up across downtown Dallas. ARCHITEXAS designed the pool, and there is a pool bar, five cabanas and daybeds to reserve. Whether any of the old bank rises above the deck is a question for the hotel, so call it a high terrace rather than a proven summit.

It runs seasonally, 8am to 8pm. Non-guests can buy day passes Sunday through Thursday via ResortPass; days and prices move, so check the live listing. Check rates with Biirdee

Nobu Hotel Barcelona — Barcelona

The Nobu Rooftop tops the former Torre Catalunya tower beside Sants station, reportedly on the 25th floor, and it is a plunge pool with sun beds rather than a swimming pool. The draw is the 360-degree panorama the hotel describes: the Sagrada Família, Montjuïc, the skyline and the Mediterranean at once. The hotel calls this the highest rooftop in Barcelona, its own claim rather than a measured record.

By day the pool is for hotel guests. In the evening the rooftop becomes a cocktail bar open to everyone, with sake and Nobu-style bites.

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok — Bangkok

Sixteen floors up the Magnolias Ratchadamri Boulevard tower, this open-air, temperature-controlled infinity pool looks over the green oval of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club racecourse toward the Ratchaprasong and Lumpini skyline. Private cabanas line the deck. It is an open-air terrace rather than the building's summit: the hotel's own venues sit on the 55th and 56th floors, so roughly 40 floors of tower rise above the water.

Premium signals a pool worth planning a stay around, with a caveat or two that keeps it out of the top tiers.

Hilton Pattaya — Pattaya

The infinity pool sits on the 16th floor of a 34-storey tower above the CentralFestival Pattaya Beach mall, and its edge is designed to merge with Pattaya Bay so the water appears to run into the sea. Cabanas and sun beds ring the deck, and the same floor holds pillow-lounges among reflection ponds where afternoon tea is served over the bay. It is an open-air terrace rather than the building's summit: the Horizon rooftop bar has the 34th floor.

Pool access is for hotel guests; the Horizon bar is open to the public.

Savoy Palace — Funchal

The Galáxia Skypool is an adults-only infinity pool on the top floor of this curved tower by RH+ Arquitectos, with interiors by Nini Andrade Silva. The edge runs out over Funchal, the bay and the Atlantic. The hotel says the water is heated to between 23 and 26 degrees, and the Galáxia Skybar shares the rooftop with cocktails, DJ sets and live jazz. The 80-metre pool quoted on booking sites is the ground-level main pool, not this one; a separate infinity pool and jet pool serve the Jacarandá club deck for club-category guests.

Aguas de Ibiza Grand Luxe Hotel — Santa Eulària des Riu

Highlife HQ places the rooftop pool at Aguas de Ibiza in the Premium tier, and it is an entry where we will not fill in details we have not settled with the hotel. Floor, dimensions, hours, heating and access are questions we put to the property before booking rather than facts we print. What we can say is that the hotel sits in Santa Eulària des Riu, and that the rooftop label is Highlife HQ's.

Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona — Barcelona

Terrat, Catalan for "flat roof," is the hedge-lined rooftop terrace of a former bank building on Passeig de Gràcia, with interiors by Patricia Urquiola. The pool is a small dipping pool rather than an infinity or lap pool; the hotel's larger swimming pool is indoors at the spa. The view takes in Passeig de Gràcia and Gaudí's Casa Batlló. The terrace runs from April to October.

Fairmont Quasar Istanbul — Istanbul

Marcel Wanders designed the Ukiyo Infinity Pool, and his golden globes rise out of the water, with Ukiyo Lounge & Bar alongside. The edge looks over the Istanbul skyline with the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara in the distance. The hotel calls it a fifth-floor rooftop, accurate as far as it goes. It is an open-air terrace rather than the building's summit: the pool sits on the low podium at the foot of two high-rise towers. It runs in summer only, 10am to 6pm on fair days.

Hotel guests swim as standard, and day passes for non-guests have been reported; confirm the season with the hotel before you plan around it.

Grand Hotel Central — Barcelona

Highlife HQ lists the rooftop pool at Grand Hotel Central in the Premium tier as an open-air infinity pool with a bar on the same terrace, which we have not yet confirmed with the hotel. Reports place the view over the Gothic Quarter's roofscape with the cathedral in the picture. Dimensions, season and any age rules are details we settle with the hotel directly rather than print here.

Access is reported as hotel guests only for the pool, with the bar open to the public in season.

Good

Good signals a rooftop pool that earns its place through setting and character, often on a low building where the roof is only a few storeys up.

The Silo Hotel — Cape Town

The Silo Rooftop crowns a converted 1920s grain elevator that Thomas Heatherwick reworked with 104 convex "pillow" windows. The hotel calls it the tallest building in the V&A Waterfront, and the roof delivers a full circle: Table Mountain, Signal Hill, the Atlantic and the harbour. The pool is reported as heated and glass-sided. The rooftop bar runs from 11:00 until sunset, weather permitting, with oysters and raw-bar snacks from midday.

The rooftop is primarily for hotel guests, with the public admitted by prior reservation only. Check rates with Biirdee

Memmo Alfama — Lisbon

The Memmo Alfama Terrace is not on top of the building. It is a first-floor terrace that reads as a rooftop because the hotel sits high on the Alfama hillside, so the pool floats above the neighbourhood's roofs anyway. The plunge pool is finished in deep brick red to echo the terracotta tiles below against the blue Tagus, with an infinity edge. The white-marble terrace doubles as a wine bar.

The pool is for hotel guests only; the terrace and wine bar are open to the public. Biirdee's take: a dip, a glass, then stay for the light.

art'otel London Battersea Power Station — London

The rooftop pool at art'otel is an open-air pool on the upper terrace beside JOIA, the restaurant and rooftop bar of Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, in a Foster + Partners building on Electric Boulevard. The hotel markets it as heated and open year-round, which in London means swimming under a grey sky with the four chimneys of Battersea Power Station filling the view and the Thames beyond. Whether the terrace is the literal top of the building is for the hotel to confirm, so call it a rooftop-level pool.

The pool is understood to be for hotel guests, while JOIA is open to the public.

Grand Hotel Minerva — Florence

The Rooftop at Grand Hotel Minerva sits on the roof of a low palazzo the hotel traces to the 13th century, with Piazza Santa Maria Novella directly below and a 360-degree view over central Florence to Brunelleschi's dome. The water is heated to 28 degrees, and the pool runs from roughly April to October. From 7:30pm the rooftop becomes a cocktail bar with a signature Terrace Negroni.

The pool is exclusive to hotel guests. The evening bar welcomes non-guests. Biirdee's take: swim at opening, then the aperitivo.

South Beach Camps Bay — Cape Town

A 21-suite boutique hotel with a Miami-inspired look, about 50 metres back from Camps Bay beach, with a rooftop infinity pool that faces west over the Atlantic for sunset. Camps Bay lies beneath Lion's Head and the Twelve Apostles, so the view has mountain behind and ocean ahead. The only detailed description calls the pool "glass-enclosed," which in Camps Bay's wind most plausibly means glass screens rather than a roof, but we cannot promise it is entirely open to the sky. There is a second heated pool with a sundeck and bar.

Pools and bars are reported as exclusive to in-house guests; we found no day-pass offer.

Grand Ferdinand — Vienna

The Rooftop Pool at Grand Ferdinand sits on the terrace of Grand Étage, the eighth-floor rooftop restaurant where breakfast is served, in a listed heritage building on Schubertring. Guest feedback calls the pool very small, so think of it as a dip with a view rather than laps. The view runs over the Ringstrasse and the inner-city roofs, and the pool has its own bar.

The rooftop pool and bar are reserved for hotel guests; we found no day-pass offer.
