Cruises from Venice

Venice Cruise Terminals (Marghera & Ravenna) — the arrival, the transfers and the sailing on one itinerary

Venice remains the destination; the embarkation pier has moved — to Marghera on the lagoon's edge, or Ravenna down the coast.

The rules changed in Venice: large cruise ships no longer sail through the historic basin, so itineraries sold as Venice now board at Marghera, on the mainland edge of the lagoon, or at Ravenna, a separate coastal city well to the south. Which pier you have determines the entire pre-cruise plan. The destination is unchanged — the logistics are not.

VCE serves both scenarios. Marghera is a twenty-to-thirty-minute mainland drive from the airport; Ravenna is a genuine transfer of a couple of hours or more, usually arranged through the cruise line or privately. Either way, the Venice nights themselves belong in the historic city beforehand — water taxi in, water taxi out, then the road leg to the ship.

Misreading the boarding port is the modern Venice cruise error, which is why Biirdee confirms the pier from the cruise documents before a single hotel or flight is placed. From there the pattern is set: VCE arrival, nights on the canals, and a planned water-and-road chain to Marghera or Ravenna with the timing already solved.

Venice Cruise Logistics

VCE to the Piers

For Marghera embarkations the airport run is a short mainland drive of twenty to thirty minutes. For Ravenna, treat the transfer as a half-day: a couple of hours or more by road, best pre-booked rather than improvised on sailing day.

Where to Stay Pre-Cruise

Stay in historic Venice regardless of pier — Cannaregio, San Marco or Dorsoduro — and give it two nights. The mainland hotel districts save little and miss the point of starting here.

Embarkation Day Rhythm

From a canal-side hotel, the day sequences water and road: a boat to the transfer point, then the drive to Marghera or the longer run to Ravenna. Ships board from late morning; Ravenna passengers should leave Venice earlier than feels necessary.

Return and Fly-Out

Disembarking at Marghera puts VCE half an hour away, so late-morning flights work. From Ravenna, allow the full transfer back north — afternoon departures only — or end the trip with extra Venice nights instead.

Venice Cruise Port: FAQs

Where do cruise ships actually leave from in Venice now?

Large ships board at Marghera, on the industrial mainland edge of the lagoon, or at Ravenna, a separate city about two hours down the coast — not from the historic basin. Your cruise documents name the pier; verify it before booking hotels or flights.

How far is Venice airport from the cruise terminal?

To Marghera, about twenty to thirty minutes by road. To Ravenna, plan on a transfer of two hours or more, which is why Ravenna sailings usually come with organized coach or car arrangements.

Should I stay in Venice or near the port before my cruise?

In Venice proper — the historic city is the reason you chose this itinerary, and every pier option is reachable from it with a planned morning. Two nights before sailing is the comfortable standard.

Why do ships no longer sail past St. Mark's Square?

Italy restricted large cruise ships from the Giudecca Canal and the historic basin to protect the lagoon, moving embarkation to mainland and coastal piers. The skyline sail-by is gone for big ships; the city itself remains fully accessible before and after the cruise.

How early should I leave Venice for a Ravenna embarkation?

Morning, not midday: with a water leg to reach your car or coach and then a couple of hours of road, an early start protects the boarding window. Pre-booked transfers with luggage handling remove most of the friction.
