A river cruise is the most civilised way to see Europe: unpack once, wake up in a new town, walk off the ship into the old centre. The one thing that can spoil it is arriving at the first port after an overnight economy flight and a three-hour transfer, exhausted before the welcome dinner.

The Rhine and the Danube carry most of the traffic: Amsterdam to Basel through the castle-lined Middle Rhine, and Budapest, Vienna and Passau along the Danube. The Rhône and Seine cover Provence and Normandy from Lyon and Paris; the Douro is Portugal’s gentle, wine-terraced week from Porto; the Elbe and Main link Prague and Berlin to the bigger rivers. Outside Europe, the Nile between Luxor and Aswan is the great classical itinerary, and the Mekong between Vietnam and Cambodia the most exotic.
April to June and September to October are the sweet spots in Europe: mild weather, long days, and water levels that are usually reliable. July and August are hot and busy. Late November and December are the Christmas-market sailings, which sell out early. Low water in late summer and high water in spring can force a line to bus a segment; the better lines have sister ships positioned to swap, and we will tell you which itineraries are exposed.

River cruises are short, seven to fourteen nights, and the flights to Europe are a large share of the total cost. The lines know this and bundle air at attractive-looking prices, usually economy with restrictive routings. Our desk started as a business class specialist; we price the lie-flat fare for the same dates, often well below the line’s business-class upgrade, and set out both options plainly. Arriving rested is the difference between enjoying Vienna on day one and sleeping through it.
