Cruise Line Air vs Booking Your Own Business Class: What the ‘Free Flights’ Really Cost

Included air is one of the cruise industry’s best marketing ideas. Whether it is a good deal for you is a route-by-route question, and here is how to answer it.

A luxury cruise brochure that says “flights included” is telling the truth and leaving out most of it. The flight is included; the cabin is economy; the airline and the routing are the line’s choice; you will usually land on the morning the ship sails; and the business-class upgrade on offer is priced from the airline’s published fare. None of that makes cruise-line air a bad product. It makes it a product you should price rather than accept.

Biirdee is a business-class flight desk that also books cruises, so this is the comparison we run every week. The short version: on short domestic routes the line’s air is often fine and sometimes genuinely free. On long-haul routes to Europe, Asia, South America and Australia, taking the air credit and booking business class at unpublished fares almost always wins, and by a wide margin.

The Three Models of Cruise-Line Air

  • Included air. The cruise fare bundles an economy flight from a set of gateway cities, with business class offered as an upgrade. Regent Seven Seas is the clearest example; some Regent suites include business class outright. If you decline the air you usually receive a credit smaller than what the flight would cost you.
  • Air credits. The line prices the cruise with air and lets you take a credit — often several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars per person, varying by sailing — if you book your own. Silversea works this way, as do several premium lines on promotions. The credit is real money off the fare.
  • Air packages. The line quotes flights separately from the cruise through its air department, sometimes at a contract rate, sometimes not. Most premium and mainstream lines work this way, and so do the hotel-style luxury lines such as Explora and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

Deviation Fees and the Default Routing

In all three models the line’s air department picks the airline, routing and dates. If you want anything else — to arrive a day early, to fly a specific carrier, to stop in Paris on the way home — you pay a deviation fee, typically $75 to $175 per person, and often a fare difference on top. The default routing is designed around the ship’s schedule, not your comfort: a connection through a hub, an overnight in economy, and a transfer straight to the pier.

The one thing cruise-line air does well is protection. If the line booked your flight and it is delayed, the line knows, and it will do its best to get you to the ship or the next port. That is worth something. It is not worth an overnight economy flight to Barcelona when a lie-flat seat for the same dates costs less than the line’s upgrade.

What Booking Your Own Business Class Costs

Airlines sell business and first class through two channels: the published fares on their websites, and unpublished fares distributed through consolidators and agencies that commit volume. The seats are identical; the price is not. Biirdee holds those contracts on the major long-haul carriers and books premium cabins typically 30 to 70 percent below the published fare, which is the number the cruise line uses to price its upgrade. Our guide to unpublished business class fares explains the mechanism.

The arithmetic for a Mediterranean sailing from the US West Coast usually looks like this: take the air credit, put it against two business-class tickets booked at an unpublished fare, add a night in Barcelona and a car to the pier, and the total is often below the line’s own business-class upgrade — with the airline and routing you chose, and a full day to recover before the ship sails.

When to Keep the Line’s Air

It is not always wrong. Keep the cruise line’s flights when:

  • The route is short and domestic — Dallas to Fort Lauderdale, say — and the included economy seat is effectively free.
  • The line’s business-class package on your route is genuinely at or below what an agency can book, which happens on a few heavily contracted gateway routes; we will tell you when it does.
  • You are on a fly-cruise expedition where the line’s charter flight is the only way to reach the ship, as with Punta Arenas to King George Island for Antarctica.
  • You value the line’s missed-ship protection above cabin, routing and timing, and are not buying trip insurance.

In every other case, price both. It takes one message and the difference is usually not close.

The Rule That Beats Every Other

Arrive a day early. Ships do not wait, and a same-day arrival after a long-haul flight through a winter hub is a gamble with the whole holiday as the stake. One night in the embarkation city turns a missed connection into a lost dinner, and Miami, Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Vancouver and Singapore are all worth a day. Biirdee builds the pre-cruise night and a private transfer to the pier into every cruise itinerary, at hotels booked at the direct rate with partner perks. It is the least glamorous advice in cruising and the most valuable.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is cruise-line air cheaper than booking my own flights? In economy on short routes, often yes. In business class on long-haul routes, almost never: the line’s upgrade is priced from the published fare while an agency like Biirdee books the same cabin at unpublished rates.
  • What is a cruise air deviation fee? A charge of roughly $75 to $175 per person to change the line’s default flight plan: an early arrival, a particular airline, or a different return city. Booking your own flights removes the fee and the restrictions with it.
  • Should I take the air credit? On long-haul routes, usually. The credit reduces the fare and business class booked independently costs less than the line’s upgrade. On short domestic routes where the included air is effectively free, keeping it can be right.
  • What happens if I miss the ship on my own flights? Trip insurance covers the cost of catching up with the ship, and a concierge rebooks you in real time. Arriving a day early means the question almost never arises.
