When to Book a Cruise: Wave Season, Deposits, Price Drops and Perks Explained

Cruise fares move in a pattern. Knowing it is the difference between paying the opening price with the best cabin and paying more for what is left.

Airlines price seats with algorithms that respond to demand by the hour. Cruise lines price cabins with a calendar. Fares open high or low depending on the line’s philosophy, move in a handful of predictable steps, and end with either a sell-out or a fire sale. Because the pattern is predictable, the question “when should I book a cruise?” has a real answer, and it is not the same for a Regent suite in the Mediterranean and an inside cabin to Cozumel.

Wave Season

Wave season is the industry’s name for January through March, when lines run their most aggressive promotions of the year: reduced deposits, onboard credit, included drinks or Wi-Fi packages, free or upgraded air on the luxury lines, and occasionally genuine fare reductions. It exists because that is when people book summer and the following winter. The offers are real but the fine print is thick: “free” packages are often worth less than their face value, and the best promotions attach to specific sailings rather than whole seasons. It is a good time to book. It is a better time to have someone read the terms.

How Fares Move Over a Sailing’s Life

  • Launch, 18 to 24 months out. Luxury, river and expedition lines usually open with their best fares and the full choice of cabins; early-booking savings of 10 to 25 percent are common. The best suites, connecting cabins and aft verandas go here. If you know what you want, this is the moment.
  • The long middle. Fares drift up as the sailing fills, punctuated by promotions during wave season and around the line’s own sales. Mainstream lines are more volatile here than luxury lines.
  • Final payment, 90 to 120 days out. The point after which cancellation costs real money. Lines look at what is unsold and decide whether to discount. A luxury sailing that is nearly full does nothing; a mainstream sailing with 300 empty cabins gets cheaper.
  • Last minute. Inside and ocean-view cabins on big ships can be genuinely cheap in the final weeks. Suites, small luxury ships, Antarctica and school-holiday sailings almost never are, because they sold out months ago. Last-minute also means last-minute flights at published fares, which usually eats the saving.

Deposits, Cancellation and Price Drops

Deposits are typically 10 to 25 percent of the fare, sometimes reduced to a flat amount during promotions, and are refundable until final payment on most bookings — check for “non-refundable deposit” fares, which are cheaper for a reason. Final payment is usually due 90 to 120 days before sailing on ocean lines and earlier on some luxury and expedition products. After that the cancellation schedule ramps to 100 percent in the last weeks, which is what trip insurance is for.

If the fare drops after you book and before final payment, most lines will re-fare you to the lower price or add the difference as onboard credit, if asked. They do not volunteer it, and the rules vary by line and by promotion. An agency that watches its clients’ bookings catches these; a direct booking relies on you noticing. Biirdee monitors price movements on every cruise it books and asks the line to honour them where policy allows.

What an Agency Adds on Top

The cruise fare is the same whether you book with the line or with an agency; lines protect their published pricing and pay agencies a commission out of it. What an agency adds is around the fare: onboard credit or amenities from its own partnerships, sometimes on top of the line’s promotion; the cabin knowledge to avoid the noisy deck; the price-drop monitoring above; and, in Biirdee’s case, the flights — business class at unpublished fares, priced against the line’s air, and a night before the ship sails. The whole-trip view is described on our cruises page.

So When Should You Book?

  • Luxury, river, expedition, or a specific cabin. At launch, or as early as you can. Availability, not price, is the constraint, and the launch fare is usually the best one anyway.
  • A peak-season or school-holiday sailing. Nine to twelve months out at the latest for connecting cabins and suite enclaves.
  • A flexible mainstream cruise, any cabin. During wave season for the perks, or after final payment for the discount, with flights booked separately at unpublished fares rather than published ones.
  • Anything long-haul. Early enough that the flights can be booked well too: the best unpublished business-class fares are not last-minute products either.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is cruise wave season? January to March, when cruise lines run their biggest annual promotions: reduced deposits, onboard credit, included packages and, on luxury lines, air offers. Good time to book; better time to have the terms read.
  • Do cruise prices go down closer to the date? On mainstream ships with unsold inside and ocean-view cabins, often. On luxury ships, suites, expedition sailings and holiday dates, rarely, because they sell out. Last-minute flights usually cost more than the cruise saving.
  • Can I get a refund if the cruise price drops? Before final payment, most lines will re-fare or credit the difference if asked. After final payment, some offer onboard credit or an upgrade at their discretion. An agency that watches the booking is the reliable way to catch it.
  • Is it cheaper to book a cruise through an agency? The fare is the same. An agency adds perks from its partnerships, price-drop monitoring and cabin advice, and Biirdee adds business-class flights at unpublished fares. It never costs more.
