Air Canada Aeroplan Flight Reward Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel a Ticket Booked With Points

The Short Answer

As of September 2026, cancelling an Aeroplan flight reward costs CA$150 per ticket on aircanada.com, or CA$175 through the Aeroplan Contact Centre, when the reward was booked in Economy Standard or the "Lowest" fare option of Premium Economy, Business or First. An Economy Flex reward costs CA$75 online or CA$125 by phone to cancel, and Economy Latitude and the "Flexible" premium fare options cancel free. Changes follow the same logic: CA$75 online or CA$100 by phone, per direction and per ticket, on Standard and Lowest fares, and no fee on Flex, Latitude and Flexible. Only Super Elite members have the fees waived, and only on rewards redeemed from their own account.

The deadline is two hours before departure. Air Canada's Flight Reward Policy allows changes and cancellations "at any time up to 2 hours prior to departure" and is blunt about what happens otherwise: a member who cannot travel and does not cancel at least two hours before departure has the ticket forfeited, and a forfeited reward is "no longer valid for travel or Points reinstatement". Cancel in time and all of the points come back, along with the taxes, fees and surcharges on the unused value of the trip.

A separate rule softens the first day: you can cancel a flight reward at no charge within 24 hours of making the booking. Fees are charged in Canadian dollars and may be subject to applicable taxes; when a reward mixes fare options, the most restrictive cancellation fee applies.

How to Cancel an Aeroplan Flight Reward

Step 1: sign in to aircanada.com and open the reward in Manage My Booking (Air Canada's redemption page says simply: "You can cancel your Aeroplan flight reward by visiting Manage My Booking"). Step 2: cancel the booking; the fee for your fare option is applied online at the lower aircanada.com rate. Step 3: the points return to the account that paid, or to each family member's account when a Family Sharing pool paid for the reward, and the taxes, fees and surcharges on the unused value are refunded to the original form of payment, except for taxes that are non-refundable by law. Air Canada commits to refunding eligible tickets within 30 calendar days, and within seven business days for card purchases on flights to and from the US; it publishes no timeline for the points themselves.

Cancelling through the Aeroplan Contact Centre (1-800-361-5373 in Canada and the US) costs CA$25 more per ticket, so the phone is for what the site cannot do: passenger information cannot be changed online, and if the cancel and refund options are missing from your booking Air Canada asks you to contact it directly. The 24-hour rule is best invoked online too, but Air Canada's general customer service plan says to contact it within 24 hours of purchase if you need help.

The two-hour deadline is the whole game. Cancel at 2 hours and 1 minute before departure and the points and taxes come back for the fare option's fee; cancel at 1 hour and 59 minutes, or not at all, and the ticket is forfeited with nothing reinstated. Air Creebec and Calm Air segments have a 48-hour cut-off instead. Because a partly flown reward refunds only the taxes on the unused value, and Air Canada publishes no formula for refunding points on a partly used ticket, treat the return leg of a round-trip reward as something to change rather than cancel once the outbound has flown.

How to Change an Aeroplan Flight Reward

Air Canada's redemption page still says "for changes, please call the Aeroplan Contact Centre", but since August 2023 most flight rewards can be changed online: sign in, retrieve the booking and look for the "Change flight" button, which lets you shop for alternative flights and change dates, cities, airlines and cabin. The fee table prices online changes at CA$75 per direction, per ticket on Standard and Lowest fares (CA$100 by phone) and nothing on Flex, Latitude and Flexible; the difference in points is charged when the new itinerary costs more, and the same points-and-cash ratio as the original booking must be kept, with taxes, fees and charges paid wholly in cash.

Changes are allowed up to two hours before departure, including after travel has started, subject to availability. Air Canada's 2022 flexibility announcement said a cheaper new itinerary earns a partial points refund, but the current policy states only that changes "may require use of additional Points", so do not assume a refund of the difference; a cancel-and-rebook is the certain way to capture a lower price, and it is only worth it when the saving exceeds the cancellation fee. Since 1 June 2026 rewards booked or reissued are priced under Air Canada's revised reward chart, so a change to an older booking may reprice at the new levels.

Same-day changes at the airport have their own table: CA$100 on Economy Standard, Economy Flex and Premium Economy Lowest, and no fee on Latitude, Premium Economy Flexible, Business and First. A Priority Rewards voucher applied to a changed reward is re-applied where it still qualifies and otherwise refunded to your account with its original expiry, provided travel has not started and the voucher has not expired.

Partner Rewards, Points + Cash, Vouchers and Special Cases

Rewards on Star Alliance and other partner airlines use the same fee table but add the CA$39 partner booking fee per ticket, which can be paid with points at booking. The fee is not among the items Air Canada lists as refundable or non-refundable on cancellation, so budget for losing it; the CA$30 phone booking fee is explicitly non-refundable. Partner rewards are also subject to partner restrictions, and reservations may include a US Tax Recovery Fee. Air Canada itself adds no carrier surcharge to rewards on its own flights, which is why an Aeroplan reward's refundable cash component is usually small.

Points + Cash rewards keep their ratio through any change: a reward paid half in points and half in cash must be changed on the same split, and the taxes, fees and charges always stay in cash. Air Canada quotes and charges the cash portion in Canadian dollars. Flight Reward Certificates and Priority Rewards vouchers follow the reward's fare rules for fees and are refunded to your account only if the voucher is unexpired and travel has not commenced; a partly flown reward booked with a certificate consumes the certificate entirely.

Two more rules from the policy shape the cancel-or-change decision. Name changes are not permitted once a flight reward ticket is issued, so a booking in the wrong name is a cancellation, and stopovers, which cost 5,000 points per direction and can last up to 45 days, are priced back into any change. Aeroplan points normally expire after 18 months of inactivity, but Air Canada has paused expiry until 30 November 2026, after which the normal policy resumes; points refunded to a dormant account count as activity only if the refund is treated as a transaction, so a small earning activity afterwards is the safe course.

Taxes, Fees and Refund Timing

Aeroplan collects taxes, fees and third-party charges in cash at booking, or lets you cover them with points, and refunds them on cancellation on any unused value of travel, except for taxes and fees that are non-refundable by law. The redemption page promises "a refund of all of your points back into your account, along with any associated taxes, fees and surcharges on the unused value of your travel". Refunds go to the original form of payment; card refunds are issued to the card used.

Air Canada's general refund commitment is 30 calendar days from the date it is required to process the refund, and, for flights to and from the US, seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other forms of payment. No timeline is published for re-crediting the points, and whether the change or cancellation fee itself can be paid in points is not stated: the policy quotes every fee in Canadian dollars.

Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rule

Air Canada's 24-hour rule is unusually generous in its wording: you may cancel a ticket purchase up to 24 hours after purchase for a full refund without penalty, on refundable and non-refundable fares alike, and the Aeroplan redemption page repeats it for rewards with no conditions attached. That makes Aeroplan a safe program in which to lock a seat while a plan firms up, provided you cancel inside the first day.

After that, the only deadline is two hours before departure, and it applies to changes as well as cancellations. Missing it forfeits the ticket outright; there is no no-show fee to pay because there is nothing left to redeposit. The deadline is the same in every channel, so a late-evening decision to cancel a morning flight should be made online rather than left for the Contact Centre's opening hours.

When Air Canada cancels or significantly changes the flight, the fee table does not apply: Canadian Air Passenger Protection Regulations and, for US itineraries, the US Department of Transportation refund rule entitle you to a full refund to the original form of payment, points included, if you choose not to travel, and Air Canada will otherwise rebook you.
