United MileagePlus Award Ticket Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel a Flight Booked With Miles
United redeposits award miles free and charges no award change fee, with one $125 exception for the traveler who never shows up: the rules, the how-to and the partner and phone fine print, straight from united.com.
By Biirdee Travel, Luxury Travel Concierge · Updated September 18, 2026

The Short Answer
As of September 2026, United charges no fee to cancel a MileagePlus award ticket before departure and redeposit the miles, and no change fee to move an award to different dates, routing or cabin; its own FAQ answers the redeposit question with "No, all fees were removed for canceling and changing award flights." A change that prices higher costs the difference in miles, and every fee is per ticket, so a family of four is four tickets. The one published exception is the no-show: if you do not show up for the flight, United charges a $125 service fee to redeposit the award miles, and its award rules add that this fee applies to all members.
Two further points decide what you get back. Only a wholly unused or cancelled award can be redeposited, so if you fly the outbound of a round-trip award and skip the return, the unused portion is forfeited rather than refunded; and the miles go back only to the account they came from, in five to seven business days. The taxes, fees and surcharges you paid in cash are refundable to the original form of payment, within seven business days for card payments, while booking and service fees are refunded only when you cancel within 24 hours of buying.
Booking an award online or in the app is free, but booking by phone costs $25 in the US and Canada, waived for Premier Platinum and 1K; United adds that fees vary outside the US and Canada and by status level, without publishing a table. This page sets out the fee position, the how-to, the Basic Economy, Money + Miles and partner cases, and the pages on united.com that state each rule. For the program itself see our United MileagePlus guide; for every major program side by side see award ticket cancellation fees compared.
Key Takeaways
- Cancel before departure: no fee, the miles redeposited to the account that paid within five to seven business days, and the taxes refunded to the original form of payment.
- No-show: a $125 service fee per ticket to redeposit the miles, applied to all members; cancel online before departure and it never arises.
- Change an award: no change fee, but the difference in miles is charged when the new itinerary prices higher, and an economy award can be moved to a higher cabin for the mileage difference.
- Only wholly unused awards are redeposited; the unflown return of a round-trip award is forfeited, so change it rather than abandon it.
- Booking by phone costs $25 in the US and Canada (free for Premier Platinum and 1K), and booking and service fees are refunded only within 24 hours of purchase; United publishes no separate fee table for non-US bookings or Premier tiers.
United Award Change and Cancellation Rules at a Glance
Every row is United's own rule as published on united.com in September 2026. Fees apply per ticket, to United, United Express, Star Alliance and other partner awards alike, and United says they vary outside the US and Canada and by MileagePlus status without publishing the variations.
| Situation | What it costs | The rule, as United states it |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel an award before departure | No fee; miles redeposited in five to seven business days; taxes refunded | "If you cancel your flight, you can ask to have your award miles put back into your account with no fee" |
| Change the date, routing or cabin of an award | No change fee; mileage difference charged when the new itinerary prices higher | "Economy awards may be exchanged for a higher cabin, if available, for the difference in mileage" |
| No-show, then request a redeposit | $125 service fee per ticket; non-refundable; applies to all members | "If you do not show up for your flight, there is a $125 service fee for redepositing your award miles" |
| Partially flown award | Unused portion forfeited; no redeposit | "If you redeem a roundtrip award and only travel one-way, the unused portion of the award will be forfeited" |
| Cancel within 24 hours of booking and ticketing | Full refund, no fees, if the ticket was bought at least one week before departure and every flight for every passenger is cancelled | "This includes canceling your reservation and requesting a full refund of the ticket price" |
| Basic Economy booked with Money + Miles | Can be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours but not changed; after 24 hours a future flight credit for the cash and no refund of the miles | "If you have a Basic Economy ticket or booked your flight using Money + Miles, you can't make changes but you can cancel for a full refund" |
| Money + Miles award (any cabin) after 24 hours | Non-refundable; a future flight credit may be issued for the cash, the miles are not refunded | "If you cancel after 24 hours, you may get a future flight credit, but the miles won't be refunded" |
| Same-day change on an award | Free for Premier members within the same fare class; other travelers may pay a price difference, up to $75 per traveler by status | New flight between the same airports, within 24 hours before or after the original, operated by United or United Express |
| Award on a Star Alliance or other partner airline | Same fee rules; the partner's taxes, contract of carriage and re-accommodation policies apply; some partners bookable only by phone, with the phone fee | "Fees apply to United, United Express, Star Alliance airline partners and other airline partners" |
| Award booked, changed or cancelled by phone | $25 service fee in the US and Canada, waived for Premier Platinum and 1K; $50 at the airport; refundable only within 24 hours of purchase | "Booking by phone has a $25 service fee in the U.S. and Canada. Premier Platinum and Premier 1K members do not have to pay this fee" |
How to Cancel a United Award Ticket
Step 1: sign in to united.com or the United app and open My Trips. Step 2: select "Cancel flight", then "Confirm cancellation"; United then presents the options for a travel credit or a refund, and for an award the miles are returned to the account they were withdrawn from. Step 3: the miles land in five to seven business days, and the taxes and fees are refunded to the original form of payment, within seven business days for a credit card. To cancel the trip of one traveler on a multi-passenger award, divide the reservation first using the individual cancel option in the travelers section, then cancel the new reservation.
If a trip was cancelled earlier and the miles have not been credited back, contact the MileagePlus Service Center (800-421-4655, daily from 7 a.m. to midnight, or text MILES to 32050) rather than reservations. Cash refunds of taxes on cancelled awards that do not come back automatically go through United's refund request form; United's award rules direct requests for tax refunds to refund accounting. Awards on certain partner carriers can only be booked and managed over the phone, and the phone service fee applies to those bookings even when united.com could not have handled them.
The deadline is departure. Before it, redeposit is free; after a no-show, redeposit costs $125 per ticket and United publishes no waiver for Premier members. The rule is worth a calendar alert on the day of travel: cancelling online an hour before departure keeps the whole balance, while forgetting costs $125 per person and still requires a call.
How to Change a United Award Ticket
Changes run through the same My Trips flow: select "Change flight", then "Edit" to update the flight, and choose the new one; the difference in miles, if any, is shown before you confirm, and united.com answers "Can I change my flight even if I booked with miles?" with a plain yes. Phone changes may carry the agent fee. Because United prices awards on its own flights dynamically, a change is really a repricing: a cheaper new flight returns the difference, a dearer one charges it, and an economy award can be exchanged for a higher cabin for the mileage difference when a seat is available.
Two 2025 and 2026 changes affect what a changed award can contain. The Excursionist Perk, the free one-way inside a multi-region award, stopped being offered on award tickets from 21 August 2025, and United says this applies to any changes made to existing bookings, so touching an older award that carried one will reprice it without the perk. On the upside, from 1 February 2026 PlusPoints and Complimentary Premier Upgrades can be applied to award tickets, so a downgrade-and-upgrade strategy is now available to Premier members.
Same-day changes follow the Same-Day Change policy: the new flight must be between the same airports, within 24 hours before or after the original, and operated by United or United Express. Premier members can confirm a same-day change free within the same fare class; other travelers may pay a price difference even when the same cabin is available, with United's optional service charges page putting the fee at up to $75 per traveler depending on status. Free standby is available from "View flight options" in My Trips, and itineraries with three or more flights need a call or an airport agent.
Basic Economy, Money + Miles, Partner and Special Cases
United publishes no Basic Economy rule specific to awards paid entirely in miles; its award pages state the blanket no-fee cancellation and redeposit rule with no fare-class carve-out, while its Basic Economy terms make cash tickets non-changeable and non-refundable outside the 24-hour window. Where the two clearly meet is Money + Miles, which United offers on every cabin including Basic Economy on select flights: a Money + Miles ticket can be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours of booking, cannot be changed in that window, and after 24 hours is non-refundable, with a future flight credit possible for the cash but no refund of the miles. Treat any Money + Miles booking as a cash ticket with the fare's rules.
Partner awards on Star Alliance and other carriers carry the same fees, but the award is subject to the operating carrier's taxes, tariff, contract of carriage and re-accommodation policies, some partners keep blackout dates that United and Copa do not, and some can only be booked over the phone, where the booking fee applies regardless. United charges no carrier-imposed surcharge on any award, which keeps the refundable cash component small and makes its partner awards among the cheapest to walk away from.
Three administrative rules round out the picture. Award tickets are valid for one year from issue and travel must begin within that year; the name on an issued award cannot be changed, so a booking for the wrong person is a redeposit and a new award; and MileagePlus miles never expire, so a redeposited balance carries no expiry problem. If you choose to fly a lower cabin than the award you booked, United makes no mileage adjustment.
Taxes, Fees and Refund Timing
United's award rules say travel awards have no cash value except for applicable taxes, fees and surcharges, which the member pays by credit card when the award is ticketed (some international departure fees are collected in cash at the airport). On a cancelled award those amounts are refundable: United's refund policy credits the original form of payment, within seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 business days for other forms, and directs refund requests for award taxes to refund accounting through the refund form. Refunds for partially used tickets are calculated on the segments flown.
Booking and service fees behave differently: United refunds them only when the trip is cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, so the $25 phone booking fee on an award cancelled a month later is gone, and the $125 no-show redeposit fee is itself non-refundable. The miles come back in five to seven business days, and only to the account they were taken from, even when the award was issued in someone else's name.
Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rule
United's 24-hour flexible booking policy covers tickets booked on united.com, at City Ticket Offices, at airport counters or through the Customer Contact Center: if you bought the ticket at least one week before departure, you can cancel within 24 hours of booking and ticketing for a full refund with no fees, provided you cancel every flight for every passenger on the reservation. Basic Economy and Money + Miles bookings can be refunded but not changed in that window, tickets bought with e-certificates are excluded, and FareLock fees are not refunded. The policy pages do not mention award tickets by name, but nothing excludes them, and the refund of booking fees within 24 hours is written with awards in mind.
After the first day, the only deadline is departure, and the cost of missing it is the $125 no-show redeposit fee per ticket. United states no cut-off before departure, so a cancellation minutes before boarding still qualifies for the free redeposit. Once any segment is flown the award is no longer wholly unused and cannot be redeposited at all.
If United or a partner cancels or significantly changes the flight, select "Rebooking options" or "View other flights" in the app or on the site to rebook, or "Cancel and refund your trip" in one step; under the US Department of Transportation's refund rule you are owed a refund to the original form of payment, miles included, when you choose not to travel. Our award cancellation fees guide covers those involuntary-change rules across every program.
How Biirdee Makes United Award Changes Seamless
When Biirdee books a United award with your MileagePlus miles, the exit rules are part of the booking: we tell you before ticketing that a cancellation before departure is free, that a no-show is not, and, on a partner award, which carrier's rules will govern a disruption. After that, a change or cancellation is one WhatsApp message: your concierge makes the change in My Trips or through reservations, confirms the miles are back in your account, and follows the tax refund through to your card. You never hold for the Service Center.
When plans move rather than die, we price the options side by side: reprice the award to the new dates, cancel and rebook at a lower dynamic level, or drop the award for one of our negotiated business-class fares, which on volatile itineraries can cost less all-in than the extra miles a dynamic change would eat and earns miles and Premier credit where the award earns nothing. You approve; we execute. Start a free flight quote and mention the confirmation number.

United Award Cancellation FAQs
Does United charge a fee to cancel an award ticket?
Not if you cancel before departure: United redeposits the award miles with no fee and refunds the taxes to the original form of payment. The exception is a no-show, where United charges a $125 service fee per ticket to redeposit the miles and states that the fee applies to all members.
How do I cancel a United flight booked with miles?
Open My Trips on united.com or in the United app, select "Cancel flight" and then "Confirm cancellation". The miles return to the account they were withdrawn from in five to seven business days and the taxes go back to the original card. If a trip was cancelled earlier and the miles have not appeared, contact the MileagePlus Service Center.
Is there a fee to change a United award ticket?
No change fee, on United, United Express and partner awards alike, but the difference in miles is charged when the new itinerary prices higher, and phone changes may carry the $25 agent fee. Same-day changes follow the Same-Day Change policy: free for Premier members within the same fare class, otherwise a possible price difference.
What happens if I no-show a United award flight?
The miles can still be redeposited, but United charges a $125 service fee per ticket to do it, the fee is non-refundable, and United publishes no waiver for Premier members. Cancel online any time before departure and the redeposit is free.
Can I get miles back for the unused return of a United award?
No. Only wholly unused or cancelled awards can be redeposited; if you redeem a round-trip award and travel one way, the unused portion is forfeited. Change the return to a date you will use rather than abandoning it.
Does United's 24-hour policy apply to award tickets?
United's 24-hour flexible booking policy applies to tickets booked directly with United at least one week before departure and cancelled within 24 hours of booking and ticketing, and nothing in it excludes awards; booking and service fees are refunded only inside that window. Money + Miles bookings can be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours but not changed.
Are the taxes refunded when I cancel a United award?
Yes. Award tickets have cash value only for the taxes, fees and surcharges paid, and United refunds those to the original form of payment, within seven business days for credit card purchases; requests for tax refunds go to refund accounting through the refund form. The $25 phone booking fee is refunded only if you cancel within 24 hours of purchase.
Can Biirdee cancel or change my United award for me?
Yes. For awards our desk books with your MileagePlus miles, changes and cancellations are handled end to end by your concierge over WhatsApp, including the departure deadline, the redeposit and the tax refund. If you booked the award yourself, send us the details and we will say which rule applies and whether repricing, cancelling and rebooking, or switching to one of our negotiated cash fares is the cheapest move.
