Flying On Within Japan With ANA Miles (2026): Free Connections to Sapporo, Okinawa and Beyond

Tokyo is rarely the only stop. ANA prices its awards by zone, not city, so the flight on to Okinawa or Hokkaido can ride along for free, if you follow the rules.

Flying On Within Japan With ANA Miles (2026): Free Connections to Sapporo, Okinawa and Beyond

The Short Answer

An ANA Mileage Club award to Japan can include one connection inside Japan in each direction at no extra miles, because ANA prices international awards by zone and all of Japan is one zone. A business class award from New York to Okinawa via Tokyo costs the same 50,000 miles one-way in low season as New York to Tokyo. Bought separately, that Tokyo to Okinawa flight would cost 8,000 to 12,000 miles as an ANA domestic award.

Three rules shape it. The domestic flight must be operated by ANA, it is booked in economy (the domestic cabin on international awards), and the connection must be within 24 hours. A longer stay in Tokyo on the way, a stopover, is possible only on a round trip that starts outside Japan.

Key Takeaways

  • One connection inside Japan per direction is included in an ANA international award, on ANA-operated flights.
  • The domestic leg is economy, but a business or first class award still prices at the higher cabin, so the connection costs nothing extra.
  • Connections must be within 24 hours. A round trip that starts outside Japan can add one stopover of more than 24 hours, such as a few days in Tokyo on the way to Okinawa.
  • One-way awards allow no stopovers, and a one-way allows only one connection in Japan.
  • A separate ANA domestic award costs 6,000 to 13,000 miles one-way, economy only, by distance and season.

The Rules, From ANA's Pages

Connections. On ANA's own international flights, a one-way award allows up to one transfer in Japan, and a round trip allows one in Japan on the outbound and one on the return. Transfers at the destination do not count, and a ground segment counts as a transfer at both ends. Partner awards allow the same one connection in Japan per direction, plus up to two overseas.

Which flights. Awards can only be used for Japan domestic connections operated by ANA. Codeshare flights flown by ANA's affiliated airlines (AIR DO, IBEX Airlines, Oriental Air Bridge, Solaseed Air, StarFlyer, Japan Air Commuter and Amakusa Airlines) cannot be used for the connection on a partner award, and ANA's international award rules likewise require the connection to be ANA-operated.

Cabins. The Japan domestic segments on an international award are economy reservations. When a one-way itinerary mixes cabins, ANA charges the mileage of the higher cabin, so a business class award with an economy connection costs the business price and nothing more.

Routing. A trip cannot connect through its own starting point or destination, so Tokyo to Sapporo to Tokyo to Frankfurt does not work, but Seoul to Tokyo to Fukuoka on the way home does. On a round trip, if the outbound destination and the return's starting point differ, they must be in the same area, so flying into Sapporo and home from Okinawa is fine.

Adding a Stopover in Japan

A stopover is a stay of more than 24 hours at a point that is not the destination. ANA allows one on a round-trip award on its own flights, but only when the trip starts outside Japan, and none on one-way awards or on trips that start in Japan. ANA's own example: Honolulu to Tokyo with a stopover, on to Okinawa, then Okinawa to Tokyo to Honolulu with a same-day connection.

That makes a round trip the right booking for a two-city Japan trip: several days in Tokyo, then on to Okinawa, Sapporo or Ishigaki, home via Tokyo, all on one award at the price of a round trip to Japan. Stopovers count as one of the itinerary's transfers. Changing a stopover to a connection, or the reverse, after booking has to be done by phone.

When a Separate Domestic Award Makes Sense

If you want more than one flight inside Japan, or a flight on a different day from your international arrival, the connection rules will not stretch that far, and a separate ANA domestic award is the tool. It is bookable one-way or round trip in economy (premium class is not available on awards), includes free advance seat selection and one checked bag up to 23 kg, and charges a domestic passenger facility charge at some airports. A connecting domestic itinerary of two flights within 24 hours can be one award, priced by route.

Domestic awards also follow ANA's award-user rules: the member, a spouse or partner and relatives within two degrees. Their seasons differ from the international ones; in 2027, for instance, domestic high season includes 12 to 31 March and 1 October to 23 November.

How Biirdee Plans Multi-City Japan Trips

We build the award so the extra flight rides free where ANA's rules allow it: the connection on the way in or out, a stopover on a round trip, and a separate domestic award or a cash ticket only where those run out. Tell us the cities and the miles you hold in a free flight quote. For the seasons that set the price, see ANA's 2027 award seasons; for the rest of the program, our ANA Mileage Club guide.

ANA Japan Connection FAQs

Can I fly to Okinawa on an ANA award to Tokyo for no extra miles?

Yes. An ANA international award includes one connection inside Japan per direction on an ANA-operated flight, priced as part of the trip to Japan, as long as the connection is within 24 hours.

Can I stop in Tokyo for a few days on the way to Sapporo?

On a round-trip award on ANA's own flights that starts outside Japan, yes: one stopover of more than 24 hours is allowed besides the destination. One-way awards and trips that start in Japan allow none.

What cabin is the domestic flight on an ANA business class award?

Economy. The award still prices at the business class rate, so the connection adds no miles.

How many miles is an ANA domestic award?

From 6,000 miles one-way for short routes in low season to 13,000 for the longest routes, such as Tokyo to Ishigaki, in high season, economy only.
