Is the ANA Round-the-World Award Still Available? What Ended in June 2025, and What to Book Instead

For years it was the most famous award in miles: up to eight stopovers around the globe on one ticket. ANA ended it in June 2025. Here is what it was, and how to get close on ANA miles today.

Is the ANA Round-the-World Award Still Available? What Ended in June 2025, and What to Book Instead

The Short Answer

No. ANA stopped issuing new Star Alliance Round the World award tickets on 23 June 2025 (Japan time), the day before it introduced one-way awards and a revised chart. Round-the-world tickets issued up to that date can still be used until they expire, including changes, under the rules they were issued with.

What replaced it is a set of tools rather than a single ticket: one-way awards at half the round-trip price on ANA and partner flights, a stopover on round-trip awards, and open jaws. With them you can still circle the globe on ANA miles, as several awards instead of one, and usually for more miles.

Key Takeaways

  • ANA issued its last round-the-world awards on 23 June 2025; tickets issued by then stay valid until their expiry date.
  • The award allowed up to 8 stopovers (3 in Europe, 4 in Japan), 12 flights and 4 surface sectors, crossing the Atlantic and Pacific once each, in one direction, on Star Alliance airlines.
  • It was priced by total distance, from 38,000 miles in economy to 450,000 in first for the longest trips.
  • Today the closest substitute is a chain of one-way awards: US to Europe to Japan to the US in business costs 157,500 to 190,000 miles on ANA's current charts, depending on the season of the last flight.

What the Award Was

The Star Alliance Round the World award let an ANA member fly around the globe on Star Alliance airlines on a single ticket. ANA's rules required the trip to cross both the Atlantic and the Pacific once, travel in one direction (east to west or west to east) with no backtracking, and return to the starting country no sooner than 10 days after the first international flight. It allowed up to 8 stopovers between the departure point and the final return point, no more than 3 of them in Europe and 4 in Japan, and up to 12 flights plus 4 ground sectors.

It was priced by adding up the basic sector mileage of every flight and finding the band, the same price in any season. A mixed-cabin trip paid the price of the highest cabin in it. The award could only be booked by phone, only on Star Alliance member airlines, and the rest of the partner-award rules (who can use the miles, refunds, surcharges) applied to it.

If You Hold an Old Round-the-World Ticket

ANA says round-the-world tickets issued up to 23 June 2025 can be used as usual until their expiry date, including changes. Partner award tickets are valid for one year from the first flight, and the first flight had to be within a year of issue, so the last of them run into 2027. Changes and refunds follow the partner-award rules: changes by phone, at least 96 hours before the new flight, and a refund only if the whole ticket is unused, for 3,000 miles (awards issued before 24 June 2025 cannot pay that fee by card). Our ANA award cancellation guide sets out those rules.

How to Build a Multi-Stop Trip on ANA Miles Now

String one-way awards together. Since 24 June 2025 every ANA and partner award can be booked one-way at exactly half the round-trip price. A partner one-way allows up to three connections (one in Japan and two elsewhere) but no stopover, so each stop of more than 24 hours becomes the start of the next award. The awards are priced separately, so each one is just the chart price between its two zones.

Here is a business class loop from the US with today's charts: the US to Europe on a Star Alliance partner such as United or Lufthansa (50,000 miles), Europe to Japan on a partner (57,500 on a simple itinerary), and Japan back to the US on ANA (50,000 in low season, 52,500 in regular, 82,500 in high). That is 157,500 to 190,000 miles, plus each airline's surcharges and taxes. Flying the Europe to Japan leg on ANA itself instead prices it from ANA's seasonal chart (55,000 to 90,000).

Use the stopover on a round trip. A round-trip partner award allows one stopover besides the destination, and a round trip on ANA's own flights allows one too when it starts outside Japan, so a US to Japan round trip can include a stopover in Tokyo on the way to Okinawa or Sapporo. Open jaws are allowed within ANA's rules: the US and Canada count as one country for where a trip starts and ends, and a round trip can fly into one European city and home from another, such as into London and home from Frankfurt.

Mind the rules the old award did not have. A partner itinerary cannot connect through a zone that costs more to reach than the destination, and partner awards cannot mix Star Alliance airlines with ANA's non-alliance partners such as Etihad or Virgin Atlantic, which must be booked on their own. Round trips open for booking only 355 days before the return flight, so book long trips as one-ways.
