ANA Mileage Club Award Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel or Change an ANA Award
One flat fee to cancel, free date changes on the same route, and a hard line at departure: ANA's exact rules for international, partner and upgrade awards, straight from ana.co.jp.
By Biirdee Travel, Luxury Travel Concierge · Updated October 3, 2026

The Short Answer
As of October 2026, cancelling an unused ANA Mileage Club award and getting the miles back costs 3,000 miles per person, or ¥3,000 per person paid by credit card (the local equivalent outside Japan). The fee is the same for ANA's own flights and for Star Alliance and other partner awards. Changing the date or flight on the same route costs nothing; you only pay, or get back, the mileage difference if the new date falls in a different season.
Three conditions decide whether anything comes back. Every flight on the award must be unused, the cancellation must be made before the first flight departs, and the miles must not have expired while they sat inside the ticket. Miss the departure and the award is gone, miles and all.
The card option exists only on awards reserved and ticketed since 24 June 2025, can only be used on the ANA website, and is not offered on awards issued from European countries (other than Turkey and Russia), India or Mexico. Older awards and those markets pay in miles. This page sets out the fee table, how to cancel and change, the partner and upgrade rules, what happens when ANA cancels your flight, and the ana.co.jp pages behind each rule. For the program itself see our ANA Mileage Club guide; for every major program side by side see award ticket cancellation fees compared.
Key Takeaways
- Cancel and redeposit: 3,000 miles per person, or ¥3,000 per person by card on the ANA website, on ANA and partner awards alike; taxes are refunded.
- The award must be completely unused and cancelled before the first flight departs; a no-show forfeits the miles.
- Date and flight changes on the same route are free: on ANA flights up to 24 hours before the new flight, on partner flights up to 96 hours before it.
- Miles that expired while inside the ticket are not returned, so check expiry dates before you cancel.
- When ANA cancels or delays a flight, or weather does, there is no fee, and even expired miles come back with a fresh 36-month life.
- Upgrade awards on paid tickets refund free up to 24 hours before the flight.

How to Cancel an ANA Award
Step 1: log in to the ANA website as the member whose miles paid for the award and open the booking from Reservation Details. Step 2: choose to refund it, and pick the fee: ¥3,000 by card, or 3,000 miles taken from your account (the miles option deducts the soonest-expiring miles first). Step 3: the miles return to the same mileage account groups they came from, with their original expiry dates, within about 10 days. Taxes and fees come back too.
The card option is online only. The miles option also works through the ANA Reservation and Customer Service Center, which you need anyway for an award with an infant on a separate ticket and for awards issued from ANA's Mexico site. Nothing can be done at the airport. Refund requests must reach ANA within 30 days after the ticket's expiry date, but the deadline that matters is earlier: the first flight's departure.
Two smaller rules. The fee is charged per person, so a booking for four costs 12,000 miles to cancel. And if the miles to be refunded would be fewer than the fee, ANA will not process the refund at all.
How to Change an ANA Award
On an award for ANA's own flights you can move to another flight on the same route, on another date, in the same cabin, from the Reservation Details page. After ticketing, the change must be made before your original flight leaves and at least 24 hours before the new flight. That is the useful part: ANA stops selling new awards 96 hours before departure, but an award you already hold can be moved onto a flight leaving as soon as tomorrow, if award space is open. Before ticketing, changes run until the waitlist deadline 14 days before departure.
ANA lists no change fee. If the new date falls in a different season, you pay the extra miles (only miles; cash is not accepted) or get the difference back with its original expiry date. Tax and surcharge differences can also apply, because ANA recalculates them on the new ticket.
Some changes have to go through the phone: an itinerary with stopovers in more than one city, a change inside 24 hours of any flight on the itinerary, swapping a stopover for a connection or the reverse, joining a waitlist on a full flight (at least 14 days out), and moving to a lower cabin when the higher one sold out, where ANA does not refund the mileage difference. What cannot be changed at all: the airline, the passenger, the route, the cabin you paid for, the member whose miles were used, and a round trip into a one-way or back. For those, cancel for 3,000 miles and rebook.
Partner Awards and Upgrade Awards
Awards on Star Alliance and other partners follow the same refund table: 3,000 miles or ¥3,000 per person, everything unused, before the first flight. Changes are stricter on timing. The new flight must be at least 96 hours away, and online changes close 96 hours before the first flight of the itinerary; after that, and for itineraries the website cannot handle, ANA changes partner awards by phone without a reissue charge. Partner awards cannot be waitlisted, so a change is only possible into open award space.
Upgrade awards, where miles move a paid ANA ticket up a cabin, cost nothing to refund as long as the upgrade has not been used and you ask by 24 hours before the flight, online or by phone during business hours. Miss the departure and the upgrade miles are lost. An upgrade cannot be edited in place: to change the flight, refund the upgrade before the original departure and apply again for the new one.
When ANA Cancels or Delays Your Flight
If an ANA flight is cancelled or delayed by weather, equipment problems or anything else attributable to ANA, you can move to other ANA flights or have the miles refunded, and ANA charges no fee either way. These are the most generous rules in the program. A date change that lands in a more expensive season costs no extra miles, while one that lands in a cheaper season refunds the difference. Even miles that expired while inside the ticket are refunded, and refunded miles get a fresh validity, to the end of the month 36 months after the refund.
If you have already flown part of the trip, ANA refunds the miles for the unused flights by formula (the miles for each direction divided by its number of flights). Disruption refunds go through the ANA website within 30 days after the ticket expires, and partial refunds are handled by phone. Two limits: the rules cover awards ANA issued (ticket numbers starting 205), not an ANA flight booked with another airline's miles, which follows that program's rules; and if a flight is merely delayed, the original date's season still applies.
Expiring Miles and Who Can Be Changed
ANA miles expire at the end of the 36th month after the month they were earned, and the refund rules do not bend for them: miles that have expired by the time a personal-reasons refund is processed are not returned, and miles that expire while you sit on a waitlist are lost too. If the miles behind a booking you might cancel are close to their date, use them on a change rather than a cancellation, or cancel early.
Names are fixed. The passenger and the member who provided the miles cannot be changed on a ticketed award, and awards can only be used by the member, a spouse or same-sex partner and relatives within two degrees who are registered as award users. Changing or deleting a registered award user costs 5,000 miles, waived for family-registry changes and spelling corrections.
How Biirdee Handles ANA Changes and Cancellations
When Biirdee books an ANA award with your miles, we set out the exit rules before ticketing: the 3,000-mile cancellation, the free date changes, and the departure deadline. After that a change is one WhatsApp message. We move the award onto new dates while it is still changeable, which on ANA's own flights can mean a seat leaving the next day, and we cancel before departure so the miles never lapse. If ANA disrupts the trip, we claim the fee-free rebooking or refund.
When plans move rather than die, we price the options side by side: a free date change, a cancel and rebook in a cheaper season, or a discounted business class fare through our contracts that leaves the miles untouched. Start a free flight quote and mention the booking reference.

ANA Award Cancellation FAQs
How much does it cost to cancel an ANA award ticket?
3,000 miles per person, or ¥3,000 per person paid by card on the ANA website (the local equivalent outside Japan), for ANA and partner awards. Taxes are refunded. The award must be unused and cancelled before the first flight departs.
Can I change the date of an ANA award for free?
Yes, on the same route and in the same cabin. On ANA's own flights the change can be made up to 24 hours before the new flight, as long as the original flight has not left; on partner flights, up to 96 hours before. You only pay or recover the mileage difference if the season changes.
What happens if I miss my ANA award flight?
The award is forfeited: ANA refunds nothing on an award that was not cancelled before departure, and nothing on one that has been partly flown.
Do I get my miles back if ANA cancels my flight?
Yes, with no fee. You can move to other ANA flights or take a refund, and even miles that expired inside the ticket come back, valid for another 36 months. This covers awards ANA issued, not ANA flights booked with another airline's miles.
Can I cancel an ANA award by phone?
Yes, but only with the 3,000-mile fee: the ¥3,000 card option is online only. Some refunds must be made by phone, such as awards with an infant ticket or awards issued from ANA's Mexico site.
How long does an ANA award refund take?
ANA says about 10 days for the miles to return to your account, with their original expiry dates.
