Avios is the shared currency of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, and Qatar Airways. Balances move freely between these programs through household-account-style linking, which turns one currency into five sets of award charts and five pools of inventory — the closest thing to arbitrage that exists in the loyalty world.
British Airways' own scheme, renamed The British Airways Club from the long-standing Executive Club, overhauled status earning in 2025: Tier Points now accrue on revenue spent rather than distance and cabin flown, bringing BA in line with the US revenue-based model. Status tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold) map to oneworld Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.
For redemptions, Avios prices most awards by distance bands. Short flights cost few points; long flights cost more; the price of a partner seat is a function of how far it flies. That single design choice creates both the program's celebrated sweet spots and its famous trap — and knowing which is which is most of the skill.

The defining Avios move is booking the same physical seat through the cheapest of the five programs. Qatar Airways flights often price better through Qatar Privilege Club than through BA; Iberia's own long-haul awards carry materially lower surcharges than BA's; Finnair's program has its own quirks and occasional bargains. Because balances transfer between the five at 1:1, you hold one pile and shop five storefronts.
For US-based travelers the daily-driver use case is simpler: short American Airlines flights. Booking AA domestic hops with Avios instead of AAdvantage miles routinely costs half the miles for the identical seat — the canonical example of the cross-program thinking in our maximization playbook.
The trap to respect: BA attaches hefty carrier-imposed surcharges to its own long-haul awards. Avios is the currency; The British Airways Club (formerly the Executive Club) is BA's loyalty program that uses it. Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, and Qatar Airways run their own programs denominated in the same Avios, and balances can be moved between them.
All five major US transferable programs: American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One Miles, and Bilt Rewards — generally 1:1 to British Airways, with several also reaching Qatar or Iberia directly. Transfer bonuses of 25–40% appear several times a year.
Avios generally expire after 36 months without any earning or redemption activity. A single transfer or purchase resets the clock across the linked balance.
