British Airways Avios Reward Flight Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel a Ticket Booked With Avios
The flat per-person fee, the 24-hours-before-departure deadline that decides whether your Avios come back, and the cases where you have to call, straight from ba.com.
By Biirdee Travel, Luxury Travel Concierge · Updated September 18, 2026

The Short Answer
As of September 2026, British Airways charges a flat service fee to cancel a Reward Flight booked with Avios and have the Avios returned: £35 per person for bookings departing the UK and Ireland, $55 per person for bookings departing North America, and €42.50 per person from the eurozone. The same fee applies to a change of date, time or cabin. Cancel more than 24 hours before the first flight in the itinerary and every Avios is re-credited to your account, with the taxes, fees and carrier charges you paid refunded to the original card minus the fee. Cancel inside 24 hours, or fail to show up, and the Avios are gone.
The cheapest way to do either is Manage My Booking on ba.com, where the fee specific to your booking is shown before you confirm. Doing it through the contact center adds a further Service Centre fee of £15, $25 or €15 per person, waived for Gold members. Changes are narrower than most travelers expect: only the date, time, class of service and, on Avios-only bookings, the route can change, the new flight has to price at the same Avios level or you pay the peak difference, and any change must be made at least 24 hours before the flight being changed departs.
British Airways renamed its program The British Airways Club in April 2025 and the Club's Terms and Conditions (effective 1 April 2026) carry the rules below in clauses 15 to 17; the fee amounts live on a separate booking and service fees page. For the program itself see our British Airways Club and Avios guide; for every major program side by side see award ticket cancellation fees compared.
Key Takeaways
- Cancellation and Avios redeposit costs a flat £35, $55 or €42.50 per person depending on where the booking departs, deducted from the cash you paid; the Avios come back in full.
- The deadline is 24 hours before the first flight, not departure itself: inside that window the Avios are forfeited, and a no-show also cancels any onward or return flights.
- Changes cost the same fee per person, are limited to date, time, cabin and (on Avios-only bookings) route, must keep the same Avios price or you pay the peak difference, and must be made at least 24 hours before the flight changes.
- Cancelling by phone adds a Service Centre fee of £15, $25 or €15 per person; Gold members pay no phone fee and no change fee on Gold Priority Reward bookings.
- Within 24 hours of booking direct with BA you can cancel for a full refund without penalty (UK bookings for travel within 24 hours excluded; US bookings must be a week or more from departure).
British Airways Reward Flight Change and Cancellation Rules at a Glance
Every row is British Airways' own rule as published on ba.com in September 2026. Fees are per person, per ticket, and vary by region of departure; the three figures shown are the UK and Ireland, North America and eurozone rates.
| Situation | What it costs | The rule, as British Airways states it |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel more than 24 hours before the first flight | £35 / $55 / €42.50 per person; Avios re-credited in full; taxes, fees and charges refunded minus the fee | "Provided a cancellation is made more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the first flight in the reward itinerary, the Avios charged for the reward will be re-credited to the member's account" |
| Change the date, time or cabin | £35 / $55 / €42.50 per person, plus any Avios difference when moving from an off-peak to a peak date | "All permitted changes are subject to capacity limitations and must be made a minimum of 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the flight being changed" |
| Change or cancel through the contact center | An additional Service Centre fee of £15 / $25 / €15 per person | "No additional service charge for Gold members" |
| Cancel within 24 hours of departure, or no-show | Avios forfeited; taxes, fees and charges you paid are refunded, but the cash part of an Avios & Money booking is not | "Failure to utilise a Reward Flight i.e. 'no show', will result in the airline's cancellation of any onward or return reservations and Avios cannot be re-credited" |
| Cancel within 24 hours of booking (booked direct with BA) | Full refund without penalty | UK: excludes bookings for travel within 24 hours; US: travel must be a week or more from the date of purchase, and the deadline extends to 48 hours if the call center was closed |
| Partially flown reward | No Avios refund | "Avios will not be refunded for partially flown bookings" |
| Reward Flight Saver booking | Same fee and same 24-hour rule; the flat cash price and the Avios come back minus the fee; nothing inside 24 hours | "No refunds are available for cancellations within 24 hours of the departure time" |
| Booking made with a Companion Voucher | Fee applies; the voucher is reinstated for its remaining validity if you cancel more than 24 hours before departure, and lost inside 24 hours; must be handled by phone | "If travel using a Companion Voucher is cancelled less than 24 hours prior to departure, then the Companion Voucher will not be re-issued" |
| Reward on Iberia, American, Qatar or another oneworld partner | Same fees and 24-hour rule; the partner's own terms also apply, and the cash for taxes and carrier charges is variable rather than fixed | "Rewards for travel on airline partner flights are subject to the relevant Terms and Conditions of the airline partner" |
| Gold Priority Reward booking | No change fee | "No charge for changes to Gold Priority Reward bookings" |
How to Cancel a British Airways Reward Flight
Step 1: sign in to ba.com and open the booking in Manage My Booking. British Airways lets you cancel a Reward Flight booking in its entirety there, and the cancellation fee specific to your booking is displayed as part of the process, so you see the exact deduction before you confirm. Step 2: confirm the cancellation. The Avios return to the Club account that paid for the flight and the cash refund, taxes, fees and carrier charges minus the service fee, goes back to the card used for the booking; BA can only refund the card you paid with, so a closed card needs the card issuer's help. Step 3: keep the confirmation email, because BA publishes no fixed timeline for UK refunds beyond "as quickly as possible"; for tickets bought in the US it commits to seven business days for card payments and 20 for cheques.
Some reward bookings cannot be cancelled or changed online and have to go through the contact center (0344 493 0750 in the UK, 800-AIRWAYS in the US): any booking made with a Companion Voucher or Travel Together Ticket, any booking that contains a connecting flight, any booking that has been upgraded with Avios, a change from an off-peak to a peak date, and a change from a peak to an off-peak date where you want the Avios difference refunded immediately. Expect the Service Centre fee on top unless you hold Gold.
The deadline is the one detail that decides everything. BA's Terms and Conditions re-credit the Avios only when the cancellation is made more than 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the first flight in the reward itinerary; a cancellation inside that window, or a no-show, forfeits the Avios and, for a no-show, cancels any onward or return flights too. The only exception is an "event beyond your control", where BA will refund the Avios if you inform it promptly, provide evidence when asked, and pay the applicable fee. Our rule for clients: if there is any doubt about a trip, cancel at 25 hours, not 23.
How to Change a British Airways Reward Flight
BA permits changes to a Reward Flight in respect of date, time, class of service and route only, and every change must be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the flight being changed. Simple date and time changes on BA-operated flights can be made in Manage My Booking; the fee, £35, $55 or €42.50 per person, is the same as for a cancellation, and any Avios difference is shown before you confirm. Moving from an off-peak date to a peak one costs the extra Avios; moving the other way refunds the difference, though on an Avios part-payment booking the cash portion of the price cannot be refunded, and BA suggests cancelling and rebooking in that case.
Two restrictions catch people out. A route or date change is only permitted where the new itinerary would, on the day you request it, require the same number of Avios as the original booking, and route changes are only allowed on bookings paid with Avios alone (other than the taxes, fees and charges). Where BA offered more than one Avios & Money price option for the flight, you cannot switch price option or class of service after booking at all. In practice, a change that moves the booking across those lines is a cancel-and-rebook, with the cancellation fee rather than the change fee.
Because the two fees are identical, the change-versus-cancel decision on BA comes down to availability and Avios price: if the new flight has reward space at the same level, change; if you need a different route, a different airline, or want to capture cheaper pricing, cancel and rebook, and remember that both routes require the 24-hour cushion. Changing a Companion Voucher booking to a different carrier is explicitly a cancel-and-rebook under the voucher terms.
Reward Flight Saver, Avios & Money, Vouchers and Partner Awards
Reward Flight Saver bookings, the flat-cash-plus-Avios pricing on most BA short-haul and long-haul rewards, follow the same rules: cancel more than 24 hours before the outbound departure and the flat cash price and the Avios are refunded for the fee stated on ba.com; cancel within 24 hours and no refund is available at all. Date and time changes are permitted for the fee, name changes are not, and either can be done on ba.com or by phone. BA states the fee as a flat £35 per person and publishes no lower cap, so on a short-haul Saver where the cash element was small, expect most or all of that cash to be absorbed while the Avios come back in full.
Avios & Money bookings, where you took a cash-heavier price option, refund the cash and the taxes, fees and surcharges and re-credit the Avios when cancelled more than 24 hours out, with the standard redemption charge applied; inside 24 hours there is no cash refund and no Avios. Avios used as part payment against a cash fare are a different animal: they are refundable only where the underlying fare is refundable, and a partial refund is split between your Avios balance and the original card.
Bookings on Iberia, American Airlines, Qatar Airways and the other oneworld partners carry the same fee and the same 24-hour rule under clause 17.2, with the partner's own terms layered on top and a variable rather than fixed cash component for taxes and carrier charges. Companion Voucher bookings have their own reinstatement rule: cancel more than 24 hours before departure and the voucher returns to your account for the remainder of its original validity; cancel inside 24 hours and it is lost with the Avios. Gold upgrade vouchers and Avios used to upgrade a cash ticket follow the same 24-hour line.
Taxes, Surcharges and Refund Timing
British Airways rewards carry some of the highest cash components in the loyalty world: a long-haul business class Reward Flight in BA's own metal can come with several hundred pounds or dollars in taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges. The good news is that those amounts are refundable when you cancel more than 24 hours before departure; the £35, $55 or €42.50 service fee is deducted from them and the rest goes back to the original form of payment. Even inside the 24-hour window, BA's Reward Flights page states that taxes, fees and charges you paid are refunded to the original form of payment; only the Avios, and the cash part of an Avios & Money price, are lost.
Refunds go to the card used for the booking and nowhere else. For UK bookings BA commits only to resolving refunds "as quickly as possible", allowing for the bank's processing time; for tickets purchased in the US it commits to seven business days for card and cash purchases (up to two billing cycles to appear) and 20 business days for cheques, and to refunding in the original form of payment, airline miles included. BA does not publish a timeline for the Avios re-credit itself.
Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rules
There are two 24-hour rules on a BA reward and they run in opposite directions. The first is the cooling-off period after booking: if you booked directly with British Airways you can cancel for a full refund without penalty up to 24 hours from the original booking, online in Manage My Booking or by phone; BA's UK commitment excludes bookings for travel within 24 hours, and its US commitment adds that travel must be a week or more from the date of purchase, extending the deadline to 48 hours if the call center was closed when you first tried. BA states that Avios bookings can be managed online under this rule.
The second is the cut-off before departure. Avios are re-credited only for cancellations made more than 24 hours before the first flight in the itinerary, changes must be made at least 24 hours before the flight being changed, and reward bookings themselves must be made at least 24 hours before departure. Miss the window and the Avios are forfeited; a no-show additionally cancels any onward or return flights. BA also requires travel to be completed within 12 months of the outbound date, and Avios expire after 36 months without any earning, spending, buying or sharing activity, so a re-credit onto a dormant account should be followed by some activity.
If British Airways cancels or significantly changes the flight, the normal fee rules do not apply: under UK and EU passenger rights and the US Department of Transportation refund rule you are owed a full refund, Avios and cash, when you choose not to travel, and BA will otherwise rebook you. Our award cancellation fees guide covers those involuntary-change rules for every program.
How Biirdee Makes Avios Changes and Cancellations Seamless
When Biirdee books a Reward Flight with your Avios, we tell you before ticketing which region's fee applies, whether the booking is Avios-only or Avios & Money, and therefore exactly what changing or cancelling would cost and by when. After that, a change or cancellation is one WhatsApp message: your concierge handles Manage My Booking or the contact center, watches the 24-hour cut-off so a change of plan never becomes a forfeiture, confirms the Avios are back in your account and follows the refund through to your card, including the voucher reinstatement on Companion Voucher bookings.
When plans move rather than die, we price the options side by side: change the date and pay the fee plus any peak difference, cancel and rebook, or drop the reward and take one of our negotiated business-class fares, which can be cheaper all-in than a BA long-haul reward once its carrier charges are counted, and which earn Avios and tier points where the reward earns nothing. You approve; we execute. Start a free flight quote and mention the booking reference.

British Airways Avios Cancellation FAQs
How much does it cost to cancel a British Airways Avios booking?
A flat service fee per person, set by where the booking departs: £35 for the UK and Ireland, $55 for North America, €42.50 for the eurozone. The fee is deducted from the taxes, fees and charges you paid, and every Avios is re-credited, provided you cancel more than 24 hours before the first flight. Cancelling through the contact center adds £15, $25 or €15 per person unless you are Gold.
Do I get my Avios back if I cancel a Reward Flight?
Yes, in full, if the cancellation is made more than 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the first flight in the itinerary. Cancel inside 24 hours or no-show and the Avios are not re-credited; a no-show also cancels any onward or return flights. Avios are never refunded on a partially flown booking.
How do I cancel a British Airways reward flight online?
Sign in to ba.com, open the booking in Manage My Booking and cancel the booking in its entirety; the cancellation fee specific to your booking is displayed before you confirm. Bookings made with a Companion Voucher or Travel Together Ticket, bookings with a connecting flight, and bookings upgraded with Avios must be cancelled through the contact centre.
Can I change the date of a British Airways Avios booking?
Yes, for the same £35, $55 or €42.50 per-person fee, as long as the change is made at least 24 hours before the flight being changed departs and reward space exists. Only the date, time, class of service and (on Avios-only bookings) route can change, the new flight must price at the same Avios level or you pay the difference between off-peak and peak, and a move from off-peak to peak has to be done by phone.
Are the taxes and surcharges refunded when I cancel an Avios booking?
Yes. Cancel more than 24 hours before departure and the taxes, fees and carrier charges are refunded to the original card minus the service fee. Even inside 24 hours, BA's Reward Flights page says the taxes, fees and charges you paid are refunded; what you lose in that window is the Avios and the cash part of an Avios & Money price.
What happens to my Companion Voucher if I cancel?
Cancel more than 24 hours before departure and the voucher is re-issued to your account for the remainder of its original validity, 12 months from issue for the standard card and 24 months for Premium Plus. Cancel less than 24 hours before departure and the voucher is not re-issued. Voucher bookings must be changed or cancelled by phone.
Is there a fee to cancel a Reward Flight Saver booking?
Yes, the same fee stated on ba.com, £35 per person in the UK. Cancel more than 24 hours before the outbound departure and the flat cash price and the Avios are refunded minus the fee; cancel within 24 hours of departure and no refund is available. BA publishes no lower cap on the fee, so on a short-haul Saver with a small cash element expect most of that cash to be absorbed.
Can Biirdee cancel or change my BA Avios booking for me?
Yes. For rewards our desk books with your Avios, changes and cancellations are handled end to end by your concierge over WhatsApp, including the 24-hour cut-off, the Avios re-credit, the card refund and any voucher reinstatement. If you booked it yourself, send us the details and we will say which rule applies and whether changing, cancelling and rebooking, or switching to one of our negotiated cash fares is the cheapest move.
