Is SkyAccess Legit? What We Learned When Our Confirmed Empty Leg Was Pulled

The Short Answer

Yes. SkyAccess is a real company: a Los Angeles marketplace that sells empty legs on private jets, flown by FAA-certified charter operators, with no membership fee.

Like any empty leg, a SkyAccess booking can be cancelled after you pay. If it is, you get a refund, and finding another jet is up to you. That happened to a flight we booked for clients, the day before departure.

Our booking

What happened

  1. 1Booked

    We booked an instant-book flight

A heavy jet for a group of our clients. SkyAccess’s terms say an instant booking is "confirmed when you complete checkout".

  2. 2Cancelled

It was cancelled the day before

Less than 24 hours before departure, SkyAccess told us the operator had taken the aircraft back, using what it called a "first right of refusal".

  3. 3Rebooked

    We found another jet

SkyAccess refunded the booking, but rebooking was up to us. We had our clients on a different aircraft the same day.

  4. 4Flew

    The trip went ahead

Our clients flew as planned. The replacement cost about $5,000 more than the empty leg, which we covered.

What We Learned

  • Instant book means you are charged right away. It does not mean the jet is yours.
  • Before you pay, ask whether the operator or owner can still take the aircraft back, and until when.
  • A last-minute replacement costs full price, so know your backup before you book.

How SkyAccess Works

SkyAccess is a marketplace, not an airline. Its terms of service say flights "are operated by independent charter operators certified under FAA Part 135", and that SkyAccess "does not operate aircraft". It launched publicly in September 2025.

Its pitch, from its App Store listing: "No membership. No annual dues. No sales calls. Search, see the price, book." Some flights book instantly; others wait for the operator to confirm before you are charged. Corporate Jet Investor reports more than 400 operators on the platform.

SkyAccess is upfront that empty legs move: its app listing says routes, dates and aircraft "cannot be guaranteed". Its terms do not set out a refund policy or what happens when an operator cancels, so ask about both before you book.

Why Any Empty Leg Can Be Pulled

  • The trip that created it changes. An empty leg only exists because a paying charter left the aircraft out of position.
  • The owner wants the aircraft. Most charter jets are privately owned, and owners usually come first.
  • A full-price charter comes along. Operators can sell the same aircraft to a customer paying the full rate.
  • Maintenance or crew limits. These can cancel any charter, not only empty legs.

Sellers say so themselves. Magellan Jets: "Are empty leg flights guaranteed once booked? No." Vaunt tells members operators may cancel "for any reason, including… the sale of the flight to a paying charter customer". A "first right of refusal", as in our case, is one more version of the same priority.

It Is Not Just SkyAccess

Travelers on other platforms describe the same thing, in their own words.

PlatformWhat they said
Vaunt"The day of the flight - it was cancelled... Now I am out another $1000." (Reddit, 2026)
XO"I’ve been cancelled on twice because the owner wanted to use their jet" (Reddit, 2025)
VistaJet"They cancelled 3 days prior stating scheduling conflicts." (Reddit, 2026)
JetSmarter (now XO)"I booked FIVE empty legs and all FIVE were canceled, sometimes with only an hour’s notice." (FlyerTalk, 2016)

Seven Questions to Ask Before You Pay

  • Who operates the flight, and under which FAA certificate? A US broker must tell you before you book.
  • Can the operator or owner still take the aircraft back, and until when?
  • What are the operator’s cancellation terms? Get them in writing.
  • If the leg is cancelled, how much comes back, including fees, and how fast?
  • Am I paying by personal credit card? It gives you dispute rights a wire does not.
  • What would a backup jet cost today?
  • What else am I booking that I cannot refund, such as hotels or events?

What the Rules Say

In the US, a company that sells you a charter on someone else’s aircraft is a broker under 14 CFR Part 295. It must name the operator before you book, and refund promptly if the flight cannot happen.

No rule entitles you to a replacement jet or to the cost of one. And DOT’s 2024 airline refund rule does not cover private charters.

So, Is SkyAccess Legit?

Yes. SkyAccess is a nice product: real operators, clear prices, no membership fee and good reviews (Trustpilot: 4.6 out of 5). For browsing empty legs, it is genuinely helpful.

Where it falls short is when a flight is cancelled: you get a refund, not another jet, and finding a replacement is up to you. If you want that handled for you, work with us. We book the jet, and if anything changes, we rebook you.

Flying Private? Let Biirdee Handle It

  • The best price we can find, across empty legs, the unpublished legs operators share with brokers, and full charters.
  • Any jet, anywhere, on your schedule.
  • One concierge from booking to landing, not an app.
  • Re-protection: if a flight falls through, we put you on another jet. When ours was pulled the day before, our clients flew the same day.

SkyAccess and Empty Leg FAQs

Is SkyAccess legit?

Yes, it is a real company: SkyAccess Inc. runs a Los Angeles marketplace for private-jet empty legs flown by FAA Part 135 operators, with no membership fee and ratings of 4.6 to 5.0 out of 5. But a booking is not a guarantee: ours was cancelled less than 24 hours before departure when the operator took the aircraft back. Book with a backup, or through a charter desk that will rebook you.

Can a confirmed SkyAccess booking be cancelled?

Yes, as with any empty leg, even an instant booking. When ours was cancelled, SkyAccess refunded us, but finding another jet was up to us. Before you pay, ask whether the operator or owner can still reclaim the aircraft, and until when.

What is a first right of refusal on an empty leg?

A priority right, held by the operator or the aircraft’s owner, to use the aircraft for something else, such as a full-price charter or the owner’s own trip, ahead of a discounted empty-leg sale.

Do you get a refund if an empty leg is cancelled?

Usually the money you paid, but not the cost of a replacement. US brokers must refund promptly when a flight cannot happen (14 CFR 295.26). Ask before you pay whether fees are refunded too.

What should I do if my empty leg is cancelled at the last minute?

Ask the seller for a replacement aircraft first, then get full-charter quotes from more than one source. A charter broker can search many operators at once. Request your refund in writing.

Are empty-leg flights worth booking?

Yes, when your plans can flex. They sell at deep discounts on aircraft that would otherwise fly empty. For a fixed date, have a backup or book a full charter.

Where can I find empty legs?

On operators’ own websites, marketplaces like SkyAccess, and through charter brokers. Our empty-leg flights database lists every seller we could find, with what their own terms say, or ask our charter desk to search for you.
