Qantas First vs Business Suite (2026): Same A380, the US Routes, and the Points Step Up
Qantas first class and the Business Suite share the refurbished A380, and the A380 flies a short list of routes. Whether the step up is worth it depends on the aircraft on your date and on which program you hold: here is the map, the published charts and our own ledger.

The Short Answer
The refurbished A380 carries first class in front of the 1-2-1 Business Suite; the 787-9s that fly most of Qantas's US routes carry the 2014-era business seat without doors and no first class. From the US both cabins fly together on two routes in our data: Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney, with the A380 also on Singapore and a first cabin on Johannesburg. The Business Suite alone reaches 5 US airports on 9 routes in our schedule data, because the 787-9s and A330s carry the same seat with no first cabin.
The step up on the A380 is a real one. The Business Suite is a 1-2-1 with direct aisle access and no door, the same seat on every Qantas long-haul aircraft since 2014; first class on the refurbished A380 is 14 open suites with a wide bed, a 2019-era refresh and the Sydney First lounge. On a 787-9 there is no step to take: the Business Suite is the front cabin, and the desk library's note is that most of Qantas's US flying is on those aircraft.
On points: Through Qantas Frequent Flyer the step is 54,400 points (108,400 in business against 162,800 in first, one-way from Los Angeles to Sydney); Through American AAdvantage the step is 30,000 miles (80,000 in business against 110,000 in first, one-way from the US to Australia), plus Qantas's carrier charges on a Classic Reward and taxes only through AAdvantage. Of the 4 Qantas First tickets our desk issued between November 2024 and September 2026, 1 were paid fares and 3 used miles or points (3 through Cathay Asia Miles).
Key Takeaways
- Same aircraft on the A380 routes: from the US, Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney carry first class in front of the Business Suite; the 787-9s that fly most other Qantas US routes carry the Business Suite and no first class.
- Through Qantas Frequent Flyer the step is 54,400 points (108,400 in business against 162,800 in first, one-way from Los Angeles to Sydney).
- Through American AAdvantage the step is 30,000 miles (80,000 in business against 110,000 in first, one-way from the US to Australia).
- Cathay Asia Miles booked 3 of our 3 Qantas first class awards, through the oneworld partner chart; 1 of 4 Qantas first class tickets was cash.
- Project Sunrise, the Sydney to London and New York nonstops, starts in October 2027 with first class on a new aircraft; until then the A380 is the Qantas aircraft with a first cabin.
- Both cabins share the aircraft trap: the booking says business or first, the seat map says A380 or 787-9, and only the A380 has a first cabin.

When Qantas First Is Worth the Step
On the A380, when the alternative is the 2014 seat. The Business Suite is a good seat without a door, and on a 15-hour Pacific crossing the first class suite's width, its bed and the Sydney First lounge are the difference between a night's sleep and a decent one. The route has to be an A380 route, and in our data from the US that is Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney.
On points, when the chart is AAdvantage's. Qantas's own Classic Reward table prices the step from Los Angeles to Sydney at 54,400 points points plus carrier charges; AAdvantage's partner chart prices it at 30,000 miles miles with taxes only, and the oneworld partner charts, through Asia Miles, are the door our desk has used for every Qantas first class award in the window. The limit is space: Qantas releases first class to partners rarely, and the desk watches the date and books the Business Suite as the fallback.
In cash, on the dates the fares come close. Our desk sources Qantas first below the published figure on most dates, and the sourced fare against the Business Suite fare on your date decides. On a 787-9 route the choice does not arise, and on those the desk prices the Business Suite against the US carriers and Air New Zealand instead.
The Traps Are the Same for Both Cabins
The 787-9. Most of Qantas's US flying is on 787-9s with the Business Suite and no first class, per the desk library. A Qantas first class plan that is not on an A380 route is a business plan, and the seat map at booking tells you which aircraft you have.
The carrier charges on a Classic Reward. Qantas adds its own carrier charges to a Qantas Points award in both cabins, which the AAdvantage and Asia Miles charts do not; price the all-in figure before transferring points.
The one-stop that is not the A380. The Business Suite guide's New York route runs via Auckland on a 787-9, with the same business seat and no first class; a first class itinerary from the East Coast connects to the A380 at Los Angeles or Dallas/Fort Worth.
Where These Numbers Come From
Every route in these tables is checked against the schedule snapshot behind our route pages, so a route appears only if the airline flies it; distance and flight time are the same estimates those pages use. The evidence column says how we know first class is on it: "Desk library" is Biirdee's own carrier and aircraft reference, updated September 2026; "Ticketed by Biirdee" means our desk has issued first class tickets on that airline there between November 2024 and September 2026; "Award scan" means our award scanners have seen first class seats released on it; "Fare scan" means our fare scans have priced a first class fare on the nonstop. Data as of 23 September 2026.
Award prices are the programs' published charts as copied in our desk library: Qantas Frequent Flyer (June 2026); American AAdvantage (June 2026). They are the chart's one-way price per person before taxes and carrier charges, not a price our scanners saw on a date, and a range is the one our own guide on the program states where the program publishes no single figure. The desk's fare and award scans are not published.
The Business Suite network is the one our Business Suite guide derives from the schedule snapshot. Our desk issued 4 Qantas first class tickets between November 2024 and September 2026, 1 for cash and 3 on miles.
Qantas First vs Business Suite FAQs
Is the Business Suite on the same aircraft as Qantas First?
On the refurbished A380, yes: 14 first class suites in front of the Business Suite cabin, on Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney from the US in our data. The 787-9s and A330s carry the same Business Suite with no first class.
How many more miles is Qantas First than Qantas Business Suite?
Through Qantas Frequent Flyer the step is 54,400 points: 108,400 in business against 162,800 in first, one-way from Los Angeles to Sydney. Through American AAdvantage the step is 30,000 miles: 80,000 in business against 110,000 in first, one-way from the US to Australia.
Which US routes have Qantas first class?
Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney in our data, on the A380. The Business Suite flies 9 US routes from 5 airports in our schedule data, most on 787-9s with no first cabin; Project Sunrise adds first class to the London and New York nonstops from October 2027.
Is the Business Suite good enough?
It is a solid 1-2-1 with direct aisle access and the same seat on every aircraft, which is its strength, and it has no door and a 2014 design, which is its weakness against the newest cabins. On the A380 the step up to first is the one to consider; on a 787-9 the Business Suite is the only premium cabin.
Which program books Qantas First cheapest?
AAdvantage, at 110,000 miles one-way from the US with taxes only, against 162,800 points plus carrier charges through Qantas Frequent Flyer; Asia Miles, on the oneworld partner chart, booked 3 of our 3 Qantas first class awards because it saw the space.
