St. Regis vs Ritz-Carlton: Which Marriott Luxury Brand Is Better?
Marriott's two luxury flagships look alike on a booking screen and feel nothing alike in person. Here is how they differ, and which to book where.

St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton are Marriott's two classic luxury flags, they often share a city, and they price within a few hundred dollars of each other almost everywhere. They are not the same product. St. Regis is the smaller, more ceremonial brand: 68 hotels descended from John Jacob Astor IV's 1904 New York landmark, with a butler for every room and a set of rituals (a champagne sabrage at dusk, afternoon tea, the house Bloody Mary) that make a stay feel like an occasion. Ritz-Carlton is the larger, more systematic one: 127 hotels including the nine Ritz-Carlton Reserves, famous for its club floors, family resorts and a service culture engineered for consistency.
The short verdict: St. Regis for a special trip, a couple or a city you want to feel grand; Ritz-Carlton for families, longer stays and the cities and resorts St. Regis doesn't reach. Elite members have an extra reason to lean St. Regis, because Marriott's breakfast benefit applies there and not at Ritz-Carlton. The Short Answers
- St. Regis is the more exclusive and ceremonial brand (68 hotels, a butler for every room); Ritz-Carlton is bigger and more consistent (127 hotels, club floors, family resorts).
- For Marriott elites, St. Regis wins outright: Platinum members can take daily breakfast for two as their welcome gift there, while at Ritz-Carlton the gift is 1,000 points. Neither brand offers elite lounge access.
- Ritz-Carlton has the ultra-luxury tier St. Regis lacks: nine Ritz-Carlton Reserve resorts from Phulay Bay to Mandapa and Niseko.
- Rates are close in most cities (both run roughly $400–1,500 a night), and Maldives awards overlap: roughly 100,000–200,000 points at the St. Regis and 90,000–165,000 at the Ritz-Carlton.
- Families usually do better at Ritz-Carlton (kids' programs, connecting rooms, the club lounge as a dining room); couples and celebrations at St. Regis.
- Book either through Marriott's STARS advisor program and you add breakfast, a $100 credit and upgrade priority at the same rate, while still earning Bonvoy points and elite nights.

Butlers vs Club Floors
The service difference is structural. At a St. Regis every room has a butler: two garments pressed on arrival, coffee or tea brought up on request, unpacking, reservations, the small errands. It is personal and it is included, and in practice it is the brand. Ritz-Carlton's equivalent is the Club Level, a lounge with its own concierge team and five food presentations a day, which you get by booking a Club room rather than by holding status. For a family the club is worth more (breakfast, snacks and early-evening drinks for everyone); for a couple the butler is the more memorable luxury.
On style, St. Regis leans grand and a little theatrical: the King Cole Bar in New York, César Ritz's Grand Hotel lobby in Rome, the Grand Canal palazzi in Venice. Ritz-Carlton leans calm and comfortable, with some spectacular exceptions (the ICC tower in Hong Kong, the Riyadh palace, the Kerry Hill villas in the Maldives). Both brands vary more than their marketing admits, so choose the hotel, not the logo, and use our city guides to do it.
Points, Status and the Booking Channel
Both brands earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points at dynamic prices, and both give the cheapest night free on five-night award stays. The difference is elite treatment. At St. Regis, Platinum Elite members and above can take daily breakfast for themselves and a guest as their welcome gift, at city hotels and resorts alike. At Ritz-Carlton, and at the Reserves, the welcome gift is 1,000 points, elite upgrades exclude rooms with Club access, and the Reserves skip elite upgrades altogether. Neither brand offers elite lounge access. For a Bonvoy Platinum paying cash, that alone can be worth $80–150 a day at resort prices.
The equalizer is the advisor channel. Both brands sit in Marriott's STARS program: a booking through it adds daily breakfast for two, a US$100 credit per stay, an upgrade on arrival when available and a welcome amenity at the marriott.com flexible rate, and it still earns Bonvoy points and elite night credit. Booked that way, a Ritz-Carlton stay includes breakfast after all, and the choice comes down to the hotel. Every Marriott brand by tier has the full Bonvoy rules.

Which to Book, by Trip
A honeymoon or milestone: St. Regis in the city (New York, Rome, Venice, Florence) and whichever of the two has the better resort in your destination; in Bali or Thailand, look at the Reserves (Mandapa, Phulay Bay) before either. A family holiday: Ritz-Carlton, whose resorts (Naples, Laguna Niguel, Kapalua, Dubai's JBR beach) are built for it and whose Club Level feeds everyone. A points trip: St. Regis if you hold Bonvoy Platinum or better, because breakfast is included; otherwise whichever prices better in points on your dates. A long business stay: Ritz-Carlton, for the club and the consistency.
