River Cruise vs Ocean Cruise: Which Is Right for You?

The most common question our cruise desk gets from first-timers is not which line or which ship. It is which kind: river or ocean. The two share a word and a booking process and very little else. A river ship carries 130 to 190 guests, docks in the middle of a town every morning, and moves at a walking pace past castles and vineyards. An ocean ship carries anywhere from 100 to 7,000, spends days at sea, and is a destination in its own right. Neither is better; they answer different questions about how you like to travel.

The Differences That Decide It

• Pace and ports. A river ship visits a new town almost every day, often two, and docks within walking distance of the old centre. An ocean ship alternates port days with sea days and frequently docks in an industrial harbour with a transfer to town. If you want to see a lot of Europe on foot, river; if you want the ship to be part of the point, ocean.
• Ship as destination. River ships have a lounge, a restaurant or two, a sun deck and a small gym. Ocean ships range from intimate luxury vessels with a spa and three restaurants to floating resorts with water parks and Broadway shows. The bigger the ship, the more the holiday happens on board.
• Motion. Rivers do not move. If you or a companion are prone to seasickness, that settles it. Ocean cruises vary: the Mediterranean and Caribbean are usually calm, the North Atlantic and the Drake Passage are not.
• Who is on board. River cruising skews older and quieter, with most lines adults-only or near it. Ocean cruising spans every demographic depending on the line: luxury ships are calm, the big family ships are not.
• Price. River cruises look expensive per night and are not: most include excursions, wine with meals and often more, and the week is short. A luxury ocean cruise costs more in total; a mainstream ocean cruise costs far less on paper and adds up in extras.
• Weather. River seasons are spring to autumn plus Christmas markets, with the risk of high or low water forcing a reroute. Ocean cruising is year-round somewhere, with the Caribbean in winter and the Mediterranean and Alaska in summer.

Viking is the largest river operator and the safest first choice: consistent ships, calm atmosphere, one excursion a day and wine with meals. Choose a river cruise if most of these are true:

• You want to see towns and cities rather than beaches or the ship.
• You would rather walk off the gangway into the old town than take a tender and a bus.
• Seasickness is a concern for anyone in the party.
• You like a calm, adult atmosphere and a week that is over before it drags.

Choose an ocean cruise if you want the ship to be part of the holiday, you are travelling with children or a large group, you want sea days to do nothing, or your destination is somewhere rivers do not reach: the Caribbean, Alaska, the Greek islands, Antarctica.
