Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards Award Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel a Ticket Booked With Points

The Short Answer

As of September 2026, Alaska Airlines charges no fee, in cash or points, to change or cancel an Atmos Rewards award ticket and redeposit the points, at every status level. The program terms say it plainly: no service fees apply to replace, extend or exchange award tickets, or to redeposit points into the member's account. Cancel before the first flight departs and the points go back into your account and any taxes paid are refunded; change the dates and you pay only the difference in points, taken from the same account that booked the award.

Two cash fees are the exception, and both are collected at booking and never refunded: the partner award booking fee of US$20 per person, each way, for tickets booked from 1 July 2026 (US$12.50 before that), charged on every itinerary that includes a partner airline, and the contact center service charge of US$30 per person for awards booked by phone from 2 July 2026 (US$15 before), waived for Atmos Gold and Platinum members. Neither comes back when the award is cancelled.

The rule that costs people points is the deadline. Alaska's FAQ is direct: if you are unable to travel, you must notify the airline before the flight departs; if you do not, the trip is cancelled and the ticket value forfeited, the points included. Alaska Airlines Award Change and Cancellation Rules at a Glance

Every row is Alaska Airlines' own rule as published on alaskaair.com in September 2026. The fee table was updated on 10 September 2026 and is keyed to ticketing dates, not to the 2025 rename from Mileage Plan to Atmos Rewards, which did not change award pricing or fees.

How to Cancel an Alaska Airlines Award Ticket

Most Atmos Rewards award reservations can be cancelled online. Step 1: sign in and open Trips, or look up the reservation with the confirmation code and last name; the code is in the email you received after booking. Step 2: select Cancel and confirm. Step 3: the points go back into the account that booked the award and any taxes paid are refunded to the original form of payment, within seven business days for card purchases and 20 calendar days for cash; Alaska publishes no service level for the points redeposit itself, though its own blog has described it as a day or two. Alaska's email confirmation is the proof to keep.

A reservation is eligible for online changes and cancellations when it was bought directly from Alaska or Hawaiian, nobody has checked in, it is not a Saver fare (except for same-day changes), it has no more than seven guests and eight flight segments, and it carries no special service request such as a pet. Anything else goes to reservations at 1-800-252-7522, as do awards that include Cathay Pacific or LATAM, which can only be booked by phone. Group bookings use the groups desk, and a ticket bought through another agency or airline has to be cancelled with that seller.

The deadline is departure, with no grace beyond the automatic few minutes Alaska's no-show system allows for late arrivals. Cancel before the first flight leaves and everything except the non-refundable booking fees comes back; miss it and the whole reservation, onward and return flights included, is cancelled with the points and money forfeited. Alaska does not publish a rule for redepositing the unused portion of a partly flown award, so once the outbound has flown, change the return rather than trying to cancel it.

How to Change an Alaska Airlines Award Ticket

Changes are free and follow the same online path as a cash ticket: look up the reservation, choose the flight to change, select a new flight, and continue to checkout, where any difference in points or credit due is displayed before you confirm. Alaska prices awards dynamically on its own flights, so the difference is simply the gap between what you paid and what the new flight costs today; extra points must come from the same account that booked the award. Partner awards can also be changed online in most cases, and always for no fee, subject to the partner's availability.

Same-day changes are the one place a fee appears. A same-day confirmed change on a Main or First Class award costs US$75, or US$50 between Seattle and Portland or on flights entirely within one state, and is free for Atmos Gold, Platinum and Titanium members, Summit Visa Infinite primary cardholders and top-tier American AAdvantage members; on a Saver fare it costs US$115 or US$90 and is the only change permitted at all. The flight must be ticketed and operated by Alaska or Hawaiian, within North America, between the same cities, and the request must be made before the original flight departs, during online or app check-in or from the trip details.

Because a change and a cancel-and-rebook both cost nothing, the choice on Alaska is purely about price and the non-refundable fees: on a partner award, changing keeps the partner booking fee you already paid, while cancelling and rebooking pays it again. The 24-hour policy adds one free change of any kind within a day of purchase.

Saver Fares, Partner Awards, Hawaiian and Special Cases

Saver is Alaska's basic economy, and its rules are strict: no changes except a same-day confirmed change for a fee, cancellation only under the 24-hour policy or for a credit of 50% of the ticket value and all of the taxes when cancelled at least 14 days before departure, and forfeiture of the entire fare on a no-show. Alaska's fee table applies the same footnote to award tickets, and the program terms state that no changes are permitted for Saver fares in X class, but alaskaair.com publishes no rule for how the 50% credit works when the ticket was paid with points. Book Main or First awards where you can, and treat a Saver award as locked once its first day has passed.

Partner awards on oneworld carriers and Alaska's other partners are changed and cancelled online for no fee, but the operating carrier's tariff, contract of carriage and re-accommodation policies govern the trip, and disruptions are handled by the operating carrier. The partner award booking fee, charged per person and per direction, is the one cost of a change of plan: it is never refunded, and it is charged again when you rebook. Award space on partners is subject to blackout dates and capacity controls that Alaska's own flights do not have.

Hawaiian Airlines flights sit inside Atmos Rewards since HawaiianMiles merged on 1 October 2025, on a single combined award chart with the same fee rules; award pricing did not change with the launch of Atmos, and one Mileage Plan mile or HawaiianMile became one Atmos point. Points & Money awards, which discount a cash fare with points, follow the fare's own restrictions and change fees rather than the award rules, and cannot be used on Saver fares. Atmos points never expire, so there is no reinstatement rule to worry about, and the name on an award must match the passenger's identification exactly, so a booking in the wrong name is a cancellation and a new booking.

Taxes, Fees and Refund Timing

Award travel is subject to taxes and fees collected at ticketing: on a domestic itinerary generally just the US$5.60 September 11 security fee per one-way, and considerably more on international routes. On a cancelled award those taxes are refunded to the original form of payment, which Alaska's refund commitment puts at seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for cash, with a further one to two weeks for the card issuer to post it.

The partner award booking fee and the contact center service charge are the two amounts that never return: Alaska states both as non-refundable even when the award is cancelled. Neither is large, but on a family of four flying a partner award round-trip the partner fee alone is US$160 that a change of plan writes off, so we book partner awards only once dates are firm.

Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rule

Alaska's 24-hour policy allows any ticket to be cancelled for a full refund, or changed once without change fees, within 24 hours of purchase, as long as the travel starts more than 24 hours after the time of purchase; a ticket bought inside a day of departure is under the standard policy from the moment it is ticketed. Refunds under the policy take up to seven business days.

After that the only deadline is departure. Alaska's no-show policy cancels the entire reservation, including continuing and return flights, when the first flight is not cancelled before its departure, and the money and points spent are not available as credit; the same rule applies in the program terms, which say the no-show policy is applied "in accordance with normal rules". Weather and event waivers, when Alaska publishes them, let award tickets be changed or cancelled without penalty with the points deposited back.

When Alaska or a partner cancels or significantly changes the flight, the fee position does not matter: for US itineraries the Department of Transportation refund rule entitles you to a refund of the points and taxes if you choose not to travel, and Alaska will otherwise rebook you.
