American Airlines AAdvantage Award Ticket Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel a Flight Booked With Miles

The Short Answer

As of September 2026, American Airlines charges no fee to cancel an AAdvantage award ticket and reinstate the miles, and no change fee to move an award to new dates or a new routing. Its Customer Service Plan puts it in three sentences: award tickets can be cancelled anytime on aa.com, American will reinstate the miles and refund eligible taxes and fees up to one year after the ticket issue date, and there is no fee to reinstate the miles, provided you cancel before the first flight departs. Cancel online and the miles and the refund are requested automatically in most cases, with up to 72 hours for the miles to post.

A change works as a cancel-and-rebook under the hood: American reinstates the miles from the original trip to the AAdvantage account that paid, deducts the miles for the new trip from the same account even when the amount is identical, collects any difference in taxes, and refunds any amount owed to the card used for the original booking. There is no change fee, but a change is a repricing at today's level. The Terms and Conditions reserve the right to charge additional miles or fees per ticket for post-ticketing changes; the consumer pages describe current practice, which is none.

Two conditions frame every refund: only wholly unused awards are reinstated, so a partially flown award returns nothing, and an expired ticket cannot be reinstated, so the request has to fall inside the one-year validity. This page sets out the rules, the how-to, the Basic Economy, partner and same-day cases, and the pages on aa.com that state each rule. For the program itself see our American Airlines AAdvantage guide; for every major program side by side see award ticket cancellation fees compared.

Key Takeaways

  • Cancel before the first flight departs and within one year of ticketing: no fee, miles reinstated (allow up to 72 hours) and eligible taxes and fees refunded to the original card, at every status level.
  • No change fee on award tickets; a change reprices the award, with the miles reinstated and re-deducted from the original account and any tax difference paid or refunded.
  • Only wholly unused awards are reinstated: a partially used award returns nothing, an expired ticket cannot be reinstated, and the consumer pages give no explicit no-show rule beyond "cancel before your first flight departs".
  • Awards that include partner airlines, trips that have already started, and tickets changed after an uncontrollable event must be cancelled through Reservations (800-882-8880) rather than online.
  • Within 24 hours of buying a ticket at least seven days before departure, American refunds any ticket type in full; the award rules simply continue that flexibility until departure.

American Airlines Award Change and Cancellation Rules at a Glance

Every row is American's own rule as published on aa.com in September 2026. The AAdvantage Terms and Conditions in force are effective 1 March 2026; American publishes no tier-based difference for award reinstatement or changes.

How to Cancel an American Airlines Award Ticket

Step 1: find the trip on aa.com or in the American app with the six-character confirmation code, or sign in to the AAdvantage account that holds the booking. Step 2: choose "Cancel trip" from the menu and confirm when prompted. Step 3: check your email for the cancellation information. When you cancel on aa.com, American reinstates the miles and requests the refund of eligible taxes and fees automatically in most cases; the miles take up to 72 hours to post, and the card refund follows American's refund schedule of seven business days for credit card purchases, which can take one to two billing cycles to appear.

Three kinds of award cannot be reinstated online and go to Reservations at 800-882-8880, the AAdvantage award travel line: a trip that has already started, a trip that involves travel on partner airlines, and a ticket that was changed after an uncontrollable event since it was issued. American's refund page and the customer service plan add that if you cannot cancel online, Reservations will help and the refund is processed automatically.

The two deadlines are departure and expiry. Miles are reinstated for wholly unused awards cancelled before departure, so a no-show is not covered by anything on aa.com; the consumer pages tell you to cancel before the first flight departs and the Terms and Conditions state that partially used awards are not reinstated, so treat a missed first flight as forfeiting the award. And because expired tickets cannot be reinstated, the cancellation has to be requested within one year of the ticket issue date.

How to Change an American Airlines Award Ticket

Changes to an eligible award run online: find the trip, choose "Change trip" in the toolbar, pick the new flights, review and confirm, and wait for the email with the new ticket number. You can change the departure or arrival airport, the dates, or both, and travel must still be completed within one year of the original ticket date. Because American prices its own awards dynamically and keeps semi-fixed partner charts, the "difference" is the gap between what you paid and what the new itinerary costs today, which can move in either direction.

American describes the mechanics precisely: it reinstates the miles to the original AAdvantage account, deducts the miles for the new itinerary from that same account even when the amount is the same, collects any tax difference, and refunds any amount you are owed to the card from the original booking. That makes "change" and "cancel and rebook" the same transaction on American, which is convenient: the only reason to prefer one over the other is that a change keeps the booking under one confirmation code and preserves any award hold or partner space you would otherwise have to find again.

Same-day changes are the exception to "no fee". A same-day confirmed change starts at $60 on American flights within the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, but on award tickets it is complimentary only for First and Business awards and for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members (with up to eight companions) in Main Cabin; other members holding a Main Cabin award cannot make a confirmed same-day change, though same-day standby is available to everyone. Requests open 24 hours before departure through your trips online or in the app.

Basic Economy, Partner Awards, Holds and Special Cases

American publishes no Basic Economy rule for awards paid in miles. Its Basic Economy page covers cash fares: they cannot be changed after the 24-hour window, and AAdvantage members can cancel one for a fee ($99 within the contiguous 48 states, $129 for Hawaii, Alaska and short-haul international, $199 for long-haul international) in exchange for travel credit, on trips booked in the US directly with American and cancelled before the first flight departs. The award pages state the no-fee reinstatement rule with no fare-class carve-out, so a Basic Economy award should still be checked in the booking flow before you rely on cancelling it free.

Partner awards on British Airways, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and the other oneworld and AAdvantage partners follow the same reinstatement rule, but they cannot be cancelled online: Reservations handles any award that involves partner travel. The carrier-imposed charges some partners add, British Airways and Iberia in particular, are refundable when you cancel, and every award carries taxes and carrier-imposed fees from $5.60 per person per award, refunded in full except for sale-imposed non-refundable taxes and taxes American must pay whether or not you travel. Partner awards may also have shorter hold times than American's own.

Holds are the free way to keep flexibility before you commit: an award booked seven to 331 days before departure can be held for one day, and everything can be changed or cancelled without charge before ticketing. After ticketing, the name on an award is fixed, awards are non-transferable, and a booking for the wrong person is a cancellation and a new booking. Miles that expired for lack of activity can be reactivated for $60 to $2,000 within 24 months of expiring, up to 500,000 miles, but a reactivation is non-refundable, so check the balance before you count on it for a rebooking.

Taxes, Fees and Refund Timing

Every award carries taxes and carrier-imposed fees from $5.60 per person per award on a domestic one-way, and considerably more on international routes, particularly on partners that add their own charges. When you cancel a wholly unused award, American refunds all taxes and fees in full except sale-imposed non-refundable taxes, taxes it must pay whether or not you travel, and anything on a trip that has already started; the partner carrier charges are refundable in the same way. Refunds go to the original form of payment, within seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 business days for cash or cheque, and refund requests must be made while the ticket is valid, within one year of issue.

Trip Credit is not part of the award picture: American's travel credit page limits Trip Credit to non-award trips and says it cannot be used for the taxes and fees on award travel, so a cancelled award returns miles and cash rather than a credit. The one cash amount that does not come back is the co-payment on a mileage upgrade award, which American states is non-refundable even when the miles are reinstated.

Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rule

American's 24-hour refund policy covers any ticket bought on aa.com or through Reservations at least seven days before departure: you have 24 hours from the time you first buy the ticket to cancel and request a refund, it applies to all ticket types, and refunds are issued in full less sale-imposed non-refundable taxes and any service charge for booking through Reservations. Group blocks are excluded. For awards the policy adds little, since the no-fee reinstatement runs until departure anyway, but it matters for the mileage upgrade co-payment, which is refundable only inside that window.

After the first day, the operative deadlines are the first flight's departure and the ticket's one-year validity. American's pages never state a no-show rule for awards in so many words; what they say is that miles are reinstated for wholly unused awards cancelled before departure, that partially used awards are not reinstated, and, for tickets generally, that a ticket not cancelled before the first flight departs loses its remaining value. Cancel before departure, even minutes before, and the miles and taxes come back; miss the flight and assume they do not.

When American or a partner cancels or significantly changes the flight, none of this applies: under the US Department of Transportation refund rule you are owed a refund to the original form of payment, miles included, if you choose not to travel, and American will otherwise rebook you. Our award cancellation fees guide covers those involuntary-change rules across every program.

How Biirdee Makes AAdvantage Changes and Cancellations Seamless

When Biirdee books an AAdvantage award with your miles, the exit rules are part of the booking: we tell you before ticketing that a cancellation before departure is free, whether the itinerary includes a partner that will need Reservations, and where the one-year validity falls. After that, a change or cancellation is one WhatsApp message: your concierge makes the change on aa.com or through Reservations, confirms the miles have posted back to your account, and follows the tax refund through to your card. You never hold for the award desk.

When plans move rather than die, we price the options side by side: reprice the award to the new dates, cancel and rebook a cheaper partner award, or drop the award for one of our negotiated business-class fares, which on volatile itineraries can cost less all-in than the extra miles a dynamic repricing would eat and earns miles and Loyalty Points where the award earns nothing. You approve; we execute. Start a free flight quote and mention the confirmation code.

AAdvantage Award Cancellation FAQs

Does American Airlines charge a fee to cancel an award ticket?

No. American reinstates the miles and refunds eligible taxes and fees at no charge, at every status level, as long as you cancel before the first flight departs and within one year of the ticket issue date. Cancel on aa.com and the reinstatement and refund are requested automatically in most cases; allow up to 72 hours for the miles to post.

How do I cancel an American Airlines flight booked with miles?

Find the trip on aa.com or in the American app with the confirmation code, or sign in to your AAdvantage account, choose "Cancel trip" and confirm. Awards that include a partner airline, trips that have already started and tickets changed after an uncontrollable event have to be cancelled through Reservations at 800-882-8880.

Is there a fee to change an American Airlines award ticket?

No change fee. American reinstates the miles from the original trip and deducts the miles for the new one from the same account, so you pay or receive the difference at today's award price, plus any difference in taxes, refunded to the original card if it is in your favor. Same-day confirmed changes are free only on First and Business awards and for Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members.

What happens if I miss an American Airlines award flight?

American's pages do not state an award no-show rule directly, but the Terms and Conditions reinstate miles only for wholly unused awards cancelled before departure and say partially used awards are not reinstated, and the customer service pages say a ticket not cancelled before the first flight departs loses its value. Cancel before departure, even minutes before, and the miles and taxes come back.

Can I get miles back on a partially flown American award?

No. The AAdvantage Terms and Conditions state that partially used awards will not be reinstated, and the taxes are not refunded once the trip has started. Change the return leg to a date you will use rather than abandoning it.

Do I get the taxes back when I cancel an American award?

Yes, in full, except for sale-imposed non-refundable taxes, taxes American must pay whether or not you travel, and anything on a trip that has already started. Partner carrier charges, such as those British Airways and Iberia add, are refundable when you cancel. Card refunds are processed within seven business days.

Can I cancel a Basic Economy award ticket on American?

American's award pages state the no-fee reinstatement rule with no Basic Economy exception, but the Basic Economy page covers cash fares only, which cancel for a $99 to $199 fee into travel credit. aa.com publishes no rule specific to Basic Economy awards paid in miles, so check the conditions shown in the booking flow before relying on a free cancellation.

Can Biirdee cancel or change my American award for me?

Yes. For awards our desk books with your AAdvantage miles, changes and cancellations are handled end to end by your concierge over WhatsApp, including the partner-award call to Reservations, the reinstatement and the tax refund. If you booked the award yourself, send us the details and we will say which rule applies and whether repricing, cancelling and rebooking, or switching to one of our negotiated cash fares is the cheapest move.
