Cathay Pacific Asia Miles Award Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel or Change a Flight Award

The Short Answer

As of September 2026, Cathay Pacific charges US$120 or 17,000 Asia Miles to cancel a completely unused flight award and re-credit the miles, and US$50 or 7,500 Asia Miles to change it, whether the change is a new date or flight number on the same itinerary or a change of routing, cabin or award type on the same airline. Both fees are charged per ticket, per occurrence, and are the same online and through Customer Care, but any change made through Customer Care, live chat or another non-self-service channel adds a booking and ticketing service fee of US$40 or 6,000 Asia Miles per booking. Cathay publishes no discount for Silver, Gold or Diamond members on any of these fees.

The two deadlines are different and easy to confuse. A change must be requested before the original departure date and within the ticket's validity; a cancellation must be requested before the ticket's expiry date, which is twelve months from issue. A partially used award can never be refunded, and on a cancelled award Cathay refunds the airport taxes and fuel surcharges to the original credit card along with the miles. Cathay's member-exclusive 24-hour free cancellation explicitly excludes Asia Miles flight award bookings, so the fee applies from the moment the award is ticketed.

Standard awards on Cathay Pacific flights can be changed and cancelled in Manage Booking; anything on a partner airline, with more than two stopovers, on an open-jaw or mixed-carrier itinerary, or booked as an upgrade or companion award, goes through Customer Care. Cathay Pacific Flight Award Change and Cancellation Fees at a Glance

Every row is Cathay Pacific's own rule as published on cathaypacific.com in September 2026. Fees are quoted in US dollars or Asia Miles (Cathay publishes no Hong Kong dollar figure for award fees), and "other channels" means Customer Care, live chat and any non-online self-service channel.

How to Cancel a Cathay Pacific Flight Award

Step 1: sign in to cathaypacific.com and open the booking in Manage Booking; Cathay says the fastest way to cancel or organize a refund for a booking made on its website, app or through Customer Care is to log into Manage Booking. Step 2: use the "Cancel or change your flight" button, which appears once the system has verified the booking is eligible, and submit the refund request for the completely unused award; the US$120 or 17,000-mile fee is applied. Step 3: the Asia Miles used to claim the award are credited back to your account, and the airport taxes and fuel surcharges go back to the original credit card. Cathay says a refund normally takes up to seven calendar days to process, longer if the booking includes interline flights or the card has expired, and you can check the status in Manage Booking for 90 days.

You cannot partially cancel a booking online: to cancel for only some passengers, contact Customer Care, or cancel the whole booking and rebook the rest. A companion ticket whose paid ticket has been cancelled also has to be cancelled through Customer Care. Refunded miles go back to the account they were redeemed from, and a refund does not count as an eligible transaction for the 18-month expiry rule, so an inactive account still needs a real earning or redemption afterwards.

The cancellation deadline is the ticket expiry date, twelve months from issue, rather than the departure date, and Cathay publishes no separate no-show rule for awards. What it does say is that a refund requires a totally unused ticket, that a change must be submitted before the original flight date, and that coupons flown out of sequence forfeit the rest. The safe practice is the same as everywhere else: cancel before the first flight departs.

How to Change a Cathay Pacific Flight Award

Standard awards on Cathay Pacific flights can be changed online for US$50 or 7,500 Asia Miles per ticket, per passenger, if six conditions hold: the ticket has a confirmed flight, the operating airline does not change, the origin and destination airports stay the same, the new date is within the ticket's validity, the request is submitted before the original flight date, and a redemption seat is available. In Manage Booking, select "Change or cancel your flight", choose the new date and flight, and pay the fee; if you have already checked in, cancel the check-in first. Every passenger on the booking changes together unless you split the booking, which the site allows by selecting only the passengers whose tickets you want to alter.

Changes of routing, cabin class or award type on the same airline carry the same fee and may need additional Asia Miles if the new journey falls into a higher distance zone; the reissued ticket keeps the original expiry date and must be for the same person. Those changes are not permitted on a partially used ticket, and itineraries with more than two stopovers, open-jaw tickets, mixed-carrier awards, upgrade awards and companion awards must be changed through Customer Care, which adds the US$40 or 6,000-mile booking and ticketing service fee on top of the change fee.

The arithmetic makes the cancel-or-change decision clear. A change costs US$50 or 7,500 miles; a cancellation costs US$120 or 17,000 miles and then a fresh booking at today's award price. Change when the seat exists on the new date, cancel and rebook only when the itinerary itself has to change in a way the rules do not allow or when a cheaper award level is worth more than the difference in fees. Paying in miles is worth considering when your balance is large and your cash would otherwise be spent on the ticket; at Cathay's implied rate the mile price is the more expensive option for most members.

Partner Awards, Miles Plus Cash and Special Cases

Awards on partner airlines can be booked online for most oneworld carriers (American, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Finnair, Iberia and others), but Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian, Bangkok Airways, Lufthansa, Shenzhen Airlines and SWISS, and any itinerary with more than six sectors, are booked through Customer Care. Changes to any partner-airline flight go through Customer Care as well, the use of the award is subject to the operating airline's conditions of carriage, and Cathay's fee page does not say whether the US$40 service fee applies to partner changes. The US$120 cancellation fee is the only figure published for cancelling a partner award; oneworld multi-carrier awards have no separate fee row.

Miles Plus Cash bookings are cash fares with miles applied, so they follow the fare's rules rather than the award rules: they can be changed in Manage Booking or through Customer Care, the 24-hour free cancellation does apply to them, and on a cancellation any fee is deducted from the cash first and then from the miles, with the remaining value refunded in miles and cash in proportion. Companion tickets and upgrade awards can be cancelled with the miles refunded, subject to the cancellation fee.

Two administrative rules shape a change of plan. Award tickets are non-transferable, so a booking for the wrong person cannot be reassigned, though Cathay corrects spelling, middle-name and title errors free of charge with a copy of the travel document; a full name change needs a legal reason. And open-dated award tickets are not permitted, so a trip without a firm return still has to be booked with a confirmed date and changed later for the fee.

Taxes, Surcharges and Refund Timing

Asia Miles award prices exclude fuel surcharges and taxes, which the passenger pays at ticketing along with airport and government fees; on Cathay's own long-haul flights the fuel surcharge is a meaningful part of the cash cost. Cathay's cancellation rule is generous on this point: on a cancelled, unused award the airport taxes and fuel surcharges are refunded to the original payment card, and taxes can also be refunded on the unused portion of a partially used ticket even though the miles cannot.

Refund requests normally take up to seven calendar days to process, longer for interline itineraries, expired cards or weather-disrupted travel, and Manage Booking shows the refund status for 90 days. Cathay does not publish a timeline for the miles re-credit itself. Refunded miles return to the account they came from, and because a reversal is not an eligible transaction for the 18-month activity rule, check the account's expiry position after a large redeposit.

Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rule

Cathay's 24-hour free cancellation service, updated 8 September 2026, is available to members on bookings paid with cash or Miles Plus Cash made at least eight days before departure, and it explicitly excludes Asia Miles flight award bookings. The only 24-hour protection an award holder has is the statutory one: Cathay says it will refund within 24 hours of booking where US law requires it, on tickets booked at least seven days before departure, for example a booking made on the US website or an itinerary whose first flight departs the US.

After that, two clocks run. Changes must be requested before the original flight date and within the twelve-month validity; cancellations must be requested before the ticket expiry date on a totally unused ticket. Cathay does not say what happens to an award whose passenger simply never shows up, beyond the coupon-sequence rule and the requirement that a refundable award be unused, so treat departure as the practical deadline. Once travel begins, only date and flight-number changes remain possible and the miles are gone for good.

When Cathay cancels or significantly changes the flight, the fee schedule does not apply: for US itineraries the Department of Transportation refund rule entitles you to a refund of the miles and taxes if you choose not to travel, and for flights departing the UK or EU the passenger-rights regulations expressly cover tickets issued under a frequent flyer program.
