ANA Fuel Surcharges on Award Tickets (2026): Current Amounts by Route, and How to Budget for Them
An ANA award is never just miles. The fuel surcharge on each flight changes every two months, and in 2026 it has run from a few dozen dollars to almost $500 a flight. Current numbers, from ANA's own table.

The Short Answer
Yes, ANA charges fuel surcharges on award tickets. ANA Mileage Club's award rules list the fuel surcharge among the taxes and fees you pay in cash on top of the miles, by card, when the ticket is issued. On tickets issued in September and October 2026, a trip that starts outside Japan pays $352 per flight between Japan and North America or Europe, and $223 between Japan and Hawaii. A trip that starts in Japan pays in yen: ¥55,000 and ¥35,800.
So a round-trip ANA award between the US and Tokyo carries about $704 in fuel surcharges, plus taxes, whatever the cabin: the surcharge is set by route, not by seat. On a low-season business class round trip of 100,000 miles, that is the largest cash cost of the trip.
Key Takeaways
- $352 per flight between Japan and North America or Europe on tickets issued in September and October 2026 (trips starting outside Japan); $223 to Hawaii.
- The amount depends on the date the ticket is issued, not the date you fly, and ANA resets it every two months.
- In 2026 the North America and Europe band has moved from $386 (May to June) to $485 (July to August) and back to $352.
- It is the same in every cabin, so it weighs most on economy awards.
- ANA announces each band in the second half of the month before it starts, which gives a window to ticket before a rise.

How ANA Sets the Surcharge
ANA ties the surcharge to the Singapore kerosene market price, averaged over two months before each application period; for trips starting in Japan it also applies the average exchange rate for those months. ANA has moved the reference window closer to the application period, from the average of four to three months before to three to two months before, so the surcharge now follows fuel prices more quickly. If the two-month average of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel falls below ¥6,000, ANA abolishes the surcharge for trips starting in Japan.
Each band covers two months of ticketing (May to June, July to August, and so on) and ANA announces it in the second half of the month before. In 2026 ANA also reduced its Japan-origin surcharges for tickets bought from May through October, following Japanese government measures on fuel costs linked to the situation in the Middle East.
Alongside the fuel surcharge, ANA's page lists an insurance surcharge on international tickets bought outside Japan of US$7.80 per passenger per segment.
How to Budget, and When It Pays to Act
Ticket before a rise. The surcharge is fixed by the issue date, so once ANA announces a higher band for the next two months, an award ticketed before the change keeps the current amount. When a cut is announced, waiting for the new band saves the difference, as long as the seat is still there.
Changes can reprice it. ANA warns that changing an unused award ticket can produce differences in fuel surcharges and taxes, which it notifies at the time of the change. A free date change can therefore still cost cash if the band has gone up since you booked.
Weigh it by cabin. Because the surcharge is the same in every cabin, it is a small share of a first class award and a large share of an economy one. A one-way economy award from the US to Japan at 20,000 miles in low season pays the same surcharge as a first class award at 75,000.
Compare programs, cash included. Virgin Atlantic's ANA prices also exclude taxes and surcharges, so the same surcharge question applies there. On ANA's partner flights the operating airline's own surcharges apply instead of ANA's. Against all of them sits the cash fare, which already includes everything; when a discounted business class fare is low, paying cash and keeping the miles can beat any award once the surcharge is counted.
How Biirdee Handles the Cash Side
Every ANA award we quote is priced all-in: miles, surcharge and taxes, set against the same seat through Virgin Atlantic (52,500 points one-way in business from the West Coast) and against a discounted cash fare through our contracts. We ticket before announced rises when the seat is right and wait out announced cuts when it is safe to. Send your trip in a free flight quote; our ANA Mileage Club guide covers the program, including a cents-per-mile comparison against our own fare scans.
