ANA The Suite vs JAL First Class (2026): Routes, Seats, Miles and Which to Book From Your City
Japan's two first classes rarely compete for the same traveler: they fly from different US cities, sit behind different bank points, and run on different aircraft. Here is how to tell which one is yours.

The Short Answer
Start with your city. From New York JFK, both fly first class to Tokyo Haneda. From Chicago and San Francisco, it is ANA's The Suite, on routes that alternate aircraft (JAL's San Francisco first class is on an aircraft it is retiring). From Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles, it is JAL's A350-1000. Outside New York, the two airlines' first class cities barely overlap, so the city settles most of the decision.
Then look at your points. ANA's The Suite books through ANA Mileage Club (75,000 miles one-way in low season, plus about $370 in fuel surcharge per sector) or Virgin Atlantic (72,500 to 85,000 points), and every major US bank reaches Virgin. JAL First books through AAdvantage (from 80,000 on a nonstop) or Atmos Rewards (from 80,000), fed only by Citi and Bilt respectively.
On hardware, JAL's A350-1000 is the newer aircraft, with six first class suites and 54 business seats with doors, per the desk library. ANA's The Suite flies on about 10 of its 13 777-300ERs, with The Room, ANA's business class, behind it.

Which One Is Yours
By city. From Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles, JAL's A350-1000 is the Japanese first class in our data. From Chicago and San Francisco, it is ANA's The Suite, on flights that alternate aircraft, so check the seat map. From New York JFK, choose on points and dates: both fly to Haneda. By points. Amex Membership Rewards is the only US bank currency that transfers to ANA, and it takes one to three days with no hold on the seat. Virgin Atlantic takes every major bank currency, usually instantly, and prices ANA first from a fixed chart, but books it by phone after you have verified the space. For JAL, Citi ThankYou is the only bank path into AAdvantage, whose free 24-hour hold and free redeposit before departure make it the more forgiving program, and Bilt is the only path into Atmos Rewards, which holds nothing. Bilt and Capital One also transfer to JAL Mileage Bank, JAL's own program, whose award prices are not in our desk references.
By traveler. ANA Mileage Club awards are for the member and relatives within two degrees of kinship only; booking a friend is not allowed. Virgin Atlantic, AAdvantage and Atmos Rewards have no such rule.
By timing. The desk library warns that ANA premium awards reportedly become unbookable through Virgin inside about 14 days of departure, and that low award bands on AAdvantage and Atmos Rewards are scarce. Set alerts early for either airline.
On the Ground in Tokyo
Haneda is the right default for both airlines: 14 km from central Tokyo against about 60 for Narita, with the stronger flagship lounges, including JAL's sushi bar and teppanyaki. ANA's one Haneda trap is its terminal split: international flights use both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, the terminal is fixed only about two days out, and a Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 connection means a shuttle bus and re-clearing security.
