Every room, photo and amenity at Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel

Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, has one of the two best recent guest scores in Belmond's portfolio. Its 100 most recent verified reviews average 9.90 out of 10, with 98% scoring 9 or more and 1% under 7: second of the 15 Belmonds we could rank, a hundredth of a point behind Monasterio in Cusco (9.91), and first of the three Cape Town hotels we score. Forbes Travel Guide rates it Five-Star in 2026, and it returned to The 50 Best Hotels in 2026 at No. 34, up from No. 73 in 2025.

The review window is short and recent: all 100 reviews were written in July and August 2026. The long-run score on our booking platform agrees with it, though: 9.7 over 933 reviews. Families wrote 47% of the recent reviews and groups 21%, far more than across Belmond as a whole (23% and 9%), and service came up in 61% of written reviews, averaging 9.83.

On price it undercuts its Cape Town rivals more often than not. Our November and July test stays came to $1,030 and $1,066 a night, the lowest of the three hotels we priced, with breakfast included and free cancellation; in March One&Only Cape Town was marginally cheaper ($1,507 against $1,515), and The Silo Hotel cost more on every stay we could price.

Our verdict: if you are choosing a Cape Town hotel on guest scores, this is the one, and it is our pick of the three. Go in November or between May and August, when our midweek calendar ran $959–1,137 a night; December to April cost $1,491–1,792.

Mount Nelson by Our Numbers

On 1 October 2026 we priced Mount Nelson through our own booking engine (the one behind hotels.biirdee.com) on four test stays for two adults (10–13 Nov 2026, 27–30 Dec 2026, 12–15 Mar 2027 and 15–18 Jul 2027) and on a two-night midweek stay (Tuesday to Thursday of the third week) in every month from November 2026 to October 2027, and we scored its 100 most recent verified guest reviews ourselves: the mean out of 10, the share scoring 9 or more and the share under 7. One&Only Cape Town and The Silo Hotel were priced and scored the same way on 3 October 2026. Rates are the lowest per night the engine charged at booking that day; taxes the hotel collects at checkout are extra, and live rates change daily. "No rooms" means nothing was bookable on our engine for those dates.

From December to April the rate sat between $1,491 and $1,792, and it climbed again in September ($1,397) and October ($1,790). From the cheapest month to the dearest the rate rose 87%. Our New Year test stay (27–30 Dec 2026) found no rooms on our engine at all, and the December midweek stay was the year's priciest, so book the holidays early.

Every rate we found at Mount Nelson already included breakfast and allowed free cancellation, so the cheapest rate is the one to book. Taxes the hotel collects at checkout added about $146–214 a night on our three priced stays; add them when you budget.

Rooms, Dining and Spa

Mount Nelson opened in 1899 in Cape Town's Gardens district and was painted pink "for peace" in 1918; it still is. It has 196 rooms and suites (110 rooms and 86 suites, three of them signature suites) in nine acres of gardens, with two outdoor pools, tennis courts, a kids' club and the Librisa Spa. The kids' club fits the guest mix: families wrote 47% of recent reviews. New in 2026 are the Thebe Magugu Suite and Magugu House, created with the South African designer.

On our dates the engine offered 6–12 room types. The cheapest room was a Superior Room in November and March and a Deluxe Room in July; the cheapest suite was a Junior Suite at $1,345–1,674 a night, and the top category ran $3,079–4,808.

Its seven restaurants and bars include the Planet Bar, The Red Room by Chefs Warehouse, The Verandah, Oasis and The Fountain, and the afternoon tea is famous. The newest is Amura by Ángel León, the Spanish "Chef of the Sea", which opened in December 2025 as his first restaurant outside Spain and was named to TIME's World's Greatest Places 2026 list. South Africa has no MICHELIN restaurant guide, so there are no stars to count. Food came up in 24% of written reviews, averaging 9.57.

Our Read on the Comparison

Mount Nelson leads Cape Town on guest scores and on Forbes: 9.90 against The Silo Hotel's 9.43 (on an older review window, December 2022 to July 2026) and One&Only Cape Town's 9.07, and it is the only Forbes Five-Star of the three. None of the three had rooms on our engine for 27–30 December 2026.

One&Only Cape Town is the closer rival on price. On our monthly calendar each was cheaper in six months: Mount Nelson in November, December and from May to August, One&Only from January to April and in September and October. The widest gaps favored Mount Nelson, in November ($959 against $1,895) and December ($1,792 against $2,201). One&Only's cheapest rate also included breakfast on all three stays we could price. The Silo Hotel was the most expensive of the three on every stay we could price, from $1,889 a night in July to $2,649 in November.

Our desk has no Belmond or One&Only bookings in the period our notes cover, so the first-party data here is our rate checks and review scoring. For the rest of the brand, see the best Belmond hotels and Belmond prices.
