Between Nice and Monaco the coast rears up into cliffs, and three roads — the Basse, Moyenne and Grande Corniche — thread along them at different altitudes. Tucked into that twenty-kilometre stretch are Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Villefranche, Èze and Roquebrune, and between them the highest concentration of grand hotels on the French Riviera.
This is villa country. Cap Ferrat alone holds the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and a peninsula of estates behind gates; Beaulieu has the Villa Kérylos, a full-scale recreation of an ancient Greek house on the water. The hotels here inherited the same instinct — gardens, seawater pools, long lunches, and very little interest in a nightclub.

How to Choose
Sea level or cliff top is the real question. At sea level, the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat and Cap-Estel put you on the water with the swimming built in — the Club Dauphin funicular is worth the stay by itself. On the corniche above, the Maybourne and the Chèvre d'Or trade the swim for a view that genuinely stops conversation, and both are five to fifteen minutes from Monaco.
For value, the Royal-Riviera and La Réserve de Beaulieu are the coast's most underrated pair: proper Belle Époque waterfront hotels with beaches and starred kitchens, at roughly half the cape's headline rates, and both open far longer in the year. And unlike much of the Riviera, this stretch does not shut down — if you want the coast in March or November, this is where to come. Nice is fifteen minutes west if you want a city evening.

What is the best hotel on Cap Ferrat?
The Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, without much argument — the gardens, the Club Dauphin seawater pool and the service depth put it at the top of the coast. The Royal-Riviera is the value alternative on the same peninsula at roughly a quarter of the rate.
Where should I stay to visit Monaco?
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin or Èze put you five to fifteen minutes from the principality with far better hotels and views than staying inside it. The Maybourne Riviera looks directly down on Monaco; Cap-Estel and the Chèvre d'Or are similarly close. During Grand Prix week, book a year ahead wherever you choose.
Do these hotels close for winter?
Less than the rest of the Riviera. The Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat and the Maybourne Riviera typically run March to mid-November, and the Royal-Riviera stays open close to year-round — which makes this the stretch to book for shoulder-season and winter trips.
How do you get around the corniches?
A car helps, though the coastal train serves Villefranche, Beaulieu, Èze-sur-Mer and Monaco and is genuinely scenic. Note that Èze village sits 400 metres above Èze-sur-Mer station — a steep bus or taxi ride, not a walk with luggage.
