How to Do Crete Properly
Elounda earns its reputation (calm water, Spinalonga's fortress island across the bay, and a concentration of serious hotels nowhere else in Greece matches), and Agios Nikolaos extends it: Daios Cove for drama, St. Nicolas Bay for a sandy beach and gardens, Minos Beach for art and a walkable town. But Crete's scale is the real luxury: the island out-sizes some countries, and the west (Chania's Venetian harbour, Balos and Elafonissi's lagoons, the White Mountains) is a different trip entirely, with Domes Noruz the smartest beach base there.
