British Airways First vs Club Suite (2026): Same Aircraft, the Routes, and the Miles Step Up
On BA's long-haul aircraft with a first cabin, Club Suite is the business class behind it. Whether the step up is worth it depends on which aircraft you get and which program pays the surcharges: here is the math from the published charts and our own ledger.

The Short Answer
The A380s carry the old first class and the old Club World until each aircraft's retrofit, which brings a new 12-suite First and Club Suite together from late 2026; the 777s and A350s that carry a first cabin fly Club Suite behind it. So from the US both cabins fly together on eleven routes in our data: Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, New York JFK, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle, all to London Heathrow. Club Suite alone reaches 27 US airports on 28 routes in our schedule data, because the 787-8s and 787-10s and some 777s carry it with no first cabin.
The step up is smaller than on most airlines, and the reason is the retrofit. On an A380 that has not been refitted, BA First is the old first class and Club World behind it is the old 2-4-2 cabin, so first is a big step. On a 777 or A350 with Club Suite, business is already a 1-2-1 with a door, and the first class ahead of it is the older product until the new 12-suite First arrives with the A380 refit from late 2026.
On miles the two cabins price off the same partner charts and carry the same BA surcharges, which are the real cost: Through American AAdvantage the step is 27,500 miles (57,500 in business against 85,000 in first, one-way from the US to London), before carrier charges of hundreds of dollars each way in every program. Of the 33 British Airways First tickets our desk issued between November 2024 and September 2026, 21 were paid fares and 12 used miles or points (8 through Cathay Asia Miles, 4 through British Airways Avios).
Key Takeaways
- Same aircraft on the first class routes: from the US, Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, New York JFK, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle to Heathrow carry a first cabin with Club Suite or the old Club World behind it; the A380 routes are Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco.
- Through American AAdvantage the step is 27,500 miles (57,500 in business against 85,000 in first, one-way from the US to London), before BA's carrier surcharges.
- The surcharges, not the miles, decide the program: about $300 to $700 or more one-way through AAdvantage in premium transatlantic cabins, over $1,000 through Atmos Rewards, and up to $1,800 or more through Asia Miles, per the desk library.
- Cathay Asia Miles booked 8 of our 12 BA First awards and Avios 4; 21 of 33 BA First tickets were cash.
- The seat map tells you which aircraft you have: business entirely on the upper deck of an A380 in a 1-2-1 means the refit; 2-4-2 means the old cabins in both classes.

When BA First Is Worth the Step
On an un-refitted A380, when the alternative is the old Club World: 2-4-2 with window passengers climbing over a neighbour is the cabin BA First is most worth escaping, and the A380 routes from the US (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth and Boston in the desk library) are where that choice comes up. Once an A380 is refitted, both cabins jump at once, and the new 12-suite First is the one to wait for.
On a Club Suite aircraft, less often: a 1-2-1 with a door is most of what first class used to be for, and the older first ahead of it is a wider seat, better food and the Concorde Room rather than a different class of travel. The step through AAdvantage is 27,500 miles, and it is the surcharge, the same in both cabins, that makes the award expensive.
On miles the program decides more than the cabin: Asia Miles is the door our desk used most for BA First, with the highest surcharges, and AAdvantage the cheapest in surcharges with the scarcest space. In cash, the fare difference on your date decides, and the desk prices both cabins, and the Virgin Atlantic alternative, on every London quote.
The Traps Are the Same for Both Cabins
The A380 in transition. Until an aircraft is refitted, both its first class and its business are the old products. The seat map tells you which aircraft you have: business entirely on the upper deck in a 1-2-1 means the refit; a 2-4-2 layout means the old cabin.
The surcharge on the award. BA passes its carrier surcharges through on awards in every program, in both cabins, so the cheapest program in miles is not always the cheapest trip. Price it all-in against a sourced fare before transferring.
Heathrow connections. Same-terminal connections work at 60 minutes; between Terminals 3 and 5 the desk plans two hours, and separate tickets need three to four. The UK ETA is enforced, and airside transit is exempt only while bags are checked through.
Where These Numbers Come From
Every route in these tables is checked against the schedule snapshot behind our route pages, so a route appears only if the airline flies it; distance and flight time are the same estimates those pages use. The evidence column says how we know first class is on it: "Desk library" is Biirdee's own carrier and aircraft reference, updated September 2026; "Ticketed by Biirdee" means our desk has issued first class tickets on that airline there between November 2024 and September 2026; "Award scan" means our award scanners have seen first class seats released on it; "Fare scan" means our fare scans have priced a first class fare on the nonstop. Data as of 23 September 2026.
Award prices are the programs' published charts as copied in our desk library: American AAdvantage (June 2026); Alaska Atmos Rewards (June 2026). They are the chart's one-way price per person before taxes and carrier charges, not a price our scanners saw on a date, and a range is the one our own guide on the program states where the program publishes no single figure. The desk's fare and award scans are not published.
The Club Suite network is the one our Club Suite guide derives from the schedule snapshot. Our desk issued 33 British Airways first class tickets between November 2024 and September 2026, 21 for cash and 12 on miles.
BA First vs Club Suite FAQs
Is Club Suite on the same aircraft as BA First?
On the 777s and A350s that carry a first cabin, yes: Club Suite is the business class behind it. On the A380s, both cabins are the old products until each aircraft is refitted, from late 2026, when the new 12-suite First and Club Suite arrive together.
How many more miles is British Airways First than Club Suite?
Through American AAdvantage the step is 27,500 miles: 57,500 in business against 85,000 in first, one-way from the US to London. Alaska Atmos Rewards: Published by phone in first against 70,000 points in business, from the US to London (atmos publishes BA business between the US and London from 70,000 points; the first class band is quoted by phone, with surcharges above $1,000 and a $20 partner booking fee).
Which routes have both BA First and Club Suite from the US?
In our data BA First flies from Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, New York JFK, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle to Heathrow, with the A380 on Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco; business is on the same aircraft on each, Club Suite on the refitted ones. Club Suite alone flies 28 US routes from 27 airports.
Is Club Suite good enough?
Yes, where the aircraft has it: a 1-2-1 with a sliding door and direct aisle access is a different product from the 2-4-2 Club World it replaces. Against the old first class on an un-refitted A380 the gap is real; against Club Suite on a 777 or A350 it is a wider seat and the Concorde Room.
Which program books BA First cheapest?
The one published first class price we can quote is AAdvantage's, 85,000 miles one-way, with BA's surcharges at about $300 to $700 or more; Atmos Rewards quotes BA First by phone, with surcharges above $1,000. Asia Miles, the door our desk has used most because it sees the most space, carries up to $1,800 or more in surcharges. Price every option all-in before you transfer.
