Delta SkyMiles Award Ticket Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): How to Cancel a Flight Booked With Miles

The Short Answer

As of September 2026, Delta charges no fee to cancel or change a SkyMiles award ticket for travel within the United States or for international travel that starts in the United States or Canada, at every membership level from General Member to Diamond Medallion. Cancel before the first flight departs and every mile is redeposited, and the government taxes and fees you paid in cash are refunded to the card. The SkyMiles Program Rules put it in one sentence: members may change the origin, destination, routing, date and time, or cancel award tickets, without a redeposit or change fee, excluding Delta Basic experience fares.

Two exceptions carry a cost. A Delta Basic award (the fare formerly sold as Basic Economy, renamed on 1 October 2025) is non-refundable; you can still cancel it, but Delta deducts a redeposit fee assessed in miles, listed on delta.com as 9,900 to 19,900 miles, and returns the rest. And an award for travel originating outside the US and Canada carries a $150 redeposit fee under Delta's fee schedule, with some origins non-cancelable altogether.

The deadline is absolute: an award not cancelled before departure loses its value, and once any segment has been flown Delta treats the award as used, so there is no partial redeposit. Delta Award Change and Cancellation Rules at a Glance

Every row is Delta's own rule as published on delta.com in September 2026. "Main Classic" is the standard award experience; "Delta Basic" is the renamed Basic Economy. Delta Comfort Basic and the Extra experiences cannot be booked with miles at all.

How to Cancel a Delta Award Ticket

Delta's cancellation flow is the same whether the ticket was paid with cash or miles, and it runs through My Trips on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app. Step 1: find the confirmation number from your flight receipt email and open My Trips, signed in to the SkyMiles account that holds the booking. Step 2: select the trip and choose "Need to Cancel?". Step 3: choose "Start Flight Cancellation" and follow the remaining steps; the confirmation screen tells you what comes back and in what form. For an award, the miles return to the account they came from and the taxes go to the original card.

Delta's own guidance on when to call, at 800-221-1212, covers tickets that were upgraded with miles or certificates, adults traveling with an infant in arms, and tickets issued by another airline (flight numbers that do not begin with DL). One more case matters for award travelers: the terms of the 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation say that for SkyMiles award tickets you should call Delta Reservations to request the cancellation, so if you are inside the first day after booking and want the cleanest outcome, phone it in.

Timing: the request must land before the first flight departs. Delta's general no-show rule is that a customer who does not change or cancel before departure loses the value of the ticket, and the Program Rules add that a partly flown award is considered used, so a return leg cannot be redeposited on its own once the outbound has flown. Delta does not publish how long a redeposit takes; in practice miles typically reappear within a few days, and the tax refund follows the card timeline below.

How to Change a Delta Award Ticket

Changes to a Main Classic award are free in the same markets: within the US, and for international travel that begins in the US or Canada. The mechanics live in My Trips: select the flight, choose "Change or Add Flights", pick the new flights, then check out and pay any difference. Because SkyMiles prices every award dynamically, the "difference" is the gap between what you paid and what the new itinerary costs today, in miles and in taxes; Delta collects a higher price at the time of change, and the TakeOff 15 card terms confirm that a lower price is redeposited to the account.

That makes the change-versus-cancel decision simple on Delta. Since neither carries a fee, the only question is price: if the new dates cost more miles, changing and cancelling-then-rebooking produce the same bill, so change; if a flash sale has cut the price of your route, cancelling and rebooking captures the lower level, and so does a straight change. Watch the Delta Basic trap in both directions: a Basic award can be changed only for a fee assessed in miles, and Delta's pages do not state that fee separately from the 9,900 to 19,900-mile cancellation charge.

Same-day changes are the exception to "free". A Same-Day Confirmed change on an award costs $75 per ticket for General Members and Silver Medallions and is waived for Gold, Platinum and Diamond; it is available only on domestic flights, only within 24 hours of the original departure, and never on Delta Basic. Same-Day Standby costs nothing.

Delta Basic, Partner and Special Cases

Delta Basic is where most of the money is lost. The award is non-refundable, but "non-refundable" on Delta means cancelable for a fee in miles: delta.com's Delta Main comparison table lists a "9,900 - 19,900 miles Redeposit Fee" against a full redeposit for Main Classic. Delta's agency site assigns the two figures, 9,900 miles for US domestic, Canada and short-haul Mexico, Central America and Caribbean trips and 19,900 miles for long-haul international, mirroring the $99 and $199 charges on cash Basic tickets. Cancel before departure and the balance above the fee comes back; a no-show forfeits everything. Delta Basic awards for travel originating outside the US and Canada may be non-cancelable and non-changeable.

Partner awards follow two rules at once. Delta's no-fee promise for trips starting in the US or Canada explicitly includes flights operated by joint-venture and codeshare partners, so an Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic or Korean Air itinerary booked with SkyMiles from a US city cancels free. Awards on other SkyTeam and non-alliance partners, and trips that originate abroad, are subject to the partner's terms and to Delta's $150 redeposit fee where it applies. Three partners (Air Europa, Air Tahiti Nui and Kenya Airways) can only be booked and managed through Delta Reservations.

Two more rules from the Program Rules are worth knowing before you book. Name changes are not permitted once an award ticket has been issued, so an award in the wrong name has to be cancelled and rebooked, and award tickets for travel within or originating in China, Russia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brazil or any African country require a 72-hour advance purchase, which also limits how late you can rebook after a cancellation.

Taxes, Fees and Refund Timing

Every Delta award carries cash taxes: at least $11.20 in US government taxes and fees on a domestic itinerary, and up to $600 in foreign taxes and carrier-imposed fees on international routes, all payable at booking. Delta's travel-planning FAQ states that the same refund rules apply whether a flight was booked with cash, miles or a companion certificate, and that cancelling an unused ticket returns the taxes. On a cancelled award, the miles go back to the SkyMiles account and the taxes go back to the original form of payment.

Refund timing follows Delta's general schedule: credit and debit card refunds are typically processed within seven business days and may take up to two billing cycles to show on a statement; refunds of purchases made by check, cash or other means are typically processed within 20 calendar days. Delta does not publish a service level for the mileage redeposit itself.

Miles + Cash bookings have a wrinkle. The cash portion of a Miles + Cash transaction is a mileage purchase, and Delta refunds it in miles rather than cash when the ticket is cancelled, so if you paid $200 toward an award, expect a larger mileage balance back rather than $200 on the card.

Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rule

Delta's 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation gives you until midnight of the day after purchase, or midnight of the first departure date if that comes first, to cancel any qualifying eTicket for a full refund with no fees; a ticket bought at any hour on Monday can be cancelled until midnight on Tuesday. The policy covers every Basic fare, and the terms address award tickets directly: miles are redeposited, Miles + Cash bookings come back as miles, and Delta asks award travelers to call Reservations to request the cancellation. It does not apply to bookings made through a travel agency or to partially flown reissued tickets.

Outside that window, the only deadline that matters on a Main Classic award is departure. Cancel any time before the first flight leaves and the miles return in full; miss the flight without cancelling and the ticket loses its value. Delta Basic adds the mileage fee but keeps the same deadline: the redeposit is available any time up to departure, and nothing after.
