Emirates Skywards Reward Ticket Cancellation and Change Fees (2026): Classic Saver vs Flex Plus

The Short Answer

As of September 2026, Emirates sells two kinds of Classic Reward on its own flights, and the exit rules follow the type. A Classic Flex Plus reward can be date-changed, re-routed or upgraded to a higher cabin and refunded before travel with no fee. A Classic Saver reward gets one free date change and then costs US$25 per change, US$25 for any other change (a sector change, a fare-brand upsell or a cabin upsell), and US$75 to refund before travel. Neither type can be refunded once travel has started, and the fees themselves are non-refundable. Emirates waives them for infants and in the case of a passenger's death, by phone.

Rewards on partner airlines such as Qantas and United follow a similar grid: one free date change then US$25 per change, US$25 per change per person for anything else, and a US$75 refund fee on fully unused tickets within their validity. Cash+Miles bookings return the miles on cancellation and follow the cash fare's conditions for changes, and an Upgrade Reward can be cancelled with no fee at all. The rule that costs people most is not a fee: Skywards Miles that expired while sitting inside a reward ticket are not re-credited when it is cancelled, unless you are Platinum or a Skysurfer.

Emirates rewards are changed online through Manage your booking, and cancelled through Manage Your Booking plus the online refund form, choosing the "Skywards Miles or Business Reward Points redemption" refund type. This page sets out the fee grid by reward type, the step-by-step, the partner, flydubai and Cash+Miles cases, and the pages on emirates.com that state each rule. For the program itself see our Emirates Skywards guide; for every major program side by side see award ticket cancellation fees compared.

Key Takeaways

  • Classic Flex Plus: free date changes, free other changes and a free refund before travel; Classic Saver: one free date change, then US$25 per change, US$25 for any other change and US$75 to refund.
  • Refunds after travel are not permitted on either type, and partner rewards refund only when fully unused and within ticket validity.
  • Expired miles are never re-credited when a reward is cancelled, except for Platinum members and Skysurfers; check the expiry date of the miles behind a booking before you cancel it.
  • Cancel online: Manage Your Booking, then the refund form with the "Skywards Miles or Business Reward Points redemption" refund type; changes to Emirates rewards can be made in Manage your booking, but flydubai and partner rewards go through the Call Centre.
  • Taxes are refunded with the miles, "subject to an administration fee" Emirates does not quantify; card refunds are submitted to the issuer within seven business days under the US customer service plan.

Every row is Emirates' own rule from the Skywards Programme Rules and its FAQs as published on emirates.com in September 2026. Fees are stated in US dollars, are non-refundable, and are waived for infants and in the case of a passenger's death through the Call Centre.

How to Cancel an Emirates Classic Reward

Step 1: check the reward type and the expiry date of the miles you used, because a Saver refund costs US$75 and expired miles will not come back. Step 2: sign in to emirates.com, open the booking in Manage Your Booking and cancel it. Step 3: complete the online refund form, choosing "Skywards Miles or Business Reward Points redemption" under Refund type; the form itself warns that the entire booking will be cancelled, that expired miles will not be credited back, and that the request cannot be reversed once submitted. Emirates then refunds the unused, unexpired miles along with the applicable taxes, minus the Saver refund fee where it applies and "subject to an administration fee" the rules do not quantify.

Refunds go only to the card used to buy the ticket. Under Emirates' US customer service plan the refund request is submitted to the card issuer within seven business days, and other forms of payment are refunded within 20 calendar days; its change-flight page suggests allowing around 15 business days for the money to land. Emirates publishes no timeline for the miles re-credit.

Three cases need the Call Centre or Live Chat rather than the form: flydubai Classic Rewards, rewards on partner airlines, and any fee waiver for an infant or a deceased passenger. Emirates does not publish a "cancel before departure" deadline for rewards; what its rules say is that refunds after travel are not permitted and that partner rewards refund only when fully unused and within ticket validity. The safe reading is that a reward has to be cancelled before its first flight departs, and that a no-show should be assumed to forfeit the miles.

How to Change an Emirates Classic Reward

Emirates Classic Rewards can be changed online: sign in, open Manage your booking, and use the "Change my booking" link that appears when the booking is eligible for online changes. The change-flight tool covers dates, departure time, connecting flights and cabin class, shows the price difference before you confirm, and applies the change to every passenger on the booking; to change one passenger only, you have to contact Emirates. Changes to flydubai rewards and to partner-airline rewards are made through the Call Centre or the Skywards team.

On Flex Plus the change itself is free, with any fare difference in miles payable. On Saver, the first date change is free and each further date change costs US$25, as does any other change: a different sector, an upsell to a higher fare brand or an upgrade to a higher cabin. Emirates' rules do not state whether a mileage difference is collected when a Saver reward moves to a more expensive date, so expect the tool to show one where it applies. Ticket validity frames every change: the trip must begin within twelve months of issue, with a maximum stay of twelve months on Flex Plus and three months on Saver.

The change-versus-cancel decision on Emirates is therefore a price question. On Flex Plus there is nothing to lose either way, so change if the seat exists and cancel and rebook if a lower level has opened. On Saver, a second date change at US$25 beats a US$75 refund unless the rebooked reward is markedly cheaper; and because Saver awards are the ones most likely to be booked with miles close to expiry, check the expiry date before a cancel-and-rebook, since a refund returns only unexpired miles while a change keeps the original ticket alive.

Partner Rewards, flydubai, Cash+Miles and Upgrades

Rewards on Emirates' airline partners, Qantas and United among them, are valid for twelve months from issue with a maximum stay of three months, must be flown in coupon sequence, and carry their own fee grid: one free date change then US$25 per change, US$25 per change per person for any other change, and a US$75 refund fee, with refunds permitted only on fully unused tickets within validity and expired miles never reinstated. Emirates' FAQ says most partner rewards can be cancelled or modified depending on availability, with charges, through Live Chat or the Skywards team.

flydubai Classic Rewards mirror the Emirates grid, free on Flex Plus and US$25 or US$75 on Saver, with every fee-bearing transaction requested through the Emirates Call Centre and the same warning that expired miles will not be reinstated. Cash+Miles bookings are governed by the cash fare: changes are allowed according to its conditions and any fare difference, taxes or surcharges are paid in cash; on cancellation the miles are refunded minus any that expired in the meantime, and a partly flown Cash+Miles ticket is re-priced so that only the unused percentage of cash and miles comes back, though the refund form warns that miles on a partially used mixed-payment ticket may not be refunded at all.

Upgrade Rewards are the gentlest case: no fee to cancel, and the miles are re-credited unless they expired, with the upgrade voided and re-credited automatically if the underlying ticket is cancelled or reissued. Requests must be made at least six hours before departure online or by phone, or as an instant upgrade at check-in or on board.

Taxes, Expired Miles and Refund Timing

Emirates collects taxes, duties and carrier-imposed charges in cash before a Classic Reward is issued, and lets you pay the carrier-imposed charges with miles. When a reward is refunded, the applicable taxes come back with the unused miles, subject to the administration fee the refund form mentions without a figure; the refund goes to the original card. For a partly used Cash+Miles ticket, only taxes and surcharges are refunded, subject to the fare rules and the same administration fee.

Expired miles are the trap. Skywards Miles are valid for three years, expiring at the end of your birth month (from 1 June 2027, at the end of the month they were earned), and section 9.4 of the program rules says miles that expired after being redeemed are not refunded or reinstated when the reward is cancelled, except for Platinum members and Skysurfers, who get them back with an adjusted expiry. Emirates does sell reinstatement separately: miles that expired within the previous six months can be bought back at US$20 per 1,000, up to 50,000 a year, valid for a further twelve months.

Deadlines, No-Shows and the 24-Hour Rule

For itineraries that include a flight to or from the United States, Emirates lets you cancel a ticketed reservation without penalty for a full refund if the booking was made more than seven days before the first departure and the cancellation is requested through the refund form within 24 hours of booking; the clock starts at booking, not ticketing, and the refund form offers the option explicitly. Outside that case Emirates publishes no cooling-off period, so a Saver reward costs US$75 to refund from the moment it is ticketed.

Emirates does not publish a no-show rule for rewards. Its rules say refunds after travel are not permitted, partner rewards refund only when fully unused, and the US disclosure adds "only within ticket and Miles validity"; nothing says whether a missed flight counts as travel. Treat the first departure time as the deadline and cancel before it. If Emirates cancels your flight, a Classic Reward passenger is moved to the next available flight or referred to another airline at Emirates' discretion, and for US itineraries the Department of Transportation refund rule entitles you to a full refund, miles included, if you choose not to travel. Our award cancellation fees guide covers those involuntary-change rules across every program.

How Biirdee Makes Skywards Changes and Cancellations Seamless

When Biirdee books an Emirates reward with your Skywards Miles, we tell you before ticketing whether it is Saver or Flex Plus, what a second date change or a refund would cost, and when the miles behind it expire. After that, a change or cancellation is one WhatsApp message: your concierge makes the change in Manage your booking or through the Call Centre, files the refund form with the right refund type, and follows both the miles and the tax refund through to your account and card. Where miles are close to expiry we say so before anything is cancelled, because a refund returns only what is still valid.

When plans move rather than die, we price the options side by side: a US$25 Saver change, a cancel-and-rebook onto a cheaper reward, or one of our negotiated business and first class fares on Emirates, which on many routes costs less all-in than a Saver reward plus its carrier-imposed charges and earns Miles and tier miles where the reward earns nothing. You approve; we execute. Start a free flight quote and mention the booking reference.

Emirates Skywards Cancellation FAQs

How much does it cost to cancel an Emirates Skywards reward ticket?

Nothing on a Classic Flex Plus reward cancelled before travel, and US$75 on a Classic Saver reward. Partner-airline rewards also carry a US$75 refund fee and must be fully unused and within validity. No reward can be refunded once travel has started, and the fee is waived for infants and in the case of a passenger's death through the Call Centre.

How do I cancel an Emirates Classic Reward booking?

Sign in to emirates.com, cancel the booking in Manage Your Booking, then complete the online refund form, choosing "Skywards Miles or Business Reward Points redemption" as the refund type. Emirates refunds the unused, unexpired miles and the applicable taxes to the original card. flydubai and partner rewards are cancelled through the Call Centre or Live Chat instead.

Do expired Skywards Miles come back if I cancel a reward?

No. Emirates' program rules state that miles which expired after being redeemed are not refunded or reinstated when the reward is cancelled, unless you are a Platinum member or a Skysurfer. Miles that expired within the previous six months can be bought back separately at US$20 per 1,000, up to 50,000 a year.

Can I change the date of an Emirates Saver reward?

Yes. The first date change is free and each further change costs US$25; any other change, such as a different sector, a fare-brand upsell or a higher cabin, also costs US$25. Flex Plus rewards change free, with any fare difference in miles payable. Changes to Emirates rewards can be made online in Manage your booking when the booking is eligible.

Are taxes refunded when I cancel an Emirates reward?

Yes, the applicable taxes are refunded with the unused miles to the card used for the booking, minus the Saver refund fee where it applies and subject to an administration fee that Emirates does not quantify on its pages. Under the US customer service plan the card refund is submitted within seven business days.

Can I cancel an Emirates reward after I have flown the outbound?

No. Refunds after travel are not permitted on Classic Saver or Flex Plus rewards, and partner rewards refund only when fully unused. A partly flown Cash+Miles ticket is re-priced so that only the unused percentage is refunded. Change the return rather than cancelling it.

Does the 24-hour rule apply to Emirates reward bookings?

When the itinerary includes a flight to or from the United States and was booked more than seven days before departure, yes: request the cancellation through the refund form within 24 hours of booking and Emirates refunds it in full without cancellation conditions. Emirates publishes no cooling-off period for other itineraries.

Can Biirdee cancel or change my Emirates reward for me?

Yes. For rewards our desk books with your Skywards Miles, changes and cancellations are handled end to end by your concierge over WhatsApp, including the refund form, the expiry check on the miles and the tax refund. If you booked it yourself, send us the details and we will say which fee applies and whether changing, cancelling and rebooking, or switching to one of our negotiated Emirates fares is the cheapest move.
