JAL First vs JAL Business Class (2026): Same A350-1000, the US Routes, and the 20,000-Mile Step Up

Six first class suites and 54 doored business seats share every JAL A350-1000. The step up is the cheapest on this site in miles, and the business cabin is the one to protect: here is where the two fly together, the published charts and our own ledger.

JAL First vs JAL Business Class (2026): Same A350-1000, the US Routes, and the 20,000-Mile Step Up

The Short Answer

The A350-1000 carries six first class suites in front of 54 doored business seats on every route it flies; the 787s that fly JAL's other US routes carry the older Sky Suite business, 2-3-2 on some, and no first class. From the US both cabins fly together on three routes in our data: New York JFK, Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles to Tokyo Haneda, the desk library's flagship A350-1000 routes, with London Heathrow to follow and San Francisco still on the outgoing aircraft. Every A350-1000 route carries both cabins, so where JAL First flies, the new business is behind it.

The step up is a small one in miles and a real one on the aircraft. JAL's A350-1000 business is a 1-2-1 with a sliding door and a headphone-free audio system, the closest match on the Pacific to ANA's The Room; the first class ahead of it is six suites with a wider bed, a 43-inch screen and the Haneda first class lounge. In cash the gap is the usual multiple; on miles the two partner charts put it at 20,000.

Through American AAdvantage the step is 20,000 miles (60,000 in business against 80,000 in first, one-way from the US to Tokyo, nonstop); Through Alaska Atmos Rewards the step is 20,000 points (60,000 in business against 80,000 in first, one-way from the US to Tokyo), plus a $20 partner fee each way through Atmos. Of the 6 JAL First tickets our desk issued between November 2024 and September 2026, 5 were paid fares and 1 used miles or points (1 through American AAdvantage).

Key Takeaways

  • Same aircraft on every A350-1000 route: from the US, New York JFK, Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles to Haneda carry six first suites in front of the doored business cabin; London Heathrow is next, per the desk library.
  • Through American AAdvantage the step is 20,000 miles (60,000 in business against 80,000 in first, one-way from the US to Tokyo, nonstop).
  • Through Alaska Atmos Rewards the step is 20,000 points (60,000 in business against 80,000 in first, one-way from the US to Tokyo).
  • AAdvantage's figures are the nonstop price after the July 2026 repricing; an itinerary that connects prices at 80,000 in business and 100,000 in first.
  • 5 of our 6 JAL first class tickets were cash; 1 used miles, through AAdvantage.
  • The trap is business, not first: JAL's 787s fly the other US routes with the older Sky Suite, 2-3-2 on some, and no first class. Check the aircraft even when first is not the plan.

Every JAL route in our first class map: the desk library's A350-1000 routes, the London route it names as next, and the San Francisco route still on the outgoing aircraft. The A350-1000's doored business cabin is behind first class on each. Schedule confirmed on 28 August 2026.

When JAL First Is Worth the Step

On miles, nearly always when there is space. Twenty thousand miles separates the two cabins through both AAdvantage and Atmos Rewards on a nonstop, the smallest gap on this site, and neither program adds a carrier surcharge on JAL. The limit is the six seats: JAL releases first class space to partners sparingly, so the desk watches the date and books business as the fallback.

In cash, less often. JAL's A350-1000 business is a doored 1-2-1 with a real bed, and on a Haneda overnight it delivers most of what first class is for; the first class suite adds width, the lounge and the meal, at a fare that is a multiple of business. Our desk sources JAL first below the published figure on most dates, and the sourced fare against the business fare on your date is the comparison that decides.

Against ANA, the choice is the same shape: ANA's The Room against JAL's A350-1000 business is a fair fight, and ANA's The Suite against JAL First is too; JAL flies more US cities on the new aircraft and AAdvantage is the cheaper award door. The desk prices both on every Tokyo quote.

The Traps Are the Same for Both Cabins

The 787. JAL flies the other US routes on 787s with the older Sky Suite business, which is 2-3-2 with middle seats on some aircraft, and no first class. A JAL business booking to Tokyo is not an A350-1000 booking unless the route is one in the table; check the aircraft before booking either cabin.

Haneda versus Narita. The A350-1000 flies from Haneda, 30 minutes from central Tokyo; Narita is an hour or more. On a same-fare choice, the desk books Haneda in both cabins.

The repriced award. AAdvantage reprices a JAL award when the itinerary connects, in both cabins, so a positioning flight on the same ticket raises the price; book the nonstop on the award and the positioning flight separately.

Where These Numbers Come From

Every route in these tables is checked against the schedule snapshot behind our route pages, so a route appears only if the airline flies it; distance and flight time are the same estimates those pages use. The evidence column says how we know first class is on it: "Desk library" is Biirdee's own carrier and aircraft reference, updated September 2026; "Ticketed by Biirdee" means our desk has issued first class tickets on that airline there between November 2024 and September 2026; "Award scan" means our award scanners have seen first class seats released on it; "Fare scan" means our fare scans have priced a first class fare on the nonstop. Data as of 23 September 2026.

Award prices are the programs' published charts as copied in our desk library: American AAdvantage (September 2026); Alaska Atmos Rewards (September 2026). They are the chart's one-way price per person before taxes and carrier charges, not a price our scanners saw on a date, and a range is the one our own guide on the program states where the program publishes no single figure. The desk's fare and award scans are not published.

Our desk issued 6 Japan Airlines first class tickets between November 2024 and September 2026, 5 for cash and 1 on miles. The partner charts are our AAdvantage guide's and Atmos Rewards guide's copies.
