The Peninsula Beijing did something almost no city hotel does: it tore out its own room inventory and rebuilt smaller. The 2017 renovation converted the hotel to all suites, cutting the room count to roughly 230 and making the entry-level accommodation here the most generous in Beijing — around 60 square metres before you pay for anything special.
The location has always been the other half of the case. Wangfujing puts you within walking distance of the Forbidden City's eastern gate and Tiananmen, in a district that stays busy after dark, which is not universally true of central Beijing hotel neighbourhoods.
All-Suite Living
Every category is a suite, which changes the arithmetic when you compare rates against rivals quoting for a standard room. Interiors are contemporary and warm rather than heritage-styled: timber, stone, generous dressing areas, and the brand's full technology package with bedside panels and the valet box. Bathrooms run to twin vanities and deep tubs as standard.
Upper-floor suites face either the Forbidden City rooftops to the west or the modern skyline east. The Peninsula Suite and the specialty suites are among the largest in the city and get used for exactly what you would expect — state visits, film promotion, family stays that need real space.

Huang Ting, the Arcade and Seeing the City
Huang Ting is the hotel's set piece: a Cantonese dining room assembled from salvaged Qing-era grey brick, carved screens and courtyard-house doorframes, so that you eat inside a reconstructed siheyuan. It is theatrical in a way the rest of the hotel is not, and worth one dinner even if you are eating your way around the city.
The Peninsula Arcade beneath the hotel is among the more serious luxury retail concentrations in China. For sightseeing, the Forbidden City's Donghuamen gate is a walk, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace are short drives, and the hotel's cars — Rolls-Royces here too — handle the Great Wall day trip to Mutianyu or Jinshanling, which is the excursion worth arranging before you arrive.
