The Peninsula Hong Kong opened in December 1928 on the Kowloon waterfront, positioned to catch passengers coming off the Kowloon–Canton railway and the cruise liners docking beside it. It was built to be the finest hotel east of Suez, and — through a Japanese occupation, a 1994 tower extension and nearly a century of competition — it has never really surrendered the title. What surprises first-time guests is the value. The Peninsula London and Paris trade at roughly double the rate; the original, in one of the world's great hotel cities, still opens in the mid-hundreds. For a stay in Hong Kong, it remains the most hotel per dollar in the luxury tier.
Rooms: Kowloon Side vs the Tower
The hotel is really two buildings. The 1928 original wraps the lobby in colonial-era proportions — high ceilings, deep silence, rooms that feel like apartments. The 30-storey tower added in 1994 is where the famous views live: floor-to-ceiling glass looking straight across Victoria Harbour at the Hong Kong Island skyline, which at 8pm during the Symphony of Lights is one of the great free shows in hospitality.
The practical advice is simple: pay for the harbour view. A Deluxe Harbour View or above is the reason to stay here rather than anywhere else, and the gap over a city-view room is usually smaller than the gap between this hotel and its rivals. Rooms across the board are unusually large by Hong Kong standards, and the in-room technology — a Peninsula obsession, developed in-house — remains the most genuinely useful in the industry rather than the most gadget-laden.

Tea, Gaddi's and the Roman Pool
Afternoon tea in The Lobby is the ritual — a string quartet on the mezzanine, gilded columns, and a queue that does not take reservations. Go early or go on a weekday; residents get no special dispensation, which is part of the charm. Gaddi's has been serving French food since 1953 and still runs the room like a stage; Spring Moon does the Cantonese canon properly; Felix, on the 28th floor, is worth a drink for the Starck interiors and the view even if you eat elsewhere.
Upstairs, the Roman-style colonnaded pool and the Peninsula Spa occupy the top of the tower with harbour views on three sides. And then there is the fleet: fourteen Rolls-Royce Phantoms in a green mixed exclusively for the hotel, plus two rooftop helipads — the airport transfer here is the single most theatrical arrival in the brand.
