The Peninsula Hong Kong: Rooms, Rates & How to Book

The Peninsula Hong Kong opened in December 1928 on the Kowloon waterfront, positioned to catch passengers coming off the Kowloon–Canton railway and the cruise liners docking beside it. It was built to be the finest hotel east of Suez, and (through a Japanese occupation, a 1994 tower extension and nearly a century of competition) it has never really surrendered the title. Everything the brand now stands for was invented here first: the page boys, the lobby tea, the green Rolls-Royces, the fleet-of-one-brand discipline that keeps the portfolio at just twelve hotels.

What surprises first-time guests is the value. The Peninsula London and Paris trade at roughly double the rate or more; the original, in one of the world's great hotel cities, opened from $598 a night on our October 2026 rate checks. For a stay in Hong Kong, it remains the most hotel per dollar in the luxury tier.

Rooms: Kowloon Side vs the Tower

The hotel is really two buildings. The 1928 original wraps the lobby in colonial-era proportions: high ceilings, deep silence, rooms that feel like apartments. The 30-storey tower added in 1994 is where the famous views live: floor-to-ceiling glass looking straight across Victoria Harbour at the Hong Kong Island skyline, which at 8pm during the Symphony of Lights is one of the great free shows in hospitality.

The practical advice is simple: pay for the harbour view. A Deluxe Harbour View or above is the reason to stay here rather than anywhere else, and the gap over a city-view room is usually smaller than the gap between this hotel and its rivals. Rooms across the board are unusually large by Hong Kong standards, and the in-room technology (a Peninsula obsession, developed in-house) remains the most genuinely useful in the industry rather than the most gadget-laden.

Tea, Gaddi's and the Roman Pool

Afternoon tea in The Lobby is the ritual: a string quartet on the mezzanine, gilded columns, and a queue that does not take reservations. Go early or go on a weekday; residents get no special dispensation, which is part of the charm. Gaddi's has been serving French food since 1953 and still runs the room like a stage; Spring Moon does the Cantonese canon properly; Felix, on the 28th floor, is worth a drink for the Starck interiors and the view even if you eat elsewhere.

Upstairs, the Roman-style colonnaded pool and the Peninsula Spa occupy the top of the tower with harbour views on three sides. And then there is the fleet: fourteen Rolls-Royce Phantoms in a green mixed exclusively for the hotel, plus two rooftop helipads; the airport transfer here is the single most theatrical arrival in the brand.

Our Read on the Numbers

Guests rate it among the very best Peninsulas: 9.46 out of 10, second only to Beijing among the nine we could rank, with 91% of recent guests scoring it 9 or more. Breakfast came up in 27% of written reviews and those reviews averaged 9.67, above the hotel's own average; across the brand, reviews that mention breakfast average 8.64. The catch is the company it keeps. Hong Kong's top hotels are a crowded field, and the Peninsula placed fourth of the six we scored there, behind Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong (9.86), The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong (9.75) and The Landmark Mandarin Oriental (9.60, on older reviews).

On price it holds up well. It was cheaper than Rosewood Hong Kong and Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong on all four of our test stays, and cheaper than Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong on three (all but New Year). Our monthly checks ran from $627 (January and March) to $830 (November), a spread of 32%, so pick your dates for the weather rather than the rate. Breakfast for two added a flat $67 a night on the same room, and on two of our four stays the cheapest rate already included it. Our desk has booked it for June, at about $1,030 a night.
