Free Stopovers: 8 Airlines That Add an Extra Country, or a Free Hotel Night, to Your Ticket

A layover is dead time. A stopover is a second trip. The difference is one line in the fare rules, and on a handful of airlines that line reads in your favour: break the journey at the hub for a day or a fortnight and pay the same airfare you would have paid to fly straight through. Four carriers go further and put you in a hotel at their expense when the connection runs long.

This post covers the eight programs our advisors use most, split the way the airlines split them: the ones that give you an extra country for no extra airfare, and the ones that give you a free hotel. Every rule below was verified in September 2026. Stopover programs change quietly and often, so treat each figure as a benchmark to confirm at booking rather than a promise.

Layover, Stopover, and Why the Airline Is Happy to Help

In fare language a layover is a connection of under 24 hours and a stopover is anything longer. Most fares price a stopover as two separate tickets, which is why a week in Lisbon on the way to Rome usually costs more than Rome alone. A stopover program removes that penalty. The airline lets you break the journey at its hub without repricing the through fare.

Airlines do this because a hub is a place, not just an airport. Panama, Portugal, Iceland, and Singapore all back their national carrier's program through the tourism board, and Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, and Addis Ababa are competing for the same connecting passenger between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. A traveler who spends two nights and a few hundred dollars in the hub city is worth more to everyone than one who spends 90 minutes at the gate.

So there are two families. Free extra country: you pay for your own hotel, and the airline waives the fare penalty for stopping. Free hotel: the connection is long, and the airline pays for the room. The mechanics differ, and the fine print differs more.

Free Extra Country: Four Airlines That Waive the Stopover Penalty

These four let you add days in the hub on an ordinary ticket. You pay for the hotel and the meals. The airfare stays what it was.

Copa Airlines: Up to 15 Days in Panama

Copa's Panama Stopover is the newest and most generous of the group. In June 2026 the airline doubled the permitted stay from seven days to 15, the largest extension since the program began, and Panama's tourism authority is targeting more than 250,000 stopover visitors in 2026 on the strength of it.

• The deal. Between 24 hours and 15 days in Panama City, on either the outbound or the return leg of a Copa itinerary that connects through Tocumen, for no additional airfare. One stopover per ticket, in one direction.
• How to book. On copaair.com, use the Stopover or multi-city search, enter your origin, Panama City (PTY) as the intermediate stop, and your final destination, and set the dates to build in the nights you want. The fare shown is the through fare. Fares still vary by date, so a different day can price differently, but there is no stopover surcharge.
• The extras. Confirmed stopover passengers get the Panama Stopover partner network at panama-stopover.com: hotels, restaurants, tours, and transfers offering discounts that typically run 15 to 30 percent and reach 48 percent in places. Show your booking confirmation or the stopover voucher email with ID. Copa is a Star Alliance member, so United, Aeroplan, and other Star programs earn miles on the flights as normal.
• Watch for. The program is built for cash tickets booked with Copa. On Copa's own ConnectMiles awards a round trip allows one stopover. On a partner award the stopover follows that program's rules, and United's Excursionist Perk ended for tickets issued from August 21, 2025, so a United award through Panama has to be built as separate one-ways.

TAP Air Portugal: Up to 10 Days in Lisbon or Porto

TAP's Portugal Stopover is the most established program on this list and the most flexible about where it lets you stop. It has carried more than 193,000 stopover travelers to date and is now built into the booking flow rather than hidden behind a phone call.

• The deal. One to 10 days, defined as 24 to 240 hours, in Lisbon or Porto, on the outbound or the return of a one-way, round-trip, or multi-city TAP itinerary on medium and long-haul routes. You can fly into one Portuguese city and out of the other. One stopover per ticket.
• How to book. On flytap.com, look for "Add a free Stopover" when selecting flights, or add it to an existing booking at flytap.com/stopover. There is no stopover surcharge; the fare is the through fare for the dates you pick.
• The extras. A 25 percent discount, excluding airport taxes, on any TAP domestic flight taken during the stopover, which is how you reach Porto from Lisbon, or Faro, Madeira, or the Azores. The program also carries offers from more than 150 partners across hotels, restaurants, museums, tours, and shops. The domestic discount cannot be combined with other promotions, including Miles&Go discounts.
• Watch for. Award tickets are not eligible. The free Portugal Stopover is a cash-ticket benefit only, so a Miles&Go redemption, or a Star Alliance partner award on TAP, gets no free stopover. On the other hand TAP's transatlantic fares are often among the cheapest to Europe from the US, which makes the 10 free days a genuine two-for-one.

Icelandair: Up to 7 Nights in Iceland, or 21 on a Flexible Fare

Icelandair's Stopover has been running in one form or another since the 1960s and is the template the others copied. It works on transatlantic itineraries between North America and Europe that connect through Keflavik, the airport for Reykjavik.

• The deal. Up to seven nights in Iceland for no additional airfare on a standard Economy or Saga Premium fare. Economy Light fares are limited to three nights. Economy Flex and Saga Premium Flex fares allow up to 21 nights. You can stop over on both the outbound and the return of the same ticket, which no other program here permits.
• How to book. On icelandair.com, switch on the "Stopover in Iceland" option in the booking flow and choose the number of nights. Stopovers of up to seven nights book online. Eight to 21 nights on a Flex fare go through the Icelandair service centre.
• The price. The airline does not charge a stopover fee, but the fare can move because you are now flying on different dates, exactly as it would if you changed the dates without a stopover. Compare the stopover itinerary against the nonstop on the same dates before assuming the difference is a fee.
• Watch for. Every guide we checked reports that award tickets do not qualify, so call Icelandair before assuming a points booking will carry a stopover. And budget for the ground: the airfare is free, Iceland is not. A rental car is the way to see it.

Singapore Airlines: Up to 30 Days in Singapore, on the Right Ticket

This is the entry that needs the most translation. The 30 days that circulates on social media is real, but it is a KrisFlyer award rule, not a cash-fare rule, and Singapore Airlines runs three separate stopover benefits that are easy to confuse.

• On a KrisFlyer award. One complimentary stopover of up to 30 days on a round-trip Saver award, or on a one-way Advantage or Access award. A round-trip Advantage award allows two. A one-way Saver award gets no free stopover, but you can add one for USD 100. The stopover has to be requested when the award is booked; it cannot be added later, and since August 2022 stopovers longer than 30 days are not offered at any price. • On a cash ticket in Business or First. Under the Holiday Before the Holiday program launched in January 2025, Business and First Class passengers on Singapore Airlines revenue tickets with a Singapore stopover of 24 hours or more receive one to two complimentary hotel nights, a curated tour, airport transfers, and a SGD 40 Changi voucher. Economy and Premium Economy passengers on the same stopover receive a SGD 20 Changi voucher. Register at hbth.singaporeair.com after booking.
• On any cash ticket. The Singapore Stopover Holiday is a paid package, bookable with the flight, that bundles a hotel night, return airport transfers, unlimited rides on the SIA Hop-on bus, and free admission to about 15 attractions. It is not free, but it is priced well below the pieces bought separately, and it is the simplest way to turn a 24-hour connection into a day in Singapore.
• Watch for. On cash Economy fares, whether a stopover is allowed at all, and at what surcharge, is set by the fare rules of the ticket, so ask before you buy. The award route is the reliable way to get the 30 days. Transit passengers with roughly five and a half hours or more between flights can also join Changi's free guided city tours, no stopover needed.

Free Hotel: Four Airlines That Pay for the Room

These four solve a different problem. The connection through the hub is long, often overnight, and rather than leave you in the terminal the airline books and pays for a hotel. The room is free, but the days are not open-ended. Each program applies to a window of hours, and outside that window it does not exist.

Turkish Airlines: A Night in Istanbul, Two in Business

Turkish Airlines' Stopover in Istanbul is the most generous free-hotel program in the world, because it does not only cover an awkward overnight connection. It lets you deliberately build a stay of up to a week into the ticket and still have the first night or two paid for.

• The deal. Economy passengers get one night in a four-star hotel. Business Class passengers get two nights in a five-star or boutique hotel. Passengers whose journey starts in the United States, Canada, or Australia currently get one extra night on top, so two nights in Economy and three in Business. The nights must be consecutive, and the benefit applies once per ticket, on the outbound or the return but not both.
• Who qualifies. International-to-international itineraries via Istanbul Airport (IST), not Sabiha Gökçen, with a connection of at least 20 hours and no more than seven days, on a ticket issued by Turkish Airlines (the ticket number starts with 235). No status or membership is needed. Miles&Smiles award tickets on Turkish-operated flights qualify, but an award with a stopover has to be booked by phone; the website will not build it. Eligibility also depends on the departure country and the fare, so deep-discount fares can be excluded.
• How to book. Book the flights first with the long connection in place, then apply at stopover.turkishairlines.com at least 72 hours before departure (some countries use a dedicated email address instead). Turkish assigns the hotel from its contracted list, and you choose from what is available when you apply. Meals and getting around are on you.
• For shorter connections, or a day out instead of a night in. Touristanbul runs free guided city tours from the airport for connections of six to 24 hours, from a three-and-a-half-hour morning circuit to an eleven-and-a-half-hour full day with meals. It is a separate program from the hotel, so the windows overlap: under 20 hours the tour is the only option, and between 20 and 24 hours you can take either, the hotel if you applied 72 hours ahead, the tour if you simply turn up. Register at the Touristanbul desk on the arrivals floor. Places are first come, first served, and the daily schedule was revised on 1 May 2026, so check the current timings against your connection. Qatar Airways: A Night in Doha, Free or From USD 14

Qatar runs two programs that get mixed together constantly. One is a free transit hotel for an unavoidable long connection. The other is a deliberately cheap stopover package for travelers who want the days. They have different rules, different booking channels, and different prices, and the free one is the harder of the two to get.

• The free version, called STPC. Qatar Airways provides complimentary transit accommodation when your connection in Doha is between eight and 24 hours and no shorter connection was available on your route that day. The fare must be at least USD 400 for an adult (USD 300 for a child), the booking class must be on the eligible list (Economy Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N, and Q; Business J, C, D, I, and P; First F and A), and award tickets, Avios redemptions included, do not qualify. Economy passengers get a three-star hotel, Business a four- or five-star, First a five-star. Transfers and any transit visa are arranged, and meal vouchers come with the longer qualifying layovers. Request it from Qatar Airways at least 72 hours before departure. It is not booked through the stopover portal.
• The cheap version, called Qatar Stopover. Through Discover Qatar, any confirmed Qatar Airways, codeshare, or oneworld ticket with a Doha transit of 12 to 96 hours can book hotel packages from USD 14 per person per night in a four-star hotel, USD 24 in a premium five-star, USD 31 in a five-star with beach access, and USD 83 in a luxury five-star with breakfast. Up to four nights per direction and two bookings per ticket. Book at discoverqatar.qa once the flights are confirmed.
• Which to use. If your connection lands in the eight-to-24-hour window and you paid a normal fare, ask for STPC first. If you actually want days in Doha, or you are on an award ticket, the USD 14 stopover is the better tool and one of the cheapest hotel nights in aviation. • Watch for. Both programs have changed shape more than once in the past two years. The paid package terms were revised in April 2025, and the free STPC program has been withdrawn and reinstated before, so confirm the current rules at booking.

Emirates: A Night in Dubai, With Meals, Transfers, and the Visa

Emirates Dubai Connect is the most complete of the free-hotel programs when you qualify. It covers the hotel, the meals, the transfers, and the UAE visa. It is also the most rule-bound, because it exists to cover connections Emirates could not make shorter, not to hand out free stopovers.

• The deal. A hotel room (recent stays have used the Copthorne Dubai, Le Méridien Dubai Airport, and the JW Marriott Marquis, at Emirates' discretion), meals matched to the time of day you check in, airport transfers, and the UAE entry visa, all at no cost.
• Who qualifies. First and Business passengers with a Dubai connection of six to 26 hours. Economy and Premium Economy passengers with a connection of eight to 26 hours. The connection must be the shortest available on the day for your cabin and fare, both flights must be on a single ticket issued by Emirates (the ticket number starts with 176) and marketed by Emirates or Qantas, and the base fare plus carrier surcharge must clear a minimum that varies by origin, so deeply discounted fares can miss. Skywards award tickets qualify if the itinerary otherwise fits.
• How to book. Eligible itineraries are flagged in Manage Booking on emirates.com. If yours is not, contact Emirates at least 24 hours before your flight to Dubai to request it. Do not lengthen a connection on purpose to reach the window; the shortest-connection rule will disqualify it.
• Watch for. Flights operated by flydubai qualify only when they use Terminal 3, and separate tickets never qualify. If you want days in Dubai rather than a night, the paid Dubai Stopover packages through Emirates Holidays, or one of the luxury hotels in Dubai we recommend, are the route.

Ethiopian Airlines: A Night in Addis Ababa, Arranged on Arrival

Ethiopian's transit hotel is the least known of the four and the easiest to use, because nothing has to be applied for. If the itinerary qualifies, the voucher is waiting at the transfer desk.

• The deal. A hotel night, meals, and transfers between Bole airport and the hotel when your connection in Addis Ababa is between eight and 24 hours. Most passengers are placed at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, a short shuttle from the terminal, or the Skylight In-Terminal Hotel inside the airport. Business Class passengers get the higher category and more meal vouchers.
• Who qualifies. Both flights must be operated by Ethiopian Airlines, international to international, on a single ticket. Unusually, it does not matter who issued the ticket or whether it is an award. A Star Alliance partner award on Ethiopian qualifies the same as a cash fare bought from the airline.
• How to book. Nothing to book. After landing, go to the transit desk, show your onward boarding pass, and collect the hotel voucher. The transit visa is handled at the airport as part of the same process.
• What is coming. In April 2026 Ethiopia's Council of Ministers approved a policy that would let Ethiopian Airlines passengers leave the airport visa-free for stays of 24 hours to seven days. As of August 2026 it was still awaiting parliamentary ratification and not yet in force, so for now a longer stopover needs an e-visa. It is the clearest sign yet that Addis intends to compete with Istanbul and Doha as a stopover city.

The Fine Print That Applies to All Eight

• One ticket. Every program requires the whole journey on a single ticket. Two separate bookings that happen to connect at the hub never qualify, for the free hotel or the free stopover.
• One direction. With the exception of Icelandair, the benefit applies once per ticket, on the outbound or the return. Choose the direction where the stopover falls on the dates you want.
• The fare can still move. "No additional airfare" means no stopover surcharge. It does not mean the fare is frozen. You are now flying on different dates, and the fare for those dates applies. Price the stopover itinerary against the nonstop on the same dates to see the real cost, which is often zero and occasionally negative.
• Award tickets are the exception more often than the rule. TAP and Icelandair exclude them entirely. Qatar's free hotel excludes them. Copa and Turkish allow them with conditions. Singapore's 30 days exists only on awards. Emirates and Ethiopian allow them. Check the line that applies to you before transferring points, because transfers are irreversible.
• Apply early. Turkish and Qatar want 72 hours. Emirates wants 24. The free hotel is not automatic anywhere except Addis Ababa.

• A stopover is an entry, not a transit. Emirates and Ethiopian arrange the visa within the program, and Qatar admits most nationalities without one. For the rest, check the hub country's entry rules exactly as you would for a destination.

Which Stopover Is Worth Building a Trip Around

• For a real second holiday: Copa and TAP. Fifteen days in Panama or ten in Portugal is a trip in its own right, and both countries are inexpensive on the ground.
• For a long weekend somewhere spectacular: Icelandair, in both directions if you like.
• For the best free hotel: Turkish Airlines, especially in Business, where two or three nights in a five-star hotel in Istanbul come with the ticket.
• For a premium-cabin bonus: Singapore's Holiday Before the Holiday, which quietly adds a hotel night or two to a Business or First fare that already justified itself.
• For the cheapest paid night in the world: Qatar's USD 14 stopover.
• For a connection you did not choose: Emirates and Ethiopian, which simply make the long night pleasant.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Is the stopover really free? The airfare is. On Copa, TAP, Icelandair, and Singapore you pay for your own hotel and meals; the saving is the second ticket you did not buy. On Turkish, Qatar (STPC), Emirates, and Ethiopian the hotel itself is free, within the hour windows above.
• Can I get a stopover on a partner award? Sometimes. It depends on the program whose miles you are spending, not the airline you are flying. Ethiopian's free hotel and Emirates Dubai Connect look at the itinerary rather than the ticket type, but TAP, Icelandair, and Qatar's free hotel exclude awards, and Copa and Turkish need the award booked in a particular way. Ask before you transfer points.
• What is the difference between a stopover and an open jaw? A stopover is a break in the journey at a connecting city. An open jaw is flying into one city and home from another. Several of these programs allow both, and combining them, for instance Lisbon on the way out and home from Porto, is how a single ticket becomes a proper tour.
• Can I use two of these programs on one trip? Yes, if the itinerary is built for it. A common pairing is a Turkish Airlines ticket to Asia with an Istanbul stopover on the way out, and a Qatar Airways ticket home with a cheap Doha stopover. They are separate tickets, which is fine here because each program lives entirely within its own ticket.
• Do I still earn miles on a stopover itinerary? On the flights, yes, exactly as you would without the stop. The hotel nights the airline books do not earn hotel points.
