How It Works at IST
Everything at IST happens under one enormous roof: a central processor for check-in, security and the duty-free expanse, with piers fanning out to the gates. There is no terminal-change shuttle to worry about; the challenge is simply distance, and it is real: gate-to-exit walks of fifteen or twenty minutes are routine, more from the furthest stands, which is why buggies and a greeter who knows the shortcuts earn their keep. Departing passengers also pass a security screen at the terminal entrance itself, a Turkish standard that catches first-timers by surprise.
Turkey is outside the Schengen area, so every international arrival clears Turkish passport control; many nationalities need an e-visa arranged before travel (quick to obtain online, but not something to discover in the queue), and paid fast-track lanes operate where the airport offers them. The city is a long way off: the airport sits near the Black Sea on the European side, roughly forty kilometres from the centre, and the drive to Beyoğlu or Sultanahmet swings from about forty-five minutes to well over an hour with Istanbul’s traffic. That is one reason a chauffeur handoff inside the terminal, timed to your actual landing, matters more here than at most airports.
