Viking Cruises

Premium cruising, booked by a concierge desk at the same fare as direct

Cruising by subtraction — no kids, no casinos, no umbrella-drink clutter, just destination-first travel in Scandinavian calm.

Viking runs on subtraction. The Swiss-based line, founded in 1997, decided what a cruise did not need — children, casinos, formal nights, art auctions, the whole carnival layer — and removed it, leaving quiet ships, one coherent Scandinavian design language and a schedule built around the destination. The formula proved portable: the same sensibility now spans European rivers, the Nile, ocean voyages and expedition sailings, so a guest can move between formats without relearning the brand.

Inclusions follow the same logic of decisions removed. A shore excursion is included in each port, Wi-Fi and beer and wine with meals are part of the fare, and enrichment leans toward lectures and local culture rather than production spectacle. The guest profile is squarely adult, curious and repeat-prone — the Viking Explorer Society past-guest community is famously devoted.

River and ocean alike, Viking itineraries start far from most American front doors — a European river town, a Nordic harbor, a Nile gateway. That first flight is where Biirdee earns its keep: business-class fares into the embarkation city, timed a day early, with the transfer to the ship already standing by.

Who Viking Suits

Adults Who Want a Quiet Ship

With no children aboard and no casino floor, evenings settle into conversation, music and early nights — the atmosphere many travelers assumed cruising could not offer.

Destination-First Travelers

An included excursion in every port, culturally focused lectures and itinerary pacing all signal the same priority: the place, not the vessel, is the point.

One-Brand Loyalists Across Rivers and Oceans

Viking lets you carry the identical design, dining and service expectations from a European river voyage to an ocean crossing to an expedition sailing.

Viking: FAQs

Is Viking really adults-only?

Yes — Viking does not carry children, on rivers or oceans. That single policy shapes the entire onboard atmosphere and is a major reason its guests rebook.

Why does Viking have no casino?

It is a deliberate brand decision, along with skipping formal nights and onboard selling rituals. The bet is that a segment of travelers will pay for calm, and Viking’s growth suggests the bet was right.

Viking river vs Viking ocean — which first?

Rivers suit travelers who want a town outside the window every morning and near-zero motion; oceans suit those who want sea days, bigger spas and longer range. The service culture is deliberately identical, so start with the geography you want most.

What does a Viking fare include?

One excursion per port, Wi-Fi, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, and specialty dining without surcharge are standard. Extras are a shorter list than on mainstream lines — mostly premium drinks packages, optional tours and spa services.

Is Viking worth it compared to mainstream premium lines?

If you would use the included excursions and value the adults-only quiet, the effective gap narrows quickly once you price equivalents a la carte elsewhere. If you want casinos, kids’ facilities or big-production entertainment, Viking removes exactly what you are paying for.
