The ship Silversea started with, reworked in 2017 into an ice-class expedition vessel that heads for the poles.
Silver Cloud has lived two full careers. She entered service in 1994 as the ship that introduced Silversea, then a 2017 conversion gave her ice-class strength and a new posting at the ends of the map. At around 16,800 tons with 254 guests, she now pairs expedition capability with the comfort standard she was built to set.
Her seasons alternate between Antarctica and the Arctic and Greenland, following the polar summers. The house formula survives the latitude intact — a butler for every suite, an all-inclusive fare — and that is precisely her argument: the planet’s wildest coastlines, approached without giving up the ship.

At double occupancy — the number that sets the ship's whole rhythm
Roughly 66 tons per guest — the space ratio luxury lines compete on
Born in 1994 as Silversea’s original ship and converted in 2017 for polar work, Cloud carries the line’s history and its expedition ambitions at once.
The conversion added expedition capability without touching the fundamentals: every suite keeps its butler, and the fare keeps its all-inclusive shape at the far ends of the map.
Antarctic seasons in the austral summer, the Arctic and Greenland when the north opens up — her year follows the ice edge in both hemispheres.
Both, by design. Her 2017 conversion gave a classic luxury hull ice-class expedition capability, so zodiac landings and polar coastlines come with suites, butlers and an all-inclusive fare. Travelers who want expedition content without expedition austerity are exactly who she serves.
Her deployments concentrate on the polar regions — Antarctica during the southern summer, the Arctic and Greenland in the northern one. Book well ahead; polar berths at this comfort level are scarce.
She sails with 254 guests at double occupancy, a count kept deliberately low for expedition operations, where small numbers mean more time ashore per landing. It also keeps the onboard feel closer to a lodge than a liner.
