The Best French Riviera Beach Hotels, Honestly Ranked
Most of this coast is pebbles, and most "beachfront" hotels are across a road. Here is who genuinely has the water.

Two facts reset expectations on the French Riviera. First, most of the coast east of Cannes is pebble, not sand — Nice's famous beach is smooth grey stones, and water shoes are a real recommendation. Sand begins properly around Antibes and dominates the Saint-Tropez peninsula. Second, "beachfront" on the Croisette means the hotel runs a private club across a four-lane boulevard, not that you walk out of the lobby onto the water.
What this coast has instead of long beaches is the plage privée: a managed stretch with loungers, service, a restaurant and a jetty, usually charged by the day. The hotels below are ranked by what they actually give you — direct water access, a seawater pool, or a club worth the transfer.
The Short Answers
- Best swimming, full stop: Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc — the seawater pool blasted into the rock in 1914, with cabanas and ladders straight into the Mediterranean.
- Best beach club: Club Dauphin at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat — a 33-metre seawater pool on the rocks, reached from the hotel by funicular.
- Best sand: the Saint-Tropez peninsula — Pampelonne and l'Escalet are the only genuinely sandy beaches in the top tier.
- Best hotel actually on the sand: Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel, directly on La Garoupe — no road to cross, which on this coast is rarer than it sounds.
- Cannes reality check: the Croisette hotels' beaches are private clubs across the boulevard, usually charged separately from the room rate.
- Nice and Villefranche are pebble. Pack water shoes; nobody warns you and everybody wishes they had.

Sand vs Pebbles, and How the Clubs Work
The geography is simple once you know it. From Menton through Monaco, Èze, Villefranche and Nice, the shore is pebble — beautiful, clear water, hard on bare feet. Around Antibes it turns to coarse sand at La Garoupe and Salis, Cannes has imported sand along the Croisette, and the Saint-Tropez peninsula has the real thing: Pampelonne's long sweep and the quieter coves at l'Escalet and Gigaro.
Beach clubs are usually a separate charge, even at your own hotel, and in July and August the good loungers are allocated days ahead. Ask us to hold them at the same time as the room — front-row cabanas at Eden-Roc, Club Dauphin sunbeds and Pampelonne's better clubs are all bookable in advance and all gone if you wait until arrival. If swimming is the priority, note also that the seawater pools at Eden-Roc and Club Dauphin are heated and open well beyond the sea-swimming season.

Does the French Riviera have sandy beaches?
Some. Nice, Villefranche and most of the eastern coast are pebble. Sand appears around Antibes (La Garoupe, Salis), along the Croisette in Cannes, and properly on the Saint-Tropez peninsula at Pampelonne, l'Escalet and Gigaro. Pack water shoes for anywhere east of Antibes.
Which Riviera hotel has the best beach?
Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, though it is a rock pool and sea ladders rather than sand. For actual sand at the door, Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel on La Garoupe. For a beach club as an experience, Club Dauphin at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat.
Are hotel beach clubs included in the room rate?
Usually not. Loungers, cabanas and umbrellas are typically charged per day even for hotel guests, and in high season they allocate days in advance. Confirm what your rate includes and reserve loungers when you book the room.
When is the sea warm enough to swim?
June through September reliably, with September often the best month — warm water, thinner crowds and softer rates. May and October are swimmable for the hardy; the heated seawater pools at Eden-Roc and Club Dauphin extend the season at both ends.
