Cathay Pacific First vs Aria Suite (2026): The Retrofit That Swaps One for the Other, the Routes, and the Miles Step Up

Every other airline on this site puts its new business class behind its first class. Cathay takes the first class out: each 777-300ER that gets the Aria Suite loses its six first seats. Here is what that means for the routes, the miles and the choice.

Cathay Pacific First vs Aria Suite (2026): The Retrofit That Swaps One for the Other, the Routes, and the Miles Step Up

The Short Answer

The two cabins do not share an aircraft: first class flies only on the unretrofitted 777-300ERs, and the Aria Suite retrofit removes first class from each 777-300ER it reaches, so the same flight number carries one or the other. In our data Cathay first class flies New York JFK and Los Angeles from the US and London Heathrow and Beijing from Hong Kong, on the 777-300ERs the retrofit has not reached; the Aria Suite, per the desk library, is on 18 of the 30 777-300ERs and reaches 7 US airports on 7 routes in our schedule data. The retrofit is due to finish by late 2027, when the first class cabin leaves the 777-300ER fleet, and Cathay's next first class arrives with the 777-9.

So the question on a Cathay flight is which cabin the aircraft carries, not which to pick. On an unretrofitted aircraft the business behind first is the 2013 reverse-herringbone without a door, and the step up to first is a wide, open suite of six with a 36-inch screen and a bed that was the best in the air for a decade. On a retrofitted aircraft the Aria Suite is a 1-2-1 with a sliding door and a 4K screen, and there is no first class to step up to.

On miles: Through American AAdvantage the step is 40,000 miles (70,000 in business against 110,000 in first, one-way from the US to Hong Kong), before the surcharges Cathay adds through Asia Miles and the taxes alone through AAdvantage. Of the 12 Cathay Pacific First tickets our desk issued between November 2024 and September 2026, 7 were paid fares and 5 used miles or points (5 through Cathay Asia Miles).

Key Takeaways

  • One cabin or the other: first class flies only on the unretrofitted 777-300ERs, on New York JFK and Los Angeles from the US in our data; a 777-300ER with the Aria Suite has no first cabin.
  • Through American AAdvantage the step is 40,000 miles (70,000 in business against 110,000 in first, one-way from the US to Hong Kong).
  • Through Asia Miles the first class range is 125,000 to 140,000 miles one-way from the West Coast against 85,000 in business, per our Asia Miles guide, with Cathay's surcharges on top; Cathay no longer publishes the chart.
  • Cathay Asia Miles booked 5 of our 12 Cathay first class tickets; 7 were cash.
  • The Wing First at Hong Kong reopened in April 2026 and The Wing Business is closed to 2027, so on the ground first class is ahead by more than usual while the retrofit lasts.

Where Cathay First Still Flies

Every Cathay Pacific route in our first class map: the routes where our desk has ticketed or our award scans have seen the first cabin on an unretrofitted 777-300ER. Each of these flights carries the Aria Suite instead once its aircraft is refitted. Schedule confirmed on 2 September 2026.

When Cathay First Is Worth the Step

While it lasts, and against the old business. On an unretrofitted 777-300ER the cabin behind first is the 2013 seat without a door, and Cathay first is the step from a good business class to a cabin of six with a bed wider than most first classes. It is also the only Cathay first class until the 777-9 arrives, so a client who wants to fly it has a window that closes route by route through 2027.

Against the Aria Suite, the question does not arise on the same flight: a retrofitted aircraft has no first cabin. It arises across dates. On a route like Hong Kong to New York or Los Angeles, one departure can be an unretrofitted aircraft with first class and another the Aria Suite with none, and the 40,000 miles between them through AAdvantage buy a six-seat open cabin and The Wing First against a doored business seat. The desk's view: the Aria Suite is the better business class by a distance, and the old first is still the better cabin; which to book turns on whether the date with first class is also the date you want.

On miles the program matters as much as the cabin. AAdvantage is cheaper in miles and in surcharges, and sees the least space; Asia Miles sees the most, charges Cathay's surcharges, and is the door our desk used for every Cathay first class award in the window. In cash, our desk sources Cathay first below the published fare on most dates.

The Traps Are the Same for Both Cabins

The aircraft on the date. Cathay rosters refitted and unrefitted 777-300ERs across the same routes, and a schedule change can swap one for the other after booking. A first class booking on an aircraft that is then refitted is reseated in business; the seat map at booking and again a week out tells you which cabin you have.

The A350 confusion. Cathay's A350s fly many of the US routes and carry neither cabin: the earlier reverse-herringbone business without a door, and no first class. A route in the Aria Suite guide is a 777-300ER route; the A350 routes are the ones to avoid when either cabin is the point.

The lounge closure. The Wing Business is closed to 2027, so business passengers at Hong Kong use The Pier Business or the other lounges; first class passengers have both The Pier First and the reopened The Wing First. On a long connection the ground difference is larger than the seat difference.

Where These Numbers Come From

Every route in these tables is checked against the schedule snapshot behind our route pages, so a route appears only if the airline flies it; distance and flight time are the same estimates those pages use. The evidence column says how we know first class is on it: "Desk library" is Biirdee's own carrier and aircraft reference, updated September 2026; "Ticketed by Biirdee" means our desk has issued first class tickets on that airline there between November 2024 and September 2026; "Award scan" means our award scanners have seen first class seats released on it; "Fare scan" means our fare scans have priced a first class fare on the nonstop. Data as of 23 September 2026.

Award prices are the programs' published charts as copied in our desk library: Cathay Asia Miles (June 2026); American AAdvantage (June 2026). They are the chart's one-way price per person before taxes and carrier charges, not a price our scanners saw on a date, and a range is the one our own guide on the program states where the program publishes no single figure. The desk's fare and award scans are not published.

The Aria Suite network is the one our Aria Suite guide derives from the schedule snapshot. Our desk issued 12 Cathay Pacific first class tickets between November 2024 and September 2026, 7 for cash and 5 on miles.

Cathay First vs Aria Suite FAQs

Is the Aria Suite on the same aircraft as Cathay first class?

No, and that is the point: the Aria Suite retrofit removes the first class cabin from each 777-300ER it reaches, so a 777-300ER carries the old business behind first class, or the Aria Suite and no first class. By late 2027 the retrofit finishes and first class leaves the fleet until the 777-9.

How many more miles is Cathay Pacific First than Aria Suite?

Cathay Asia Miles: 125,000 to 140,000 in first against 85,000 miles in business, from the US West Coast to Hong Kong (cathay no longer publishes its chart; the business figure is the Standard level our Asia Miles guide gives and the first class range is the same guide's). Through American AAdvantage the step is 40,000 miles: 70,000 in business against 110,000 in first, one-way from the US to Hong Kong.

Which routes still have Cathay first class from the US?

New York JFK and Los Angeles to Hong Kong in our data, on the unretrofitted 777-300ERs, and London Heathrow and Beijing from Hong Kong. The Aria Suite flies 7 US routes from 7 airports in our schedule data, on the refitted aircraft; the A350 routes carry neither cabin.

Is the Aria Suite good enough?

Yes: a 1-2-1 with a sliding door, a 4K screen and a proper bed, the business class Cathay should have had years ago. Against the old first it gives up the six-seat open cabin, the wider bed and The Wing First; against the old business it is a different product.

Which program books Cathay first class cheapest?

In miles and in surcharges, AAdvantage (110,000 miles one-way from the US, taxes only), which sees the least space; Asia Miles charges 125,000 to 140,000 miles from the West Coast plus Cathay's surcharges and sees the most, and is the door our desk used for every Cathay first class award in the window.
