Etihad First Apartment vs Business Class (2026): Same A380, the Six Routes, and the AAdvantage Step Up
The First Apartment flies only on Etihad's A380s, and the business class behind it on that aircraft is the older one. The newest Etihad business is on the US flights, which carry no first class at all. Here is how the two cabins line up, route by route, with the published chart and our own ledger.

The Short Answer
The A380 carries the First Apartment and The Residence in front of the older Business Studio; the A350-1000s and 787-9s, which fly every US route, carry Etihad's newest doored business and no first class. In our data the A380 flies six routes from Abu Dhabi: London Heathrow, Paris, Tokyo Narita, Toronto, Bangkok and Singapore, per the desk library, and on each the Apartment and the A380's Business Studio fly together. No US flight carries either: New York, and Etihad's other US routes, are A350-1000 and 787-9 flights with the newest business seat and no first class.
So the step up is a connection as well as a cabin. From the US the Apartment is reached by flying business to Abu Dhabi and taking an A380 sector onward (London, Paris, Tokyo, Toronto, Bangkok or Singapore), or by flying to London or Paris and taking the A380 from there. On the A380 itself the step is a large one: the Business Studio behind the Apartment is the 2014 staggered 1-2-1 without a door, and the Apartment is a closed room with a separate bed and armchair, a shower on the deck and The Residence beyond it.
On miles: Through American AAdvantage the step is 45,000 miles (70,000 in business against 115,000 in first, one-way from the US to Abu Dhabi), with Etihad's surcharges and a partner booking fee on top. Of the 7 Etihad First Apartment tickets our desk issued between November 2024 and September 2026, 5 were paid fares and 2 used miles or points (2 through American AAdvantage).
Key Takeaways
- Same aircraft on the six A380 routes: London Heathrow, Paris, Tokyo Narita, Toronto, Bangkok and Singapore from Abu Dhabi carry the Apartment in front of the A380's Business Studio. No US flight carries the A380, so a US itinerary reaches the Apartment with a connection.
- Through American AAdvantage the step is 45,000 miles (70,000 in business against 115,000 in first, one-way from the US to Abu Dhabi), before Etihad's surcharges.
- The business on the US flights is the better business class: the A350-1000s and 787-9s carry Etihad's newest seat, with a door, while the A380 behind the Apartment keeps the older Business Studio.
- American AAdvantage booked 2 of our 7 Etihad first class tickets; 5 were cash. The desk finds Etihad premium space on aa.com only about 30 days out, and Amex dropped Etihad as a transfer partner in June 2026.
- US preclearance at Abu Dhabi clears both cabins before departure, so a US-bound connection through Abu Dhabi lands as a domestic arrival.

When the Apartment Is Worth the Step
On the A380 sector, usually. The business cabin behind the Apartment is the older Business Studio, a staggered 1-2-1 without a door, and the Apartment is one of the three or four cabins in the world that are rooms rather than seats. On Abu Dhabi to London, the shortest of the six routes, the step buys a shower and a bed you do not have to convert; on Abu Dhabi to Tokyo or Toronto it buys a night's sleep in a real bed.
On the US sector, the question is moot and the answer is business. No Etihad US flight has a first cabin, and the business it does have is the newest in the fleet, with a door. The desk's usual Etihad itinerary is business from the US to Abu Dhabi and the Apartment on the A380 onward, priced as one ticket, where the step up applies only to the sector that has it.
On miles the door is AAdvantage, at 115,000 miles one-way for first against 70,000 miles for business from the US, and the limit is space: Etihad releases its premium cabins to American only close to departure, about 30 days out in the desk's experience. A plan that needs the Apartment on a fixed date months ahead is a cash plan, and our desk sources the fare below the published figure on most dates.
The Traps Are the Same for Both Cabins
The US route with no first class. A client who books Etihad first class "to New York" has booked business, because the A380 left the US. The Apartment is on the six routes in the table and nowhere else; the table's far ends are where to look.
The space on aa.com. Etihad premium space reaches AAdvantage only about 30 days before departure, in both cabins. Book the cash fare early and watch for the award, or accept that a fixed-date Apartment is a cash cabin.
The transfer partner that is gone. Amex Membership Rewards dropped Etihad Guest in June 2026, and Etihad Guest itself prices its own first class high; AAdvantage is the practical door for a US traveler, and Citi and Bilt reach it only through other currencies.
Where These Numbers Come From
Every route in these tables is checked against the schedule snapshot behind our route pages, so a route appears only if the airline flies it; distance and flight time are the same estimates those pages use. The evidence column says how we know first class is on it: "Desk library" is Biirdee's own carrier and aircraft reference, updated September 2026; "Ticketed by Biirdee" means our desk has issued first class tickets on that airline there between November 2024 and September 2026; "Award scan" means our award scanners have seen first class seats released on it; "Fare scan" means our fare scans have priced a first class fare on the nonstop. Data as of 23 September 2026.
Award prices are the programs' published charts as copied in our desk library: American AAdvantage (June 2026). They are the chart's one-way price per person before taxes and carrier charges, not a price our scanners saw on a date, and a range is the one our own guide on the program states where the program publishes no single figure. The desk's fare and award scans are not published.
Our desk issued 7 Etihad first class tickets between November 2024 and September 2026, 5 for cash and 2 on miles. The AAdvantage figures are our AAdvantage guide's copy of the published partner chart.
First Apartment vs Etihad Business FAQs
Is Etihad business on the same aircraft as the First Apartment?
On the A380, yes: the Apartment and The Residence are on the upper deck in front of the A380's Business Studio, on London Heathrow, Paris, Tokyo Narita, Toronto, Bangkok and Singapore from Abu Dhabi in our data. Etihad's newest business, with a door, is on the A350-1000s and 787-9s, which carry no first class and fly every US route.
How many more miles is Etihad First Apartment than Etihad business class?
Through American AAdvantage the step is 45,000 miles: 70,000 in business against 115,000 in first, one-way from the US to Abu Dhabi.
Can I fly the First Apartment from the US?
Not nonstop. Every Etihad US flight is an A350-1000 or 787-9 with business as the front cabin. From the US the Apartment takes a connection at Abu Dhabi onto an A380 sector, to London, Paris, Tokyo, Toronto, Bangkok or Singapore, or a flight to London or Paris and the A380 from there.
Is Etihad business good enough?
On the US flights, yes, and it is the better business class: the newest seat with a door. On the A380 behind the Apartment it is the older Business Studio, a staggered 1-2-1 without a door, and that is the sector where the step up to the Apartment is worth the most.
Which program books the Apartment?
American AAdvantage, at 115,000 miles one-way from the US against 70,000 miles for business, plus Etihad's surcharges and a partner fee; it booked 2 of our 7 Etihad first class tickets. Space reaches aa.com about 30 days out, so a fixed date months ahead is usually a cash fare, which our desk sources below the published figure.
