The Peninsula Bangkok: Rooms, Rates & How to Book

The Peninsula Bangkok is the rare hotel whose floor plan is the whole idea. Opened in 1998 on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, the tower is shaped like a shallow W so that every one of its roughly 370 rooms faces the water: no city-view consolation category, no bad side of the building. From the higher floors you watch rice barges, longtail boats and the Temple of Dawn from bed.

Being on the west bank sounds like a compromise and is actually the advantage: you get garden space, quiet, and a river frontage that the Bangkok-side hotels cannot match, with the hotel's own shuttle boats running continuously across to the Skytrain. For a first trip to Bangkok, the river is the correct place to sleep.

Rooms, the Pool and the Boat

Rooms are large and calm (teak, cream, river light), with the brand technology package and bathrooms that carry the hand-held mist showers and deep tubs the Peninsula uses everywhere. Because every category faces the water, the upgrade ladder buys height and space rather than a different outlook, which makes it one of the more honest rate cards in the city.

The three-tiered pool steps down toward the river through frangipani and palms and is genuinely one of the best hotel pools in Asia. The spa occupies a colonial-style villa in the garden, separate from the tower, and the riverside lawn is where the hotel does its best work in the evening: dinner under the trees with the city glittering across the water.

Getting Around From the West Bank

The shuttle boats are the thing to understand. They run every few minutes from the hotel jetty to the Bangkok side, connecting to River City and to Saphan Taksin, where the BTS Skytrain takes you to Silom, Siam and Sukhumvit without touching the traffic. In practice you reach central Bangkok faster from here than from many hotels physically closer to it.

The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun are all short river hops rather than road journeys: the single best reason to base yourself on the water. Suvarnabhumi airport runs about 45 minutes to an hour by car depending on the hour; the hotel's green fleet covers it.

Our Read on the Numbers

The Peninsula Bangkok scored 9.20 out of 10 with recent guests, sixth of the nine Peninsulas we could rank and last of the five luxury hotels we scored in Bangkok, a strong field led by Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River (9.65). The weak spot in the reviews is age: 15% of written reviews mentioned the hotel feeling dated, and those averaged 7.6. The river is the strength: the view came up in 21% of reviews (averaging 9.57) and the pool in 21% (9.43).

Price is the counterweight. It was the cheapest of the five on three of our four stays ($296–574 a night; Rosewood Bangkok undercut it in March), and its monthly checks barely moved ($397–443), with November, in the cool dry season, the cheapest month. Breakfast is where the bill grows: on the same room it added $147–153 a night on our November and March stays and $60 on the other two, which makes breakfast included as a booking benefit worth having here.
