The Peninsula Chicago: Rooms, Rates & How to Book

The Peninsula Chicago opened in 2001 on East Superior Street, just off North Michigan Avenue, and it has spent the two decades since collecting "best hotel in America" placings from more or less every publication that hands them out. The reason is unglamorous and decisive: it was purpose-built, so the rooms are enormous, the service floors are properly sized, and nothing had to be squeezed into an inherited shell.

For anyone who wants to understand what the brand does when unconstrained, this and Tokyo are the two hotels to book. Chicago is the cheaper of the pair.

Rooms and Why the Size Matters

Entry-level rooms run well above what American five-stars typically call a deluxe, with separate dressing areas, bathrooms with twin vanities and soaking tubs, and the brand's bedside control panels. The building's L-shape means most rooms face either Michigan Avenue and the lake beyond or the city skyline west, both good, with the lake side carrying a modest premium.

On our October 2026 checks the lowest rates ran from $463 to $1,002 a night across four test stays, which for this quality of room is among the strongest value propositions in American luxury hotels. Chicago's seasonality is pronounced: summer and early autumn are peak, deep winter is genuinely cheap, and the hotel is a comfortable place to be cold.

The Pool Floor, Z Bar and Shanghai Terrace

The pool deck is the hotel's signature: a glass-walled swimming pool on an upper floor opening onto an outdoor sun terrace over the Magnificent Mile, with light pouring in even in February. It is the single most pleasant hotel wellness floor in the country and it is why regulars keep coming back.

Z Bar, on the same level, runs an outdoor terrace that becomes one of the city's better summer drinking spots. Shanghai Terrace does the brand's Cantonese cooking in an Art Deco room with its own terrace, and The Lobby serves an afternoon tea that Chicago treats as an institution in its own right. The Art Institute, Millennium Park and the river architecture cruise are all walkable or a short ride away.

Our Read on the Numbers

The Peninsula Chicago scored 9.25 out of 10 with recent guests, fifth of the nine Peninsulas we could rank and second of the three luxury hotels we scored in Chicago, behind Four Seasons Hotel Chicago (9.86). Families wrote 30% of its reviews. The pool floor delivers: the few reviews that mention the pool all scored it 10. The handful that raised price averaged 5.67, a reminder that at these rates expectations run high.

It is the most seasonal American Peninsula: our monthly checks ran from $485 in March to $995 in July, about double, and our test stays from $463 (March) to $1,002 (July). Add US taxes: the hotel collected about $83–179 a night at checkout on every stay, and no breakfast rate was on sale. Even so, it was cheaper than The Peninsula New York and The Peninsula Beverly Hills on all four of our stays and scored higher than both, which makes it the best-value American Peninsula on our numbers. Four Seasons Hotel Chicago scored higher still and cost less in November, but more on our other three stays.
