The Peninsula New York: Rooms, Rates & How to Book

The Peninsula New York occupies a 1905 Beaux-Arts building at 700 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of 55th: a landmark address in the most-walked stretch of Midtown, two blocks below Central Park and directly among the Fifth Avenue flagships. The brand took it over in 1988, and it remains the portfolio's American anchor.

What it offers, in a New York market crowded with newer and taller, is location plus the brand's service depth: page boys, a properly staffed concierge desk that still solves things, and rooms considerably larger than the Midtown average.

Rooms and the Fifth Avenue Trade-Off

There are roughly 235 rooms across the landmark building, generous by New York standards and fitted with the brand's technology package. The suites on the higher floors get the Fifth Avenue and Central Park sightlines that justify the premium; lower categories look into the streetscape, which is characterful but noisier.

The honest trade-off is that this is a converted 1905 building rather than a purpose-built tower, so the geometry is occasionally quirky and the very top-tier views belong to the specialty suites rather than the entry categories. Ask for a high floor, and ask for Fifth Avenue-facing if the noise does not bother you; the outlook is the reason to be at this address.

Salon de Ning, the Spa and the Walk to the Park

Salon de Ning is the rooftop bar and the hotel's best-kept asset: a terrace over Fifth Avenue with the Midtown skyline around it, styled as a 1930s Shanghai socialite's apartment. It fills in summer; go early on a weeknight. Clement handles the restaurant side and The Gotham Lounge the afternoon tea.

The spa, pool and fitness floors sit at the top of the building with skyline windows: a genuine luxury in a city where hotel pools are usually a windowless afterthought. Central Park is two blocks north, MoMA is one block west, and Bergdorf, Tiffany and the rest are outside the door.

On 1 October 2026 we priced The Peninsula New York through our own booking engine (the one behind hotels.biirdee.com) on four test stays and on a two-night midweek stay in every month to September 2027, and we scored its 100 most recent verified guest reviews ourselves. Our Read on the Numbers

The numbers are least kind to New York. Its 8.87 out of 10 is the lowest of the nine Peninsulas we could rank, with 76% of recent guests scoring it 9 or more and 11% under 7, and it placed fourth of the seven luxury hotels we scored in New York, behind the Carlyle (9.32), Four Seasons Hotel New York (9.19, on older reviews) and Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown (9.07). The building shows in the reviews: 22% of written reviews mentioned it feeling dated, the highest share at any Peninsula, though those reviews still averaged 8.89. Service remains the strength (59% of reviews, averaging 9.33).

It is also one of the most expensive Peninsulas, and its rate swings hard: $2,331 a night for 10–13 Nov 2026, the highest November rate in the brand, against $1,145 for 12–15 Mar 2027. Budget for US taxes on top (about $163–235 a night at checkout on three of our four stays), and note that no breakfast rate was on sale on any of them. In our monthly checks February was the cheapest month ($1,226) and December the priciest ($2,275). On the numbers alone, the Carlyle scored higher and cost less on three of our four stays.
