Every room, photo and amenity at Capella Sydney

Capella Sydney opened in March 2023 inside the 1915 Department of Education building, designed by New South Wales government architect George McRae, after a seven-year conversion. It fills a full city block in the Sandstone Precinct, with 192 rooms and suites over nine floors, interiors by Melbourne's BAR Studio and about 1,500 artworks by 65 Australian artists.

Our verdict: this is the hotel to book in Sydney if you want the best-reviewed stay rather than the cheapest. Its 100 most recent guests scored it 9.78 out of 10, the best of the three Sydney luxury hotels we scored and of any Capella we track, and 97% of them scored it 9 or more. The 50 Best Hotels named it Best Hotel in Oceania in 2025 and 2026, and it gained a second MICHELIN Key in 2026. Couples write most of its reviews (69%), and solo travelers another 16%. On our test stays it cost $664–1,341 a night: more than the Four Seasons and less than the Park Hyatt on every date we checked.

Capella Sydney in Brief

  • 9.78 out of 10 across its 100 most recent reviews (January to August 2026): 97% of guests scored 9 or more and 1% under 7, the best record of the three Sydney luxury hotels we scored and of any Capella.
  • Lowest rates on our four test stays: $817 (10–13 Nov 2026), $1,341 (27–30 Dec 2026), $798 (12–15 Mar 2027) and $664 (15–18 Jul 2027); the November and July rates were for accessible rooms.
  • Cheapest months on our calendar: July ($625), June and December ($626). Dearest: February ($1,112), 78% above the cheapest.
  • Breakfast was in the cheapest rate in November and over New Year; in March and July the cheapest rate with breakfast was $805 and $739.
  • Two MICHELIN Keys (promoted in 2026), Forbes Four-Star, and No. 16 in The 50 Best Hotels 2026 (No. 12 in 2025).
  • Our desk booked an eleven-night stay here in May 2026, two days before arrival, at about $716 a night.

Capella Sydney by Our Numbers

On 3 October 2026 we priced Capella Sydney through our own booking engine (the one behind hotels.biirdee.com) on the same four stays we check at every hotel: 10–13 Nov 2026, 27–30 Dec 2026, 12–15 Mar 2027 and 15–18 Jul 2027, two adults, lowest rate per night. We also priced a two-night midweek stay (Tuesday to Thursday of the third week) in every month to October 2027, and we scored the hotel's 100 most recent verified guest reviews ourselves (the mean out of 10, the share scoring 9 or more and the share under 7). Rates are what the engine charged at booking; taxes the hotel collects at checkout are extra. Live rates change daily, so read these as the rates on 3 October 2026.

What the Scores Say

There is very little to fix here. Only 1% of recent guests scored a stay under 7, and every topic that comes up in more than 5% of written reviews averages above 9.5 when guests mention it: service (68% of reviews, 9.52), breakfast (9.86), food (9.75), the spa (9.67) and the pool (10.0). Breakfast is worth singling out: the 19% of reviews that mention it average 9.86, against 9.41 at Capella Singapore, the brand's flagship.

The guest mix explains the mood. Couples wrote 69% of recent reviews and solo travelers 16%; families are only 9%. Our read: this is a hotel for couples and solo travelers who want calm, art and a serious bar in the middle of the city, and for them it is the best-reviewed stay in our Sydney set by a distance.

Capella, the Four Seasons or the Park Hyatt?

The gap on guest scores is wide: 9.78 against 9.17 at the Four Seasons and 9.08 at the Park Hyatt, and 97% of Capella's recent guests scored 9 or more, against 79% and 82%. The Park Hyatt was also the dearest of the three on every date, $1,191–1,971 a night against Capella's $664–1,341, so on our numbers Capella is both the better-reviewed and the cheaper of the two. The Four Seasons is the value play: $424 in November and $462 in March against Capella's $817 and $798, though only $43 less in July ($621 against $664).

Which to book? Capella for a special trip or a long stay. The Four Seasons if price matters more than polish, especially outside the winter. On these numbers we see little reason to pay the Park Hyatt's premium unless its particular location is the point of the trip. For the wider city, see our Sydney hotel ranking.

Rooms, Dining and the Spa

The cheapest rooms on our engine were Deluxe Rooms and Premier Rooms with a king bed. Above them come the Deluxe Suites (the cheapest suite, $1,486–1,790 a night on our November, March and July stays), the Tower Room, the Farrer Suite and, at the top, the Capella Suite at $7,164–7,195 a night. On two of our four test stays the lowest rate was for a mobility-accessible room, so check which room a headline rate buys before you book.

Brasserie 1930 serves seafood and steaks, McRae Bar pours Australian spirits and Aperture does afternoon tea, under a culinary program overseen by chef Brent Savage and sommelier Nick Hildebrandt. Australia has no MICHELIN restaurant guide, so there are no stars to count. The top-floor Auriga Spa has a 65-foot heated pool lit by vintage copper lanterns, in what was the building's art gallery; it uses Synthesis Organics products and offers "Connect to Country" rituals. Every evening, the Living Room hosts Echoes of Eternity, a cocktail ritual.

What Our Desk Booked

Our desk booked Capella Sydney for an eleven-night stay in May 2026, two days before arrival, at about $716 a night. It is a useful data point on two counts: the hotel could be booked at very short notice outside the peak weeks, and the nightly rate on a long late-autumn stay came in below the $784 our calendar shows for May 2027.
