Capella Ubud: Tents, Rates and Our Honest Review

Capella Ubud opened in 2018 in Keliki, Bali, as Bill Bensley's take on an early settlers' tented camp, and no trees were cut to build it. It has 23 keys, described as 22 tents and a two-bedroom Lodge, and every tent has a terrace with a daybed, a private saltwater plunge pool and indoor and outdoor showers. Some are themed: the Baker's, the Photographer's and the Toy Maker's tents among them.

Our verdict: it is the most unusual stay among the Bali hotels we track and, of the three Ubud retreats on our list, usually the cheapest. Its lowest rate was $841–1,673 a night on our test stays, with breakfast included every time, against $1,190–1,635 at Mandapa and $1,192–2,733 at Four Seasons Sayan. The caveat is the evidence. There are only 47 recent reviews of Capella Ubud on our booking platform, written between 2019 and 2026, so its 9.45 out of 10 is a thinner, older reading than its rivals' 100 reviews each. We would book it for a few nights of rainforest seclusion, and price the exact dates first, because its rates move a lot from week to week.

Capella Ubud by Our Numbers

On 3 October 2026 we priced Capella Ubud through our own booking engine (the one behind hotels.biirdee.com) on the same four stays we check at every hotel: 10–13 Nov 2026, 27–30 Dec 2026, 12–15 Mar 2027 and 15–18 Jul 2027, two adults, lowest rate per night. We also priced a two-night midweek stay (Tuesday to Thursday of the third week) in every month to October 2027. Rates are what the engine charged at booking; taxes the hotel collects at checkout are extra.

We also scored its most recent verified guest reviews ourselves, as we do at every hotel, but here there are only 47 of them, written between March 2019 and August 2026. That is half our usual sample of 100 and an older window than our two-year cut (marked †), so read the score as a guide rather than a verdict.

What the Reviews Say

With 47 reviews, small differences mean little, so we read only the big topics. Service comes up in 70% of written reviews and averages 9.42; food comes up in 37% and averages 9.4. The pool, a 30-meter above-ground pool in the rainforest, and the spa each came up in only a handful of reviews, too few to score separately.

The share of guests scoring under 7 (8.5%, four of the 47) is the highest of the six Capellas we could score, and with a sample this small four reviews are enough to move it. Our read: the guests who choose Capella Ubud mostly love it, and the evidence is thin enough that the experience of people you trust counts for as much as the score.

When to Go

Two things stand out. First, the calendar runs well above our test stays: the midweek two-night stays cost $1,124–1,797 a night, while our test stays came in as low as $841 (12–15 March) and $1,039 (15–18 July). Capella Ubud's price moves a lot from week to week, so price your exact nights before you settle on a month. Second, the cheapest months on the calendar were January ($1,124) and December ($1,137), and the dearest was November ($1,797); May, June and September all sat at $1,558. October 2027 had nothing bookable on our engine when we checked.

Capella, Mandapa or Four Seasons Sayan?

Capella Ubud ranks fourth of the six Bali hotels we could score, but every one of the top four carries an older review window, so read the order loosely: 9.45 to 9.77 is a narrow band. The comparison that matters is the Ubud trio. Mandapa (9.77) and Four Seasons Sayan (9.55) score higher on fuller samples, but Capella was the cheapest of the three on our November, March and July stays, and it included breakfast every time. In July the gap is stark: $1,039 a night at Capella against $1,635 at Mandapa and $2,733 at Sayan. Only over New Year was Mandapa slightly cheaper ($1,623 against $1,673). On the 2026 awards, Mandapa leads too: Three MICHELIN Keys and No. 61 in The 50 Best Hotels, against Two Keys for Capella and One for Four Seasons Sayan.

Which to book? Mandapa for the top guest score in Bali on our numbers; Capella for a smaller, stranger stay of 23 keys at a lower price on most dates; Four Seasons Sayan scores between them but was the dearest of the three in July and over New Year. Tents, Dining and the Spa

The cheapest tents on our stays were Terrace Tents and Forest Tents; the top categories were Forest Tents and Valley Tents, at $1,799–2,065 a night. Each tent has a 24-hour "Culturalist", and wellness activities such as rice-paddy walks and mountain biking are included in the rate.

Api Jiwa is a 16-seat, ten-course Asian barbecue in the omakase style; Mads Lange, a split-level tent, serves breakfast; and the Officer's Tent serves refreshments through the day. Bali has no MICHELIN restaurant guide. The Auriga Spa occupies three canvas tents, with treatments tied to the phases of the moon.
