Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok opened in 1876 as The Oriental, Thailand's first luxury hotel, and 2026 is its 150th anniversary year. A century and a half on, recent guests rate it among the best hotels the brand runs anywhere: 9.58 out of 10 across its 100 most recent verified reviews, sixth of the 31 Mandarin Orientals we could rank, with 91% scoring it 9 or more and only 1% under 7. That 1% is the lowest share of unhappy guests of the seven Bangkok luxury hotels we scored. It holds Three MICHELIN Keys in 2026, is No.10 in The 50 Best Hotels 2026 (No.7 in 2025) and is Forbes Five-Star.
Our verdict: book it for a couple's city stay, and avoid the week between Christmas and New Year if the budget matters. Couples wrote 61% of its recent reviews. Outside New Year its lowest rate ran $518–740 a night on our test stays, less than Capella Bangkok on every stay and close to Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River ($659 against $681 in November, $740 against $689 in March, $518 against $530 in July). Over New Year it cost $1,496. If price leads, the Peninsula Bangkok and Rosewood Bangkok cost far less on our stays; if the highest guest score leads, Four Seasons edges it.

Two rate quirks are worth knowing. On our November stay a refundable rate cost 32% more than the prepaid one; on the other three stays it cost 2% or nothing. And the week between Christmas and New Year carries the premium, not December as a whole: our 27–30 Dec stay cost $1,496 a night, while the third week of December cost $657 in our monthly checks.

The top four are separated by less than a tenth of a point: Four Seasons (9.65), Capella (9.60), the Ritz-Carlton (9.59, on only 29 reviews) and Mandarin Oriental (9.58). Where Mandarin Oriental stands out is consistency: 1% of its recent guests scored it under 7, the lowest of the seven, against 3% at Four Seasons and 5% at Capella. It is one of three Forbes Five-Star hotels on the list, with Capella and the Peninsula. On the 2026 lists, Capella Bangkok is No.2 in The 50 Best Hotels and was promoted to Three MICHELIN Keys, Four Seasons is No.3, Mandarin Oriental No.10 with Three Keys, and Rosewood Bangkok No.70 with Two.
On price, Mandarin Oriental sits in the upper group with Four Seasons and Capella. It was cheaper than Capella on all four of our stays and traded places with Four Seasons on three of them; over New Year it cost $1,496 against $896 at Four Seasons and $1,807 at Capella. The Peninsula Bangkok ($296–574) and Rosewood Bangkok ($286–767) cost far less on every stay, at a lower guest score (9.20 and 9.40). Our read: for a first Bangkok stay at the top of the market, Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons are the two to choose between, and your dates decide it. The Hotel Behind the Numbers
The hotel has been refreshed for its anniversary. The River Wing was restored in 2019, and the rooms in the Authors' Wing and Garden Wing were redesigned by Jeffrey Wilkes in a programme announced in April 2025 and due to finish towards the end of 2025, along with a redesigned fitness centre. The Authors' Lounge, on the ground floor of the original Oriental building, keeps its early-1900s style, with wicker furniture and photographs of the writers who stayed, and is known for afternoon tea.
There are 12 restaurants and bars. Le Normandie, open since 1958, is now run by Anne-Sophie Pic, who took over from Alain Roux in the third quarter of 2025 with Japanese head chef Tamaki Kobayashi; it holds Two MICHELIN stars in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026. Lord Jim's now works with chef Alex Dilling and The China House with Chef Fei, and Baan Phraya was redesigned under Chef Pom with a larger herb garden. Sala Rim Naam serves Thai food with classical dance every night, and The Bamboo Bar has live jazz. Guests notice: food came up in 19% of written reviews, averaging a perfect 10.
The Oriental Spa has 18 private treatment rooms, and the hotel adds two pools, two tennis courts and the Oriental Thai Cooking School. It sits next to Saphan Taksin BTS station.
