Every room, photo and amenity at Hôtel Plaza Athénée

Hôtel Plaza Athénée opened in 1913 on avenue Montaigne, and its red awnings and the ivy and red geraniums of its courtyard are its signature. On paper it is at the top of its game: a Forbes Five-Star rating, Three MICHELIN Keys in 2026 and No. 41 in The 50 Best Hotels 2026, new to the top 50 (it was No. 80 in 2025). It is one of two Paris hotels in Dorchester Collection, with Le Meurice.

Our numbers tell a less comfortable story. Its 100 most recent guests, from September 2025 to August 2026, scored it 8.83 out of 10, with 79% at 9 or more and 13% under 7. That is low for a Paris palace: of the eight hotels on our Paris board with enough reviews to score, only the Trianon Palace in Versailles scored lower. Over its whole history on our platform the hotel averages 9.4 across 352 reviews, so the past year has been weaker than its record. And it is not cheap: $1,468–2,693 a night on our four test stays, room only.

Our verdict: book it for the address and the views (the view is the topic its reviewers score highest), on a couple's trip in a value month such as November or February to April. On these reviews we would not choose it for a family trip, and for the same budget its sister Le Meurice scored 9.33 and cost less on three of our four stays.

The Plaza Athénée in Brief

  • 8.83 out of 10 across its 100 most recent reviews (September 2025 to August 2026): 79% of guests scored 9 or more and 13% under 7, seventh of the eight hotels on our Paris board with enough reviews to score.
  • The written reviews show where it slips: service came up in 54% of them (19 of the 35 written in English) and those averaged 7.05, well under the hotel's overall score.
  • $1,468 (November), $2,693 (New Year), $2,000 (March) and $2,036 (July) a night on our test stays, room only: the highest-priced Dorchester Collection hotel on our main stays.
  • Cheapest midweek month on our calendar: November ($1,469); February, April and August sat at $1,503. Dearest: June ($2,659), with September ($2,554) and January ($2,499) close behind.
  • Breakfast for two adds $79–90 a night for the same room; free cancellation added 18% on our November and July stays.
  • Forbes Five-Star, Three MICHELIN Keys, No. 41 in The 50 Best Hotels 2026, and 15 rooms that look onto the Eiffel Tower.

The Plaza Athénée by Our Numbers

On 1 October 2026 we priced the Plaza Athénée through our own booking engine (the one behind hotels.biirdee.com) on the same four stays we check at every hotel, 10–13 Nov 2026, 27–30 Dec 2026, 12–15 Mar 2027 and 15–18 Jul 2027, two adults, lowest rate per night, plus a two-night midweek stay (Tuesday to Thursday of the third week) in every month of the coming year. Taxes the hotel collects at checkout are extra. We also scored its 100 most recent verified guest reviews ourselves: the mean out of 10, the share scoring 9 or more and the share under 7.

What the Reviews Say

An 8.83 would be a good score for most hotels and is a low one for a Paris palace: 13% of the Plaza Athénée's recent guests scored a stay under 7, against 8% at Le Meurice and 4% at the Crillon. Two cautions in its favor. Its 100 reviews all date from the past year, while the Peninsula Paris, the Crillon, the George V and both Mandarin Orientals are scored on older windows (†). And over its whole history on our platform, 352 reviews, it averages 9.4. The recent dip is real, but it is recent.

The written English reviews show where it slips. Service comes up in more than half of them (54%), and those reviews averaged 7.05, well under the hotel's 8.83; at Le Meurice the same topic averaged 9.28. Food (17%, 7.0) also sits below the line. The best-scoring topic is the view (17%, 8.67), which fits a hotel where 15 rooms look onto the Eiffel Tower. The spa, upgrades, noise and children each came up in four reviews or fewer, too few to read anything into, though none of those few scored well.

Who wrote them matters too. Couples are the majority (52%) and families nearly a quarter (23%). For a couple, the Eiffel-view rooms are the reason to book here.

November is the month to aim for ($1,469 midweek), and February, April and August each sat at $1,503, with March at $1,520. June is the dearest ($2,659), September ($2,554) and January ($2,499) are close behind, and May ($2,128) also runs high. New Year is its own case: our 27–30 December stay cost $2,693 a night, against $1,678 for a midweek night in the third week of December. Our engine had no rooms for October 2027.

The Plaza Athénée or Another Palace?

On price, the Plaza Athénée sits in the middle of the Paris palaces, not at the top. In November it was cheaper than every Paris hotel we priced except Le Meurice and Mandarin Oriental Lutetia (and the Trianon Palace out in Versailles); the George V cost $2,459–3,809 on our four stays, the Crillon $2,094–2,571 and Cheval Blanc Paris $2,231–4,038. Only at New Year did it climb toward the top, at $2,693. On reviews it trails almost all of them, so the question is what you are paying for: the avenue Montaigne address, the Eiffel views and Three MICHELIN Keys, which Le Meurice, the George V, Cheval Blanc Paris and the Ritz Paris also hold.

Our pick depends on the trip. For the best-reviewed palace stay in Paris, the Peninsula Paris (9.60) and the Crillon (9.54) lead our board, though both on older review windows. For a sister hotel with stronger recent reviews at a lower price, Le Meurice (9.33, 8% under 7) was cheaper than the Plaza Athénée on three of our four stays and in every month of our calendar. For a no-limits stay, the George V and Cheval Blanc Paris are the dearest on our board; we set Cheval Blanc against the other palaces in Cheval Blanc Paris vs the Paris palaces.

Rooms, Dining and the Spa

The Plaza Athénée has 208 keys, 154 rooms and 54 suites, and 15 of the rooms look onto the Eiffel Tower; Suite 878 has a 180-degree view. On our engine the entry room was a Superior Room on all four stays and the first suite a Junior Suite, at $2,179–4,025 a night. The top categories included the Eiffel Suite ($9,482 in November), the Prestige Suite with an avenue Montaigne view and balcony ($9,788 at New Year), the Terrace Duplex Suite and L'Appartement.

The main restaurant changed hands in 2026. Jean Imbert, who took it over in 2022 and won a MICHELIN star soon after, stepped back from operations in April 2026, and the room was renamed La Grande Table du Plaza Athénée under executive chef Jocelyn Herland, with its kitchen and dining-room teams unchanged; it holds one MICHELIN star. Le Relais Plaza is the 1930s Art Deco brasserie, La Galerie serves afternoon tea, and there are Le Bar and La Terrasse Montaigne; the pastry is by Angelo Musa and Élisabeth Hot. In summer La Cour Jardin serves lunch and dinner in the courtyard (the 2026 season ran to 13 September), and in winter the courtyard has hosted an ice rink.

The spa is a Dior Institut, where treatments use Dior products and end with a make-up and perfume application. It came up in only four of the written reviews we scored, too few to judge it on our numbers.

What Our Desk Sees

Our desk booked the Plaza Athénée in June, a short stay like all our recent Dorchester Collection bookings (one to two nights). June is the hotel's dearest month on our calendar ($2,659 midweek), so if your dates can move, November or February to April cost far less. For every Dorchester Collection hotel month by month, see our Dorchester Collection prices.

Hôtel Plaza Athénée FAQs

How much does the Plaza Athénée cost per night?

On our 1 October 2026 check, the lowest rate was $1,468 a night for 10–13 November 2026, $2,693 for 27–30 December, $2,000 for 12–15 March 2027 and $2,036 for 15–18 July 2027, room only, for a Superior Room. A midweek night on our 12-month calendar ran from $1,469 (November) to $2,659 (June). Our engine also showed about $36–302 a night collected at the hotel, depending on the stay.

When is the Plaza Athénée cheapest?

November ($1,469 midweek on our calendar), then February, April and August ($1,503) and March ($1,520). June ($2,659), September ($2,554) and January ($2,499) are the dearest months, and New Year cost $2,693 a night on our December stay.

Is breakfast included at the Plaza Athénée?

Not in the cheapest rate, which was room only on all four of our stays. Breakfast for two added $79–90 a night for the same room on the same terms. A Dorchester Diamond Club booking through Biirdee adds daily breakfast where the rate does not already include it.

Why are the Plaza Athénée's guest scores lower than other Paris palaces?

Its 100 most recent reviews (September 2025 to August 2026) averaged 8.83, and the written reviews that mention service (more than half of them) averaged 7.05. Its whole history on our platform is much better (9.4 over 352 reviews), and several rivals are scored on older reviews, so part of the gap is timing: its recent year has been weaker than its record.

Plaza Athénée or Le Meurice?

On our numbers, Le Meurice: 9.33 against 8.83 on recent reviews, 8% of guests under 7 against 13%, and cheaper on three of our four stays and in every month of our calendar. Both hold Three MICHELIN Keys and Forbes Five-Star. Choose the Plaza Athénée for avenue Montaigne and an Eiffel-view room.

Plaza Athénée or the George V?

The George V scored higher (9.43 across 88 reviews, an older window) and cost far more: $2,459–3,809 a night on our four stays, against $1,468–2,693. Our clients' George V stays, all in July and August, came to a median of about $4,700 a night, taxes in. If the budget stretches and you want the surer service, the George V; if not, the Plaza Athénée in a value month, or Le Meurice.
