Private Jet for Ski Trips: Aspen, Vail and the Alps
What a charter to Aspen, Vail or the Alps costs, which mountain airports limit which aircraft, and how to get the skis and the whole party there, from the desk that books it.

The Short Answer
A private jet for a ski trip costs about $18,000 to $51,000 one way for the whole aircraft on the routes below, by our Jet Fare Index estimate: from $18,000 to $31,000 for London to Geneva on a midsize jet, up to $30,000 to $51,000 for New York to Aspen. The index is a year-round estimate; quotes for the busiest weeks land at the top of its ranges or above.
Mountain airports are the hard part. Aspen sits at nearly 7,800 feet in a narrow valley, and the altitude, terrain and runway limit which aircraft can land there and how much they carry. Winter weather can close it at short notice. The busiest weeks, Christmas to New Year and Presidents' Day weekend in the US, and February half term in Europe, fill the fleet and the parking ramps early.
Key Takeaways
- About $18,000 to $51,000 one way for the whole aircraft on the routes below, before any peak-week premium.
- Book the Christmas, New Year and Presidents' Day weeks early: aircraft and ramp space at the mountain airports run out first.
- Aspen (ASE) limits aircraft by altitude and runway, and Eagle County (EGE), near Vail, is the usual fallback when it closes.
- In the Alps, most flights land in Geneva (GVA), Sion (SIR) or Chambéry (CMF) and drive or take a helicopter; the resort altiports take only small aircraft.
- Tell the desk how many ski and boot bags are coming. Hold space, not seats, often decides the aircraft.
Estimated Prices on the Busiest Routes
Estimated one-way prices for the whole aircraft, from our Jet Fare Index, calibrated against charters booked through our desk. They are year-round figures, not quotes; the aircraft guide shows what each size seats.

| Los Angeles to Aspen | 730 mi | Midsize jet (e.g. Cessna Citation XLS+) | 2 hours | $20,000 to $35,000 | $23,000 to $39,000 (super-midsize jet) |

| New York to Aspen | 1,728 mi | Midsize jet (e.g. Cessna Citation XLS+) | 4.5 hours | $30,000 to $51,000 | $33,000 to $56,000 (super-midsize jet) |
| London to Geneva | 468 mi | Midsize jet (e.g. Cessna Citation XLS+) | 1.5 hours | $18,000 to $31,000 | $20,000 to $34,000 (super-midsize jet) |
The Mountain Airports
In Colorado, Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE) is minutes from town but demanding: operators set their own rules for crews flying in, and not every aircraft can use it. Eagle County Regional (EGE) serves Vail and Beaver Creek, takes larger aircraft, and is about 70 miles from Aspen by road, so it is where flights go when Aspen closes. Montrose (MTJ) is the usual airport for Telluride.
Further north, Jackson Hole (JAC) sits inside Grand Teton National Park, a short drive from Teton Village, with noise rules that shape when and how aircraft fly in. Sun Valley is served by Friedman Memorial (SUN) in Hailey, where weather can send flights to Twin Falls.
In the Alps, Geneva (GVA) is the gateway to Chamonix, Verbier and Megève, and Sion (SIR) is closer to Verbier and Crans-Montana. Chambéry (CMF) serves Courchevel, Méribel and Val d'Isère, and Samedan (SMV) sits in the Engadin for St. Moritz, one of the highest airports in Europe, with rules of its own. The altiports at the resorts, such as Courchevel, take only small aircraft flown by specially qualified pilots.
Skis, Snow and Delays
Ski bags, boot bags and winter coats take more room than summer luggage. A jet with enough seats can still be short of hold space, so give the desk a count of bags as well as passengers, and it quotes aircraft that carry both.
Cold mornings mean de-icing before departure, which takes time and is often billed as an extra. Snow at either end can hold a flight on the ground. Leave slack in the plan on the travel day, and keep the drive from the fallback airport in mind.
When to Book
For the Christmas and New Year weeks, ask for quotes in the autumn. Presidents' Day weekend and the European February half term are next. Outside those weeks, a few days to a couple of weeks ahead usually finds an aircraft.
In the Alps, Saturday is changeover day, when chalets turn over and Geneva's ramp fills. Flying on a Friday or Sunday can be easier to arrange and cost less.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a private jet for a ski trip cost?
About $18,000 to $51,000 one way for the whole aircraft on the busiest routes, by our Jet Fare Index estimate, from London to Geneva ($18,000 to $31,000) to New York to Aspen ($30,000 to $51,000). Peak weeks quote at the top of those ranges or above. The price is for the aircraft, so it is shared by everyone on board.
Can any private jet fly into Aspen?
No. Aspen's altitude, terrain and runway limit which aircraft can use it and how much they can carry, and operators set their own rules for crews flying in. The desk checks each aircraft against Aspen before quoting, and may offer a larger one, or Eagle County (EGE) near Vail.
Which airport is best for Vail?
Eagle County Regional (EGE), about 35 miles west of Vail and closer still to Beaver Creek. It takes larger aircraft than Aspen and is the usual fallback when Aspen closes.
Which airport do private jets use for Courchevel and the Three Valleys?
Most land in Chambéry (CMF) or Geneva (GVA) and drive or take a helicopter up. The Courchevel altiport itself takes only small aircraft flown by specially qualified pilots.
How can I pay less for a private jet for a ski trip?
Look for an empty leg, an aircraft repositioning on your route that sells for well under a full charter (our empty-leg database lists the companies that publish them, and empty-leg sellers in the United States lists the sellers whose legs fly there), fly a day either side of the peak, and compare a round trip with the aircraft waiting against two one-way flights. Our guide to what a private jet costs lists the fees a full quote should include.
