Private Jet to Major Events: Super Bowl, F1 and Art Basel

The Short Answer

A private jet for a big event costs about $16,000 to $41,000 one way for the whole aircraft on the routes below, by our Jet Fare Index estimate: from $16,000 to $27,000 for Los Angeles to Las Vegas on a midsize jet, up to $24,000 to $41,000 for New York to Miami. The index is a year-round estimate; quotes for the busiest weeks land at the top of its ranges or above.

At a big event, the flight is rarely the problem: the airport is. Hundreds of private aircraft arrive in the same few days, so airports fill, parking runs out, and in the US the FAA can require a reservation to land. Plan the arrival, the parking and the flight home together, and book early.

Key Takeaways

  • About $16,000 to $41,000 one way for the whole aircraft on the routes below, before any peak-week premium.
  • For the biggest US events, the FAA can run a reservation program at the nearby airports: no reservation, no landing. The operator books it.
  • Parking fills first. When it does, the aircraft drops you off and parks elsewhere, and the extra flights add to the price.
  • Everyone wants to leave the morning after. Leaving that night, or a day later, is easier to arrange.
  • Big events include the Super Bowl, the Masters, the Kentucky Derby, Art Basel Miami Beach, the Las Vegas and Miami Grands Prix, Cannes and the Monaco Grand Prix.

Landing Reservations and Parking

For events that draw a crush of aircraft, such as the Super Bowl and the Masters, the FAA can set up a special traffic management program: for a few days, private flights into the nearby airports need a reservation for their arrival and departure times. Operators request them, and the busiest times go first.

Ramp space is the other limit. Once the parking at an airport is spoken for, a new arrival can only drop off and leave. The aircraft then parks at another airport, sometimes hours away, and flies back to collect you, and both legs are added to the quote. Booking early is the best way to keep the aircraft near you.

Timing the Trip

Arrive the day before if you can: the day of the event is when reservations and ramps are tightest. Going home, everyone wants to leave the next morning, so the departure queue and the waits for a slot run long. Flying out the same night or a day later is easier.

The host city of some events changes every year, the Super Bowl above all, so the nearby airports and how busy they get change with it. Tell the desk the event as well as the city, and it plans for what that event brings.

The Recurring Events

In the US: the Super Bowl in February, the Masters in Augusta in April, the Kentucky Derby in May, the Miami Grand Prix in spring, the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November and Art Basel Miami Beach in December. In Europe: the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix in May, both into Nice, and the Alpine and Mediterranean seasons around them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private jet for a big event cost?

About $16,000 to $41,000 one way for the whole aircraft on the busiest routes, by our Jet Fare Index estimate, from Los Angeles to Las Vegas ($16,000 to $27,000) to New York to Miami ($24,000 to $41,000). Peak weeks quote at the top of those ranges or above. The price is for the aircraft, so it is shared by everyone on board.

Do I need a reservation to fly a private jet to the Super Bowl?

Usually, yes. For the Super Bowl and a few other big events, the FAA runs a reservation program for the airports around the host city, and private flights need a reserved time to land and depart. The operator requests it when you book.

Why does a private jet to a big event cost more?

Demand for aircraft on the same few days, and the extra flights when the airport is full: the aircraft drops you off, flies to park somewhere else, and comes back for you, and the quote includes those legs. Booking early keeps both down.

Which airport is best for the Monaco Grand Prix?

Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE), then a short helicopter flight or a drive into Monaco. Grand Prix week is one of the busiest of the year at Nice, so book the aircraft and its parking early.

How can I pay less for a private jet for a big event?

Look for an empty leg, an aircraft repositioning on your route that sells for well under a full charter (our empty-leg database lists the companies that publish them, and empty-leg sellers in the United States lists the sellers whose legs fly there), fly a day either side of the peak, and compare a round trip with the aircraft waiting against two one-way flights. Our guide to what a private jet costs lists the fees a full quote should include.
