Business class flights to Johannesburg, South Africa land at OR Tambo International (JNB), about 25 km east of the city and roughly fifteen minutes from Sandton on the Gautrain, which is the rare airport rail link that premium travellers actually use. The city sits at 1,750 m on the Highveld, so the air is thin, the winter nights are genuinely cold and the flights in are long. Two US carriers fly in nonstop: Delta from Atlanta in about 17h, one of the longest sectors any US carrier operates, and United from Newark in about 16h10m; from every other American city the trip is a one-stop, and the connections are good enough that this is no hardship.
From London the flight is nonstop, with the main rotations departing in the evening in each direction: British Airways and Virgin Atlantic each fly Heathrow to JNB in about 11h35m, and because Johannesburg is only one or two hours ahead of the UK depending on the season, there is no time change to absorb at the far end, just a short night, which is exactly the case for a lie-flat seat. The aircraft varies across the widebody fleet, and so does the seat (Club Suite with a closing door on the newer cabins, the older Club World layout on anything not yet retrofitted), so the seat map is worth checking on your specific date before you commit.
The other Heathrow nonstop, also about 11h35m overnight, with Upper Class on whichever widebody is assigned; the A350 cabin is the best of them and carries the social space at the front. A thin schedule and a small business cabin, so when discounted inventory opens on this route it does not sit around for long.
Atlanta to JNB nonstop, about 17h gate to gate, in Delta One suites on the A350. Atlanta puts nearly every US city one connection away on a single ticket, which makes it work from Boston or Denver as readily as from the South, but premium seats go early in safari season. United flies the other US nonstop, Newark to JNB in about 16h10m in Polaris, which is the better fit from the Northeast.
Doha to Johannesburg in about 8h05m, with Qsuite when a 777 or A350-1000 is assigned and the older 1-2-1 seat when it is not, worth checking the aircraft for your date. Consistently the strongest single-connection routing from London, the US East Coast and South Asia. Doha connections are frequently sold in the 60-to-90-minute band; buy the longer one and use the lounge rather than sprinting the terminal.
Dubai to Johannesburg in about 8h20m on a schedule thick enough to connect from almost anywhere, and the widest one-stop net into JNB from Europe, Asia and North America. Aim for the A380 rotations: some 777s on this route still fly a 2-3-2 business layout in which the centre seat of the middle three has no direct aisle access.
Istanbul to Johannesburg in about 9h40m, with catering that reliably punches above the fare. The seat depends entirely on the aircraft (a 1-2-1 suite on the newest 787s and A350s, but 2-3-2 on the 777s and 2-2-2 on the A330s that often work this route), so check the configuration for your date before you book. Usually the cheapest lie-flat way in from continental Europe, the Balkans and Central Asia; the trade-off is a connection at Istanbul that can land in the small hours.

Johannesburg runs on a flipped calendar and the weather is better than its reputation. The dry winter, May through September, brings cloudless days around 17–20°C, nights that drop close to freezing on the Highveld, and the best game viewing of the year in Kruger, the Waterberg and Madikwe, when thin bush and shrinking waterholes concentrate the animals. That is the peak for premium cabins: safari itineraries are locked in months ahead and the flights follow them. The wet summer, October through April, is hot, green and broken by short, spectacular late-afternoon thunderstorms, with the jacarandas out across Joburg and Pretoria from mid-October into November.
Two hard peaks sit on top of the safari season. The South African school holidays from mid-December to mid-January put local families on the same aircraft as inbound visitors and drag Cape Town traffic through JNB with them, and Easter does a compressed version of the same thing. Johannesburg is also the financial capital of the continent, so Sandton generates a Monday-to-Thursday corporate flow all year, which keeps midweek business fares firmer than weekend ones: the reverse of most leisure destinations. The genuinely soft windows we see are February to early April, warm and wet and quiet, and the first three weeks of November before the holiday rush starts.
Book four to six months ahead for June through September and for the December holidays, eight to twelve weeks for everything else. The binding constraint is inventory rather than the headline fare: the US and UK nonstops run a departure or two a day each from Atlanta, Newark and Heathrow, and most of the widebodies on them carry only a few dozen flat beds, so the discounted fare buckets close long before the published price moves.
